Chewers IRL

Thread Starter
Do you have ideas of what certain Chewers might be like in real life? Do you read their posts and get a feeling for the real person, or do you psychoanalyze what people say and think you see the reality behind the facade? I'm curious what you think some Chewers are like in the real world.
Such as?

Edit: And having many of them as friends on Facebook makes it easier to reconcile their screen persona to their lives.
I want to know. If EdHocken talks in clipped. Robotic sentences. Damn straight.
I don't think about it much, but sometimes I wonder if the posters who treat every topic like one really repetitive stupid joke are normal IRL, and are just using the boards as some sort of outlet; or if they walk around in really loud suits with hand buzzers in their palms and fake dog shit in their pockets.
I'm sure most of us are terribly boring. And facebook certainly helps to reduce the mystique even further. But there are still guesses to be made. I'm gonna say

-EdHocken is probably one of the more "normal" Chewers IRL.

-Iron Maiden couldn't be friendlier, but exudes an intimidating presence (maybe a big beard, maybe lots of black t-shirts) that scares potential friends away.

-In appearance and demeanor, dreary louse is basically a mid-90's Jeremy Davies.

-Schwartz is black. (I guess everybody knows that.)

-Phil is very quiet, and people have known him for years in real life without hearing about his love for film.
I ask as many dumb questions IRL as I do on the boards, but my charming smile usually alleviates the awkwardness.
I know some people here have met me IRL and I'm curious as to whether or not I am anything like my online persona. I'm not sure.
Your online persona is that you buy a lot of Blu-Rays. So as long as that's true in real life, as well, then yes.

I actually prefer Hawaiian shirts and hand-puppets.

And I look just like my avatar.
The one I would pay real money to meet IRL is Duke Fleed. So long as there's an impervious shield of some sort between us. Otherwise, I've already met several of the ones I'm interested in, so the mystery is mostly gone.

I feel like I've known you my whole life! You really get me, man. Heh.

This isn't a dig at either side of the ever present debate on the boards, but I bet people talk about movies a lot more in real life than they do on the boards. IRL the posters here are probably the movie guy/girl of their group of friends, so always have info on the latest happenings under development that their friends wont have heard, and so will get into conversations about the main page articles all the time. Where as on the board because everyone already knows about all that stuff they don't talk about it as much.

I find even in chat it's more movie-centric.

I assume everyone looks like their avatar. If, like Nordling, they have no avatars with a face, I imagine they look like Jack Elam.

This is true for me. I am the one telling my co-workers/friends about upcoming movies and bringing old movies. Now that they realize that (I just moved a few months ago, so my friends/co-workers are all new) I am asked bunches of questions on upcoming movies, and I have CHUD to thank for all my knowledge ! I always try to steer them to CHUD, so they can find out stuff from here.

I am willing to bet that many of the posters that border on acts, are that guy in the group who always thinks he is funny, but no one else does. So he comes to the internet to continue his war on humor. Also the more normal posters are show themselves as such over time.
I tend to think of CHUD as a place of rare air. Discussion takes on a distinct tone that regular people don't get and doesn't fit anywhere else. The Chewer in me comes out when I discuss movies, and that makes sense.

Listen to my podcast. Ed sounds like Sulu. Haha.

I've met a number of Chewers, mostly from the core CHUD group in Atlanta and the DC contingent.

Without fail, we all have perfect teeth, fabulous hair, and perfect comic timing.

And LD is really, really tall.

I've only met Devin (though only briefly), and he was friendly.

Nailed it in one.

I'm pretty much the exact same in real life, for better or for worse.

In a few cases, the feeling I get for certain Chewers can't help but intrude. It's almost always based on characteristics rather than appearance, and usually quite flattering.

Has anyone else known a fellow Chewer IRL before joining? I've known scott nappo since high school.
I think for the most part, the people who post are decent regular folk that aren't always people you could be buddy-buddy with, but could have a good conversation.

Then there are the people who come in here with a schtick (Not gonna name names here, you already know) or think they're brilliant comedians ready to lay down their "comedy" on to us. Those are the ones who are suspect.

Although I increasingly get the feeling Moltisanti is more of the latter but I figure he's just some guy. A guy who seems to spend all of his time dissecting ultra-shitty action movies and nothing else. That's fine and all. But there really isn't anything else going on?
The people who I regularly talk to (via XBox Live) from Chud tend to pretty close to their message board selves.
I met Russ only briefly when he was visiting FD4. Hoping I get to buy him or Devin a beer this spring with Jonah Hex and The Expendables in town. I want to get back to Austin so I can meet a bunch of the guy's there since I follow their Drafthouse thread.

I think that the biggest difference is between the people who use handles as opposed to their real names. It's easy to be whatever you want when using an anonymous handle (see Fabong, etc).

Those of us who use our real names are probably pretty much who we are in life.

Indeed. Anonymity can breed plenty of assholes.
I hate to get lumped into the a-hole crowd for having a stupid handle. I just do not post that regular to want to waste the time (other's time) of changing my name. I would rather have my real name, but when I signed up this is what I put in.

What Swicegood said.

Now that I think about it, most of the people I'm friends with on Facebook out of this group, are the ones who use their real names. So I suppose that's just further proof.

I'd like to think that most of the Chewers I "know" are well-adjusted, normal people whose lives may not be all that interesting (also: me), but are better conversation than 99% of the population. And really, that's all that matters.
I don't know. I don't use my real name but everyone who reads the site knows what it is. I use this name to get my production company's name out there which (some of the time) seems to be a better idea than pimping my own name.

I have tons of "IRL" friends who use my board name in lieu of my real name. It's a nickname I've had for over a decade-and-a-half now.

And I look exactly like my current avatar.

Definition: A name originally used to describe someone with a dark complexion, or dark hair, SCHWARZ comes from the Middle High German "swarz," meaning black. BLACK is the English variant of this surname.

The more you know...

And the soul.

I think I'm very similar irl, but I'm not entirely sure how I come off to people on here. I am more knowledgeable about movies than most of my friends, but I don't get introduced as the Movie Buff or anything. Compulsive drinking and gambling always seem to come up first.
At work, people talk about me as the guy who will apparently say anything to anybody like he has no internal censor. So I guess I can't be accused of only being that way when hiding behind an Internet connection.

But I can't say that I have really solid ideas about who people around here are. Maybe some of the guys in the screenwriting thread, since we've read each other's stuff. There's something a little more personal about that. I feel like the various election discussions brought out a lot about people.

Heh; I travel in a few different groups - in one, I'm just one of the crew as far as movie-buffhood goes.

On the other hand, a different group of friends was playing Scene It! once; before the game started, they said having me and my wife on the same team was unfair, so they split us up. Then my team trounced her team. So they said having ME was unfair - so they played 12 people vs me. I won,* and have since carried the mantle/burden of being "Chavez, Movie Genius" in that group ever since.

* - despite my protestations that Scene It! is a flawed and inherently unfair game.
I know that feeling. I have Silver Screen and Star Wars editions of Trivial Pursuit, and nobody will play them against me. Just because they pulled a random card out of the Star Wars one that sounded ridiculous and impossible, and I knew the answer. Pussies.

Parlor games tend to interfere with my rate of alcohol consumption so I avoid them anyway.

I'm a bit of a loudmouth IRL, and I'm pretty much "the movie guy" to all co-workers who aren't as into film as me and my friends.

I'm pretty close to what you see here. But shorter. (It's a big hurdle IMO - I think people generally treat shorter people with less regard than they would otherwise. I got over it in my 20s.)

We're all self-created personas here, give or take the odd poster who melts down, so I take most of the people on the boards at face value, since odds are I'm not going to be interacting with them in real life.
I think most of you are well balanced. BTW, as I said when I was a newbie here my name is Andrés. I picked a non sense name I know (akodon is a kind of rodent). IRL I can play dumb for some minutes since I have good memory for the stuff I like. I love some good conversation but It's hard to get mine when the people around is not into the mood.

ETA I found it odd that sometimes like a hive mentality the chewers jump aboard the same TV series etc...but it's a matter of demographic, big numbers, etc...

Wait; didn't he once say he was black, like in his user title or something? Or in a post? I actually fell for this until just now (although I guess his leaping to the defense of Meatloaf, calling me uncool because I didn't like his music, really should have tipped me off).

As for the Real name/handle debate, I don't think you can blanket state that one or the other side of that debate is a particular kind of poster. I use a handle just 'cause I like it, but my real name appears on my reviews, so it isn't like it's a secret, but I'd post the same either way, regardless. Others who use handles for work related reasons (Like Death Surge, who uses a handle because he works for the FBI & sometimes they frown on internet shenanigans; remamber, thay don't have a sense of humor that they're aware of) probably do, too. Which is not to say some handle users aren't hiding behond said handles to be assholes. But there's a few folks who use their real names I can think of off the top of my head that are just as bad, if not worse.

I've met 5 Chewers IRL, and they've all been cool people. I never really stopped to think about whether or not they were like their posts would have led me to believe.
It's interesting to me how much the avatar seems to have colored people's impressions (literally). I've always been up front about being a white kid from Kansas, and other than supporting Obama, can't think of any stereotypically "black" traits I could've exhibited.

Okay. But do I post in pretty much in only one place talking about only one thing?

You can't even talk, nigga!
BobClark is really awesome at coming along and popping people's balloons with a sharp sewing needle. Hats off!

I've met Alex once or twice. Nice, gregarious. Smaller than I expected.

In real life, I'm a renowned adventurer. I'm described as tall (6'3") with craggy looks, dark wavy hair, and possessing a rangy build. My most striking features are my opaline green eyes, which can be both alluring or intimidating, as need be. I have a commanding presence which, combined with a quick, sly wit, often infuriates those opposed to me. My comical banter during stressful situations leaves observers with little doubt that I am confident of my abilities.
Arjen Rudd you are THE PITTS!!!!!!!
I thought that might have been too obscure. Clearly not the case.
I can't think of any instance where an action/adventure author has been so clearly infatuated with his own heroic creation. It reaches creepy proportions. Adding to the creepiness is the passage in ICEBERG where Pitt goes undercover as a mincing homosexual, fighting his own revulsion to do so.

CLIVE CUSSLER = ISSUES
Someone will correctly tell us this belongs in another thread eventually, but my favorite thing in all those Pitt books is the moment where Pitt meets an aged, wily fellow journeyman. They exchange important plot information and world-weariness, both taking a moment to respect and admire their similarities. Then, it turns out, the stranger was actually Clive Cussler all along! Or perhaps "Cussler..Clive Cussler." It's like it's my dementia-ridden grandpa's been telling the story. And that's nostalgia.
