Ha, didn“t see it. Only the on-going discussion in the PL thread.

But I surely will.

Just wanted to mention Landon Donovan's impressive first appearance for Everton in the EPL, from the right flank to boot. Personally, I think putting him up top alongside Altidore would be a mistake for the USMNT as his creativity and vision is something you can't get from anyone else on the team right now. And if Jozy doesn't have Landon to feed him the ball, he's going to become a non-factor in South Africa.

Read the back-ups played pretty shitty against Honduras. But then again it was the back-ups.

In "are you fucking serious" news, Charlie Davies is way ahead of schedule on his rehab and says he'll be definitely back for the World Cup. Deadspin used the term "mutant healing factor." I am inclined to agree.

I forgot the game was on and when I happened to flip past it we were getting our asses handed to us. When I saw the lineup we put out there though I felt a lot better. No Europe-based players. Amazing how much more that means now compared to a decade ago when we had maybe 2-3 guys getting any decent time in Europe (McBride, Reyna, someone or other). Hopefully that result will be a motivator for guys trying to nail down a roster spot.

Athletes certainly are mutants. I can't believe that Davies is eyeing the Cup rather than just focusing on getting back to serious conditioning, much less football activities by the Cup. That would have to be the biggest lift the US could get before the tourney starts.

I'm cautiously optimistic re: Davies, but I will say this - I'll take 85-90% of Davies for the cup over 100% of a lot of other forward options. And if he provides an emotional lift to the team by just being on the squad, so much the better. The US needs to play with some emotion this Cup.

Honestly, I think the game against England will be emotional enough. You have to think that all of the pre-Cup articles in the American media will mention 1950 and Beckham, not to mention it's likely to get a big promotional push from ABC and ESPN. (The game's on a Saturday, so it'll be on ABC for sure.)

I'm more worried about a comedown factor after the first match, no matter what the result is.

Oh great, yet another reason to hate John Harkes.

Didn't he go on a anti-Sampson campaign after getting dropped?
That headline is awesome. Yes, he did.

And for all the shit that Sampson justifiably took post-France, could you imagine the shitstorm this would have caused in the American media? I seem to remember no one caring all that much in the mainstream press, but this would have heaped all sorts of unwanted outside attention towards the team.

Good news quietly pouring in for the squad. Onyewu training again, Davies' recovery way ahead of schedule, and Howard and Donovan playing really well at Everton. Not to mention their toughest first round opponents mired in scandal. If Dempsey's recovery moves along quickly I'd say Bradley has a Leprechaun shoved up his ass or something.

Yeah, I watched the second half of today's Everton/ManU match this morning and it looked like Donovan was really playing well. I didn't realize they were 5-1-1 since he joined the squad with wins over Chelsea and now ManU. Might have to become an Everton fan.. I've yet to "adopt" a premier league squad for my own.

US-Netherlands friendly in Amsterdam on Wednesday at 2:30pm ET on ESPN2. The US will call up their top European-based talent, and the Dutch will also have their first team there. Will be a good look at a lineup that, barring injury, will be the one to travel to South Africa. I'm really looking for the US to be competitive in Europe against a top team, something they've had trouble with in the past. Wonder who Bradley will put up top with Altidore?
I would like this game to mean something, but I really don't know if you can take anything from it win or lose. Most of the US team is pretty set, other then bench positions. It would be nice to see how the fill ins for Davies and Onyewu play while they are rehab their injuries. I hope Altidore gets some solid time. The US still needs a goal scorer and Altidore has played well against European teams.

Apparently Clint Dempsey's injury isn't nearly as bad as was feared and he's likely to be back on the field before the end of the Premier League season. News can't get much better for the States lately. We may have a squad nearing 100% heading into the Cup.

And just read that Demarcus Beasley's BMW was set on fire outside of his home in Glasgow. This is the second time his vehicles have been vandalised/destroyed since '08. Ah, you crazy Scottish Football fans...

The US is down 1-0 to the Dutch at the half. They're being thoroughly outclassed. Unable to hold possession, few chances, and really are lucky to be down only one goal. That goal was conceded on a penalty kick after a boneheaded play by Bornstein.

Argentina is beating Germany 1-0 so far. I fully expect we lose.

England is down 1-0 near the end of the first half with Egypt.

LOL, England. The curse of John Terry is in full effect. Hopefully it carries over to the Cup.
God, we suck in Europe.
Oh, look at this. Beasley free kick leads to a nice header and a consolation goal for the US.
England's bench is getting the job done. 2-1 over Egypt now. Peter Crouch is going to give us nightmares, I just know it. In the '06 cup, Czech striker Jan Koller (6'7'') gave us fits.

ETA: Two for Crouch. The prospect of Rooney-Crouch up front - no matter how tactically dysfunctional that could be - is scary for the US.

Well, David Beckham is out of contention for the England World Cup team with a torn Achilles. Another blow for England as their run up to the Cup just gets worse and worse. I'm sure MLS isn't happy about his injury either, but as a strike is looking more and more likely it probably won't matter much. Although without the prospect of another World Cup on the horizon, it remains to be seen if Beckham retains the drive to play. He may call it a career. Clint Dempsey has made his return for Fulham, and Onyewu continues to train to get back to match fitness.

USA - Slovenia match will be in 3D, leaving USA-GRB on stupid old 2D.

Who knows how 3D would work, but you'd figure that the biggest soccer match in the history of the English speaking work (and let's be honest, who do you think is driving 3D consumerism) would have made the cut.

Yes, I'm nervous two months out and need an outlet.

Someone wants US-England to get all blow'd up.

Of course, reports are that there's still half a million unsold tickets for the World Cup. So maybe nobody would notice if a bomb went off.
