Detroit slips by because the indicators they use require a modicum of functioning society to measure. "Violent crime" is really only reported violent crimes, corruption doesn't register unless it's prosecuted and convicted, long commutes don't apply if no one has jobs/is willing to risk their lives by entering the city center. The compound in The Road Warrior would probably fare pretty well in this system (they even have a pretty decent boomerang squad).

That's actually quite sad Schwartz. We can't rank you for being a shithole because nobody is left to care.

I'm actually shocked there's not anthropologists crawling around Detroit documenting all this. We're seeing a slow but steady collapse of civilization in a major urban center in the Western first world. New York in the 70's was bad and D.C. in the 80's but this is unprecedented in terms of scale and scope.

Maybe Detroit is what the future will look like.

What bothers me the most is the apathy. People seemed to have resigned themselves to Detroit sinking into the 7th level of Hell. It's a total breakdown of not only the physical infrastructure and economics of a city but the social fabric that holds a community together. It'd be damn interesting from a scientific perspective if it just weren't so damn sad and pathetic.

I think everybody who was competent and cared left a long time ago.

Atlanta came in third, followed by Greensboro, N.C., and Dayton, Ohio.
These are also going to be on the list next year.

If gas price go back to over 5 $ a gallon you know LA will make Detroit look like Australian Northern Coast, after a couple of years.

Chicago? Chicago is on this list? At number 3? Are you fucking shitting me? That's retarded.
Chicago's one of the best-run metropolises (metropoli?) I've ever seen. Granted I didn't hang in the projects, but yeah, not that miserable. (Maybe in winter?)

I think the staticians had some money on the Cubs making it out of the divisional series and are still kind of mad they got their asses handed to them so damn easily after months in first place. Just a theory, though, I can't see how it beats Detroit is all.
It shouldn't be anywhere near the list. I mean, I'm bias, but it's still one of the best big cities in the world let alone the country.
Alas, I've never had the opportunity to go to Chicago. But hope to one day. Being of Polish extraction myself, I take heart from what a friend told me about Chicago. He said it is to Polish people what Boston is to the Irish. How can such a place be miserable?

Let the Polack jokes begin!

We apparently have the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw. Go figure.

Chicago's main problem is the rest of Illinois drags it down.

"Illinois, we've got Chicago and, uh...Cheap Trick!"

The Irish - Guinness, St Patty's Day, The Dropkick Murphys.

The Polish - Duckblood soup, Pope John Paul II.

Advantage: The Irish.

Also, Jameson. Checkmate, Polacks.

But. . .but we invented vodka!

The Russkies perfected it, though. Tough break, polska.

Wasnt season 2 of the Wire , kinda Polack -centric. Add that to that, what has been said about Chicago. Here in CT we had/have New Britain aka "New Britski".

I lived in New Britain for a few years ( might be a law-every Polish family must have one member live there for a while). Raised in Hartford -NB can be a scary place! Dare I mention Bridgeport (our Detroit)?

No love for Kelbasa or pierogi!?

I would think the biggest night of rookie drunks and mediocre punk rock with bagpipes would be detriments.

As someone who has been to both Poland and Ireland I can tell you first hand that Poland has better food and hotter women.

MUCH love for kielbasa & Pierogi. Don't forget the stuffed cabbage.

And proud of my heritage as I am, I'm still surprised we have hotter women than Ireland (the food I can believe; the Irish are famous for just boiling the shit out of everything).

And as for the Russkies perfecting vodka: try Wyborowa and Luksossawa. They may change your mind.

That's more of a general UK thing really.
The women thing isn't exclusive to Poland either. I have been all over the former Eastern Bloc and their women folk are outstanding. The one thing that Ireland does have over Poland is filthier rivers.
For some other reason, this hotness factor also applies to the Balkans.
Well the Balkans were once part of the Eastern Bloc.

Seriously though I am taking the piss on Ireland. It is a beautiful place (waterway issues excepted) with delightful people. It has greatly benefited from its membership in the EU and is undergoing massive improvements. It is also a burgeoning culinary mecca and produces some of the best tasting lamb and beef I have ever tasted. All that despite being some sort of white-boy promised land for every honky who is clueless as to his lineage.

Detroit is making a comeback! The Motor City is now one of the most affordable cities in the country to live in!

If you can ignore the crazy, heavily-armed bank robbers and cop assassinations, it could be the place for you!
