Grand Theft Auto IV:The Lost and Damned

Thread Starter
Sons of Anarchy the Video Game. Out on Tuesday for $20 or 1600 Microsoft points, it's the DLC add on to Grand Theft Auto IV.

Figured since it's new characters and story, might as well start a new thread for all the fun spoilers and people bitching about how much GTA IV sucks and how much better Saint's Row 2 is. It isn't, you goddamn liars. I haven't seen any reviews yet, but I kinda feel I don't have to, because I loved the shit out of GTA IV and playing as a Jewish biker in a "sequel" in the same super awesome city sounds fantastic.

Russ, Alex - you guys got a code to play this bitch yet? Or is this going to be a case of Monday midnight, the reviews start showing up?

Also, Dr. Syn posted IGN's description of the new multiplayer stuff in the normal GTA IV thread. http://au.xboxlive.ign.com/articles/953/953076p1.html
Sounds pretty damn fun. I actually really enjoyed playing IV's multi with a bunch of Chewers and hope the trend continues with this.

Oh, and sorry, you poor PS3 bastards. Just 360 for this bitch (for right now, anyway). So, can we shut up about it now?

It is highly unlikely that Rockstar will ever give me a single goddamned thing before release.
They had me at "Max Cavalera gets his own radio show".
I should be getting a review code, but doubt before release. I made friends with the Rockstar people too late to charm my way into their big NYC event for the game, unfortunately.

But a 20 hour expansion with a new story, new music (SEPULTURA), and new multiplayer modes means that everyone should be buying this sucker.
It's definitely 20 hours? Wow, that's pretty nice.

Any idea how we actually access the DLC? Do we call from Niko's phone like multi?

The hero is Jewish? Is he any relation to the Hasidic Jew on the Harley who you would sometimes see in GTA IV, and who was completely hilarious?

Not sure, Billy. I do know that you can access the Lost and the Damned multiplayer through the phone, but only while you are playing the expansion.

I am not trying to be needlessly controversial or disagreeable on this, honestly, despite my reputation on these boards...but I didn't think GTAIV was nearly what it was hyped up to be. The graphics were so terrible and dark, with shadows protruding at the bottom of buildings swallowing up the scenery that I found the game nearly unplayable - and the gameplay is basically a barebones interpretation of San Andreas. I mean, the graphics are so fucking terrible one can't play it without being agitated. You walk under a building and everything is just black on an otherwise bright day in game-time. And the cars drove horribly, the shooting mechanism was still as flawed as in the other games...sure, the atmosphere and universe was quite immersive, but to search for these elements is excruciating...

You have to start a new game from the main menu. It's completely separate from the other story, because the two stories interweave- you'll see some stuff happen from another point of view, see familiar characters, etc.

Please never stop. Never has a poster so perfectly lived up to their username.

I have to disagree with Russ on this one. Please stop.

If hardly anyone else had the same problem as you really, then by pure logic, wouldn't that mean YOUR screen is the problem, not the game??

Anyways, has anyone heard what new weapons you get? In screens and interviews I haven't seen any new ones.
I can't wait to get my hands on this expansion. Finished the GTA IV story mode a few months ago, and haven't touched the game since. But I'll have to put some time into it this weekend to get ready for this expansion. I haven't really bothered to read any hands-on previews - Rockstar pretty much had me hooked when they unveiled this as something in the vein of Sons of Anarchy.
After having played Saints Row 2, it certainly helped me appreciate GTA4's refinements more.

I'm not excited by the new story at all, but those multiplayer modes do like spicy. It's just a shame nobody I know still plays it.

I tried it on two different high-definition televisions, changed the brightness and other settings both in-game and on the television...maybe I have a malfunctioning game copy. Seriously, if you had the same problem you'd be just as dreary about it..but anyways..

I am looking forward to next full game in the series.

EDIT: No worries Jake, I know what a backhanded compliment is...
What format, Louse?
PS3. Haven't had this problem with any other games.
In your display options (at least I think they are) are you operating using limited or full RGB?

Sadly, or perhaps not, you don't play as a Hasidic Jew riding a Harley. You play as the biker dude Nico meets during the museum heist, Johnny Klebitz. And, appropriately, play it from his side. Also, that one mission early in the game that Elizabetta gives you where you go inside the apartment and it turns into a clusterfuck and the cops show up and you and Playboy book it...you take it from Johnny's point of view.

As for new weapons, I believe there is a sawn off shotgun you can use while riding a vehicle and a grenade launcher and I think a machine pistol. Yes, I want this expansion in my pants right now. Hey, double meaning!
According to the article linked at the beginning of the thread, the new weapons are an automatic 9mm, a pipe bomb, grenade launcher, sawed-off shotgun and assault shotgun.

Very excited for this, can't wait to play the new multiplayer modes.

Unfortunately the PS3 version is slightly graphically inferior to the 360 version. A subtle muddy haze permeates the ps3 version, it also sports inferior anti aisling, although the jaggies are softened by the haze. Anyway the 360 version is noticeably easier on the eyes, I have both consoles so I've personally seen the difference.

Its the scope and size of the city are whats so impressive in terms of the graphics, not the actual models or textures, but i agree the graphics weren't ground breaking.

I'm assuming lost and damned is an actual expansion pack and requires one to have the original, am I right?

Yeppers.

Have they said how big this download will be? Rock Band DLC is unplayable on my machine unless I keep RB2 loaded on my hard drive so free space is getting quite low. I'll probably need to get a bigger hard drive or new machine before long.

Bees was right and I fixed the settings, but still, the graphics are so bad I'm reluctant to dive in when Left 4 Dead is awaiting...that game is based on the old Source engine, sure, but it's clear and easily playable...why can't Rockstar get its shit together and make one of these games with a solid control scheme, a fitting aiming mechanism, and a functional camera system? And the cars drive like shit as well. I eventually was passed this with San Andreas, but I can't excuse these persistent hiccups any more...and I'm sure I'd think it's a great game without the technical problems.

EDIT: Wow, that was pretty scatty...

I'd like to know this as well. In my case it's because my 20GB drive is full of paid content (various arcade games & massive Rock Band DLC). Also: if I buy the retail store version I'm assuming it's still a code-unlocked download (or like the 2nd disc in the GOTY Edition of Oblivion), right?

P.S. - How did that RB problem end up happening to you, gravedigger?

I'm not sure what anti-aisling is - neither console is doing it. The 360 is certainly pumping out some (apparently 2X) anti-aliasing, and the PS3 offers none and slightly lower resolution but the view distance, post-processing (to compensate for the lack of AA, and is what gives the slight blur - see "Bioshock") and upscaling is better.

It's a toss-up really, the 360's framerate is generally more consistant, but then - it was apparently developed with the 360 as the lead platform, which would explain why they couldn't even make the figures consistant.

They both look like shit.

Yep, it's still just a code to download Lost and Damned. Looks like this will be a definate download for me tonite since Street Fighter IV may be pushed back by 2 days.

So there's a cock in this game. Outrage, evening news stories, someone think of the children, etc.
Question, is this not something Microsoft would pick up on the "check" they do on DLC?

Does also raise the issue of expansion packs changing the rating of the original title, surely?

No, because LatD is its own seperate game. Buying GTA IV doesn't mean you're getting a digital dick.
Does LatD play without GTA4 then?
No, it requires GTAIV, but what does that have to do with anything? If I go out tomorrow and buy GTAIV by itself, I'm not getting digital tallywacker with my purchase. LatD has its own rating with "nudity" specifically stated.
If it has its own ESRB attached, it's fine.

EDIT: You do seem fascinated by digital genitalia?
You should've kept up the argument; I had "digital choad" and "digital lap taffy" on deck. A great loss indeed.

Disc read errors. I can play the songs on the disc with no problem but the first DLC song I try kills the game. It happens with RB1 and RB2. I did some reading and it seems like it's a problem with the system wanting to read information from the disc right away but it gets confused because the drive isn't spinning. All I know is that as soon as I loaded RB2 to my hard drive, all my problems went away.

Good. Let people figure out that some of these "kid's games" aren't actually made for kids.

"Billy saw a hooded avenger and now he's gay!!!"

"You have exposed your child to adult content. You are an unfit parent. Your child will be placed in the custody of Carl's Jr."
I hope this isn't too big - I'm forced to use the horrible wireless modem for Live, and anything over 500MB takes a couple hours or more to download. This might take all night.

Well, Johnny is a bit of a dick. I kinda dig the new filter on the game. Makes it feel dirty and grimy.

It's 1.78 GB.
Just got done playing a little bit of this on a friend's system.

I keep forgetting how much the music factors into my enjoyment of this franchise.

Liberty City Rock is still my favorite station. They've thrown on some Styx, The Doors, Bon Jovi, Iron Maiden and Doobie Brothers. There goes my free time.
Damn it - I woke up late this morning. I had planned to download this before I had to go to work. Looks like I will have to do this sometime tomorrow morning then.
So this is pretty immediately more entertaining than Cousins Niko and Roman.

The fact that "Renegade" came on the radio as I was cruising over the bridge has nothing to do with my positive impressions. I swear.
Only played a bit so far -- not wild about the mechanic for riding in formation. Expect that's a small aspect of the game, though. Characters are fun in the first couple missions.
Do they have a list of new songs for the game? I read that there is also a new radio station. Hopefully I'll be able to download this tonight if things don't come up.
