Cold War Kids

I'm not too incredibly versed in their stuff yet (which is a bit inexcusable as they only have two albums thus far) but what I've heard I absolutely fucking LOVE. Nathan Willett's vocal work is phenomenal - I love that naturally bluesy vibe he has. That and Matt Aveiro's percussion make the band stand out to me, personally. "Hang Me Up To Dry," "We Used to Vacation," "Passing the Hat," "Saint John" and "Every Man I Fall For" are all I've managed to hear so far, but I love them all. ESPECIALLY "Saint John." Anybody else dig them?

The song of theirs I've been hearing on the radio makes me think it's John Cameron Mitchell from Hedwig every time I hear it. I've been meaning to look into their stuff.

Aside from withstanding an occasional tune, I can't take this band. The vocalist has a precarious lack of range. The music doesn't sound very interesting to me, like an indie take on blues, the deadest musical genre. Creating a near-monotonal effect, from what I remember. I revisit these guys every few months to wonder what it is I don't hear from them that their fans do. But I can't notice it yet.

I was a pretty big fan of their first album, especially the arrangements on the more piano-centric tunes like "Hospital Beds" and "We Used to Vacation" (I think those were the ones). Haven't checked out the second disc yet, but I remember the reviews weren't all that great. That hasn't deterred me, though...I'm going to pick it up eventually, and hope for the best.

Actually, Pandora has played a LOT of their stuff today and once I was able to discern which songs were on which album, it's fairly evident that the second is definitely a step or two down in quality and they tend to lose a lot of the charm of the first album.
