Talking of Jacob, he's also really into Elite: Dangerous and would commend you on your choice there (I'm waiting for more detailed planet exploration before I dip my toes into it). I think he and some friends have their own server in that game, if you get tired of playing with the public.

I gather with Elite you can play solo and avoid being outmatched by more experienced players. Jacob did mention the server thing when I wondered about the game before, but I'll give myself a bit of time to learn how to play before taking the risk of crippling his endeavours!

Welp, button pressed. Now the proud owner of the Just Cause bundle, Elite: Dangerous, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider and Mad Max. Now, if only I could tear myself away from Civ V for one session...

SFV for PS4 content code from Redbull - pretty sure it just adds Redbull logos to the costumes.  I can post another code Saturday if someone wants it.

1. Tomb Raider @2.99 or Rise of the Tomb Raider @13.99?

2. Just Cause 3 worth 7.49 with expansions?

3. Mad Max any good?

I'm also going for Sleeping Dogs at 2.99 and Elite: Dangerous at 8.99. Mulling getting the Skyrim Special Edition too because it's the only action RPG I have got into and the updated graphics look nice.

Aargh - the Steam Link and controller are now £27.70. I spent at least £60 on them both. How did I not realise the extent of these ridiculous sales?

If you already have it, you can mod original Skyrim on PC to look just as good as the SE

If your TV has optical out (or composite L/R) you can run optical from the TV to the receiver and it will patch the HDMI sound from the PS4.  Only catch is that the TV has to be turned on to play sound from the PS4, so you can't play music on your PS4 and then turn off the TV to prevent burn in.  I do this since my Apple TV and blue-ray have different HDMI ports on my TV - then optical into the receiver from the HDTV stays set to "TV", which saves some hassle.

Thanks for the tip, but sadly, I've only got it on PS3.

Thanks to a voucher Green Man Gaming sent me, giving me additional discounts in their sale, I just picked up Agents Of Mayhem for £12, which seems like a fair price for what I've seen of that game. Picked up a few things in the Steam sale but am probably not done yet, even though I know most of it will join my already-far-too-long backlog.

I said to hell with it and ordered the Steam controller as well...and it got here before the Link.

It takes a fair amount of getting used to, but the potential is off the charts; I love being able to download different controller configs and testing them out. I still haven't quite gotten the hang of using it as a mouse yet, however.

The touchpad on the right is a bit compromised since it doesn't offer the range/accuracy of a mouse and a mousemat on a desk, nor is it a good replacement for the right stick. Maybe there is some sensitivity cistomisation I can do that I haven't found yet. It works gangbusters for me where games are best played with a keyboard and mouse but aren't reliant on quick accurate aiming or camera movements.

Agreed, I tried using it to aim in Enter the Gungeon and it was really awkward, but it worked well for the keyboard/mouse games I tried.

Packing years of dedication from the Jazz Jackrabbit community, expanded multiplayer features and game modes, tons of fixes, as well as tools to play (and create) the huge library of community-made content.

Apparently, you can alter the configuration on the right pad which changes the interface and characteristics. Here...

I haven't done it yet, but a quick search online indicates it does improve the use of it as a replacement for the right stick.

I have a question for the PS4 ppl.

I just got one and I think I heard that you have to pay now to play online. It's actually a Christmas present, so I can't open it and get into it until after Santa brings it.

On the PS3 I didn't have to pay.

Is this the case? Is this also the PS+ service that gives out free games every month, or are there tiers here?

I know I'm being lazy, but I figured you guys would know what the deal is.

Thanks.

The PS+ is a separate service. Look at amazon and GameStop sometimes they have sales for both.

ETA: actually I think I have them confused ignore me.

I got a free XBox One S, my 1st xbox ever ... I was surprised you still have to pay to play online. Horrible.

That's a major reason why I went with the S over the X.  I mostly want it for the UHD, it has few exclusives of interest, and I don't want to pay for a second service.

Plus, 179.99 versus 499.99.

You need PS+ to play on Sony servers, I do believe. And yes, it's the service that gets you free games (often great ones). There was (is?) a sale on - one year for $39.00 (as opposed to $9 something a month)

PS+ is the one and only service, online gaming and the monthly games together.

Normal price is 60 for a year. They just had some sales for 40 for a year over the weekend.

So weird piggyback. I’m paying for PlayStation now and plus. Am I being hosed?

PS+ is roughly the same price as Xbox Live, but you get a ton more (at least, compared to what I remember of Xbox Live).  Along with access to Sony servers, there's 2-4 "free" games a month, often surprisingly good ones.  Metal Gear 5, seemingly all the Telltale story games (including the Game of Thrones ones which were very good), Before Dawn, and others.

I'm comfortably certain that I could game with nothing but PS+ exclusives every month and keep fairly busy.

I mean ... how much gaming do you need?

Only you can answer whether you're getting value from so many services.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I did see those sales, I'll see if they come back again.

I just sold my PS4 and PSVR last night because of this. I was tired of having to pay a monthly fee to play online. Fuck that. I’m straight up PC all the way now.

I avoided the consoles for 5-10 years (basically until ps4 pro launched) cause I was sick of paying for online only to be bombarded with ads.  Plus, consoles were getting expensive for garbage performance.

I can summarize why I came back in two words:  Online Cheating.  Entire genres are ruined on the PC due to people that seem to think it's fun to play with shit like aimbots.  If you don't play those genres, there's no reason to ever get a console except for the few exclusives that are out there.

Well, now I need to get a new bluray player.

Wait! Just remembered I have a PS3 in a closet somewhere. Problem solved!

I pretty much just use my PS4 for Single Player exclusives and that's been working like gangbusters for me.

Grim Fandango Remastered, FREE on GOG!

Fucking jump on that shit.

Link is wonky right now. Instead, just go to GOG.com, Grim is on the front page banner, claim it from there instead.

2 free tables out today for Pinball FX3 on Steam (and the other platforms, I imagine), and they're original tables, not based on any IP. I've already tried the Hercules one, and it's a blast. The other is carnival themed, I believe.
