Chewers IRL - Page 3

This is particularly true for the site writers like Devin, who contribute so much content, or posters like Ripoll who put so much of their (alleged) personal details out there. But I would only lay money on being right about my impressions with in a very few cases. Text-only interaction, the limited subject matter of the discussions and the cultural and age differences make it much less likely that we are reading any one person correctly.
Based on his posts, BrianM is a dick in real life.

I say true things, and that makes false people uncomfortable.

I am pleasing to the eye, and that makes men question their masculinity and hate me for it.

When I touch a dying deer the hunter feels the horror of death, so I'm not popular with them, either.

And I've got a mom thing for Mary Steenburgen.

As far as the original topic goes, I think the biggest difference is that most of our more abrasive chewers are probably more affable in person. And I'm not referring to Internet Tough Guy Syndrome or anything, but just the difficulty in transcribing tone. I'm a lot more careful about how I address people on here, because irl I can call someone a fucktard in a conversation about the best route to take on a sexual journey through the cast of Lost and my demeanor will make it clear I don't mean anything by it. On its own though, it just makes me seem like a belligerent dickhead.

Actually, I think I'm probably more thoughtful about what I post than what I say. I tend to be just as long winded, but you get the opportunity to pause & edit before you post. Once you blurt something out, it's too late to edit. The awkward pauses while I search for just the right word or way to say something aren't apparent here. I like to think I'm still pretty good w/ the spoken word as well (I am an attorney after all; if I was a lousy public speaker, that'd be a real problem in my line of work), but I've always been a better writer. Also, I'm much more fuckin' profane IRL.

I met four chewers in person this year. (And I hope it was as magical an evening for you ladies as it was for me.) To my surprise, each poster was way more personable (or maybe just way less cynical) than their board "personas" would have you believe. I'm starting to think that the board persona reads like the real persona after a shit-ton of drinks, while retaining the ability to type. Therefore I am now reading all their posts as if they were yelling them to me in a bar at 1am.

Everybody is going to be nicer in person. The aim of that meeting is to have fun, share a few drinks and stories. It's not like you are meeting to get into an argument.

Shit, I was doing it wrong.

I'm pretty sure I would have to hate you in real life, Tati. No one should be that good looking and still be a complete movie dork. Thankfully, on the boards I can picture you however I want:

I'm quiet as fuck when I meet new people. I like to sit back and watch them for a while before I open my mouth.

This is not unrelated to the fact that I've had a forums account for so long and have so few posts, most of those occurring within the last year.

My general impression is one of fat sweaty rapists, hunting and pecking between victims.

What the fuck? I don't remember meeting you.

"Be quiet," you said. "This rape doesn't have to be a murder."

That doesn't sound like Jake. He's more of a "Ssshhh...ssshhh" type.

I think the way I am on the boards is pretty much how I am in real life. Whatever someone said earlier about us all talking about movies way more IRL though? That is totally me. I'm also way more talkative in real life than I am here, purely because on here if I say the first thing that comes into my head someone will jump on it and pick holes in it. I have to choose my words carefully. In real life people are less likely to attempt to shout me down (and I'm better at shouting back if I need to) so I tend to ramble on about things a bit more.

As far as other chewers go I don't usually think too hard about how you are in real life. I know a guy in real life who reminds me of Phil so much it's creepy (he even has the same name) which is slightly weird.

Oh, and I'm dating Xagarath Ankor (who should really switch to his real name, or at least something that doesn't make him sound like a 15 year old) so I know him pretty well. He talks a LOT more in real life (and mostly about film), and gets very angry with me for having 'stupid' opinions about films (or anything else). He's how I imagine quite a few chewers to be - the kind of person who will sit down with his family at a meal time and suddenly start describing a scene from a horror movie in loving detail and put everyone off their food, then wonder what he's done wrong.

I am pretty much the same on here as I am in real life, only I tend to be more chatty.
