You really don't need aim that well at short range either. At short rang it more just point and click.

I know whose house I am breaking into.

That's why I have a dog. If someone so much as steps in our yard she goes nuts.

There's been a big increase in home invasions in Houston recently as well, and not just inside the city limits. One guy has been terrorizing the Heights area, and shot at a guy with his baby inside the house, and chased him down the block and open fired on drivers as well. A guy in an apartment had his door kicked in at 3AM, and he came out of his bedroom with a shotgun and took out both robbers. Even way out in the far west burbs there have been home invasions happening.

I've been in half a panic about this mostly because I've had a ridiculous fear of home invasion since I was about 10. Lately I've been having nightmares about people breaking into my apartment while I am asleep. Soon I am buying a house, possibly very close to the Heights area where the home invasions are seeing a big jump, and I'll be living completely alone for the first time in my life. I decided I'm going to buy a good dog and have him trained, and a nice new 20 gauge pistol grip shotgun with a tactical stock. Hopefully a dog will be enough to scare away any assholes.

While I admire esoteric martial arts such as French Cane Fighting, in a home invasion, I'm relying on a loaded 357 magnum that I keep by my bed. I am not a gun nut by any means, but no one's taking my stuff or putting my life in danger while I sit idly by. I keep it loaded because I have no children in the house, and because who has time to load a gun when The Russians are parachuting onto your lawn......WOLVERINE!

sorry. got a bit carried away.

Buddy of mine was out of town when home invaders hit his house in Sandy Springs (Atlanta suburb). His girlfriend heard it, ran for his gun and found his shotgun. She was upstairs and could hear them breaking in downstairs. After calling 911* she screamed for the invaders to leave. They didn't...until she cocked the shotgun. Just that sound was enough to scare them away.

*The cops showed up 25 minutes later. Nice response time. They must have been trained in Detroit.

So are most of these home invaders attacking homes without alarm systems or they're savvy enough to turn them off?

Typically home invasions happen when people are at home, meaning an alarm isn't set most of the time.

And what JudgeSmails said about the shotgun, double it. The sound of a shotgun racking is probably the best deterrent anyone can have.

Most seem to be without, but the ones in/around my neighborhood have been well-orchestrated. Several guys who go through houses very fast. Reports peg their efforts at clocking in well under five minutes, real smash and grab. Unless they're scared off by the alarm, the response time might not be fast enough to do any good.

And as stated earlier, a good size dog can be better than any alarm. We've got two, and their barking is an excellent alarm and deterrent.

(My ex was awakened last week by a guy trying to break into her house; her roommate's large dog seems to be the primary reason his efforts were thwarted.)

I figure a very loud alarm should scare most of them away ... I'm not even talking about an ADT like system, which is almost a ripoff really.

You're only going to scare off kids and non-psychos. Pros are in and out, and know that the cops won't be called out until after the alarm company has tried to make contact with the homeowner, failed, tried the secondary contact, failed, and finally called the local PD. In that time your house already emptied. I've been through 3 burglaries, and twice alarms were set. We got home, and they were still going off.

But that's also burglaries. You've got to really understand the difference between a home invasion and burglary. A burglar wants in and out quietly, no fuss. Someone pulling a home invasion doesn't give a shit who's home, and they're going to probably get a kick on confronting (or worse) whoever is home.

Owning a Rottweiller and watching LETHAL WEAPON 3 taught me how to get around that obstacle (food!) when no one's around. Although, I do feel safer when I know my pooch barks at suspicious noises.

IT TAKES A THIEF (TV Series) has been a real eye-opener in the few eps I've caught. It's amazing how easy a motivated person can get in, steal your stuff, and get out.

There actually is something like this avaliable. There was a picture of a shotgun with a small megaphone attached to the silde of the gun the idea being to magnify the sound of the cocking shotgun but for the life of me can't find it anymore, it's been a couple of years since I saw it.

I've lived in cities my whole life, often in really shitty neighborhoods, and I've never known anyone around me who had a gun (that wasn't a criminal, anyway).

Stop hanging out with pussies.

My parents still leave their front door unlocked and would never dream of owning a gun. Ex hippies. Granted, they live in Williamson County, Texas, which is kind of like living on a military base: republicans and guns everywhere. This may be a bit of a deterrent.

When my father-in-law died a couple of years ago, we inherited a Luger reproduction and a shotgun. I've been wanting to get rid of them. This thread is making me reconsider.

I am not a fan of regular folks having guns anymore, but since I inherited my dad's collection and like what's mine, I have several ways of getting my hands on killing stuff in case something like this happens here.

I hope no one ever tries to get in here, but if they do I will enjoy killing them.

Yay for good guys who win!
That report restores my faith in Humanity! That for warming my heart Nick!

I don't blame Nick for being cautious, what with all those filthy renters moving into his neighborhood.
