And they think this is going to make people back off? Hey guess, what, 10 guys or 11, we expect better nowadays. And if it was based on this one tournament fine. But they have been up and down during the WC qualifying this year as well. And I believe quite a few of the players have been ripped into as well as the coaches.
Only 10 minutes in and we've already had a few missed opportunities. You got to put at least one in the net this half guys.
1-0 USA. They have to win a game like this sometime.
1 - nil. Let's bring it home.

Anyone know if ESPN is showing this online? I suppose I could just look it up, but Big Brother watches.
I have no idea. Through the Soccer tab at ESPN.com they have live updates but I'm not sure about streaming.
ESPN is not offering, but FIFA is.

A red card?!? The refs have been trying to give this to Spain the entire match.
Oh my God. This is unreal.
Holy shit!

I'd just like to mention that I miss Eric Wynalda's commentary. Harkes got on my nerves, and I only watched the second half of the game.
Picked up the last few minutes. Glad we won but not too happy how we backed into the final game.
Unbelievable. Even the asinine red card given to Bradley won't taint this win. Howard came up huge and thank god for Altidore. He's 19 years old and already he's scored some of the biggest goals in US soccer history. USA! USA! USA!
This is the damn American team we should see more often. Hustle and solid defense. I think we get a little complacent with CONCACAF opposition and can't turn it up against major international competition. Spain looked to be playing a little out of sorts and we capitalized. The officiating situation has to be addressed. Too many ridiculous reds going against the US.

With a team like Spain firing on all cylinders in the last ten minutes to try and score I'd be happy to moonwalk into the final game.

We still have a tendency to only play north and south when fatigue sets in. There were possibly a dozen changes of possession that could have been saved from an extra touch or two instead of trying to one-time everything or launching it towards the other keeper.

Turns out it was the same ref from the 2006 US-Italy match. As one writer twitted, "Who's assigning these refs, David Stern?".
Shocking. Glad I was wrong. But now I want to see this at the World Cup. They don't have to win but I want them to make the Semi's.

When do they draw the groups for the WC?

I still am in shock. I wish I could have watched it live. I was keeping up with it online. This team is so up and down. But damn, great win for the team.
Casey, I watched the game and I still don't believe it.

Qualifying doesn't end until mid-November, and the draw is on December 4.

Very good match from what i saw, USA could have gotten 2 more from the counter attack. Why havent the rest of the world seen this team play that well before this tournament?

Bradley's continued insistence on playing "experienced" but horrible players like DaMarcus Beasley and Frankie Hejduk. There are some who still say he doesn't have his best 11 out on the field even now (Freddy Adu, for example, or Jose Francisco Torres) but this tournament forced his hand a bit.

Also, on an international stage, the US' schedule isn't great. Nobody pays attention to CONCACAF and the last time the US played a match against this level of competition was the downpour draw against Argentina back in the Meadowlands.

I'm watching the game (again) and Harkes, who sounds EXACTLY like Mary Carillo (seriously if she couldn't do Wimbledon coverage, they'd have an instant replacement), couldn't be a bigger douche.

You can hear his jealousy in everyone of his many criticisms and self-congratulations.

I just want it to be 2:00 already.

So ready for this one. Wish I could make it to Finn McCool's here in New Orleans to see the game, but I have to be dad today so no joy. I will be watching here though.
Got the chores and errands out of the way this morning, so ready for this afternoon. I just hope they show up. They don't have to win.. just show up.

With all the press the game over Spain brought, why is this match not on ABC? Oh well, bring it on.

No idea. My ABC affiliate has infomercials on right now. Surprised they're not doing some sort of Michael Jackson special...

Great start

yes yes yes oh yes
Great half again. I like the discipline.. and Howard's on his game yet again. I also laughed out loud on Donovan's finish, then the "yeah, that's me" moment afterwards. That may be Donovan's best finish as a member of the USNT.

Jesus. Breathing time is almost done. Great game so far. Ref is actually calling a pretty fair game. We are back in. LET'S GO BOYS!
Well, that's two goals given up in the first 15 minutes. US is back on its heels. I hate to bash on Altidore, but he's worthless right now. Get him out and get someone else in for him...

My god. Come on boys. Get it in their side and keep it there.
Aaaand that'll do it. A tale of two halves. I can't help thinking that the US just ran out of gas here in the second half... all sorts of flat and not a lot of hustle, outside of Davies and (obviously) Howard.

US Soccer = Up and down. No one defining way of play. Just up and down.
Either the US got tired or Brazil finally got interested.

And yes, the US had nothing to do with leading 2-0 in the first half, like it obviously has to be all Brazil's doing that they were down. Fuck that. This is the crap that pisses US soccer fans off. Yes, I understand that US isn't a world power in soccer, but don't automatically dismiss success by the US as "well, the other team really wasn't in it."
Brazil (the team) took this whole Cup very seriously so they were definitely in it. I enjoy watching the U.S. team play and have done that ever since they played in Korea. They don't have the individuals who can act as a game changer (two USNT player on two of the bottom teams in the Danish league will testify to that) but rely solely on a team effort and effective counter play.

I wish they'd won just like my country beat Brazil in the final in ´94 (EDIT: that was ´95 and the runner up was Argentina)
I wasn't dismissing how well the US played in the first half. The two goals were very nice. Brazil looked like a completely different team in the second half. I'm not sure how much you can put on fatigue but, maybe that was the issue. I'm not looking for a reason to dismiss there success. Trying to figure out how they went from looking so good to mediocre in a half of football. Trust me I want to see them do well also.
I think I brought on the shitty play as I missed the entire first half. I might be the jinx to the US team. They always play horrible only when I watch and "win" when I forget to tune in.
Wow. Talk about taking the wind out of the US sail, that Brazil goal in the first minute of the second half just turned the momentum immediately. I have to say, from my perspective it looked more like an increase in attacking urgency from Brazil resulting in our back line falling completely apart. Can't tell if it was communication, fatigue, or nerves that was the main culprit. And how bad were we on set piece defense? I can't believe Brazil dominated in the air like they did. If not for a spectacular Tim Howard, that game wouldn't have been close. At the very least we proved we can play with the big boys in the big tourneys.

Oh, and props to the refs for calling a fair match (when I was certain we'd see a US red in the second half to help Brazil get back in it).

So the US "B" team beat up on Grenada, 4-0, in the first round of the Gold Cup. Haiti and Honduras looked out of control in their match, so at least the "B" team should get the US into the knockout round. Holden's goal was pretty good.. it's nice to see another team let someone make a run untouched into the box. And Adu, of course, was fantastic, albeit against limited competition. How is he not getting time with the big squad?
It's Grenada... I don't think the finals should be unexpected or considered a stretch. This team is probably the 2nd or 3rd best in CONCACAF talent-wise top to bottom, they just don't have the experience.

I like seeing players like Rogers, Holden, and of course Adu getting a full game under their belts. This cup is going to be great for the US team.
The US is all but in the Gold Cup knockout round after last night's 2-0 win over Honduras. The big news from last night - Ching finally finished, and Adu is gone, back to Benfica after last night's match. I'm not sure he did enough to impress Bradley.. he was fine against Grenada, but aside from one nifty backheel, he was invisible last night, except when he was on the ground. Davies continues to impress, the guy's got a high motor that just won't quit, and Rogers is still playing very well. I'm also mildly impressed with Beckerman. Still needs a haircut though.
The B- team (I hesitate to call them the C team) needed a Holden goal in the 92nd minute to earn a 2-2 draw with Haiti, who essentially played well for three minutes, got two goals and got the draw. Cooper started well but faded late, and Holden was clearly the man of the match, assisting on the first goal by Arnaud with a great through ball, then cracking the tying shot in extra time. Knockout round is next at the Gold Cup.
The US brought their C team to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup, and still pulled out a 2-1 win in overtime over Panama. Shoddy defense on a corner put Panama up, 1-0, right before halftime, but Pert Plus spokesperson Kyle Beckerman equalized just minutes after halftime. Kenny Cooper took a cleat to the crotch in the box and converted the resulting PK just before the end of the first overtime.

The US may not win this, but Bradley has to be happy with the grit of a lot of the youngsters playing. Holden again impressed, and Rogers and Beckerman continue to play well.
Today is a grudge match as these two teams put everything on the table. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, I bring you USA vs. Panama.
My family back in Panama was pissed I was rooting for the US team! :-)

Not a bad match, for a moment it looked like it was going to be decided on penalties.
