Don't agree with the implication that those who use their full real name are more trustworthy, pleasant, or relevant than those who use part of their name, a nickname, or more abstract handle. It's an understandable conclusion to draw elsewhere (no need to name names) but in the case of CHUD, I think that's a harder notion to sell. It ignores people trying something a little different with their profile, using the space available to reveal more about themselves than a name can.

Do people who take the "real name" route think that anyone using a joke or reference rather than an actual place as their "location" is not a fair reflection of them IRL?

Hahaha, I actually remember reading Pitt's encounter with Cussler. He was dressed as a 19th century prospector, complete with mule. In Mali!

Agreed. There's an insinuation of cowardice behind it that I might understand a bit better if this were just a talkback section or something. Most of the posters i can think of, including myself, have at some time or another posted their real names. I just stick with the nick because i like it.
I'm a nickname guy primarily because I don't want potential employers or security clearance investigators wading through thousands of posts of "I would so nail Boomer" when deciding whether to give me a job or grant me a clearance.

It isn't a state secret - I often use my real name in PMs, and I'm not shy about meeting people IRL.
I use my real name (or at least the name everyone knows me by in real life) due to the fact it forces me to be accountable for my actions in some weird way.

Same here, although anybody who reads the main site regularly knows my name anyway.
Since many Chewers only have regular interaction with one another in the forum, I really don't understand how using a handle is perceived as a buffer to personal responsibility. If someone acts the wag on here, they're gonna incur the same consequences regardless of whether they use their real name or not. If that person is worthwhile, they'll not take comfort behind their "mask"; they'll feel deflated at their misstep/s... like 3rdrate probably feels about his ridiculous Friday the 13th comments right now.
If 3rdrate had been signed up under his real name, he never would have made the stupid posts in the first place.

However, that doesn't mean everyone with a handle must succumb to the temptation for savagery. Obviously, several guys on CHUD and in this thread know how to be funny and reasonable for years without their real name on every post.
If people want my real name and I know who they are, they can get it. Hell, my real name was on my Twitter for a while until I changed it and I like my screen name.
My real name is Allan Sorensen. Now can I continue with Bitches please?

Before I joined the forum, I was a bit naive in thinking that basically every Chewer was "of a level." It's possible 3rdrate just may not have paid attention and wasn't trying to stir it up/throw something out there to get attention. If so, the name thing doesn't really come into it for me.

I seem to remember reading comments from people I'd consider board regulars (and who may well, as a result, be known by others IRL) that were hardly ambiguous in their attacks on either writers or other figures of note.

And here I was hoping you had the ballsiest parents ever! You've ruined the mystery.

Yeah, I think some of our more sensitive brethren are making these comments more sweeping than anyone intended. It's not like the only reason anyone would use a handle is to enable horrible wankery. But having your real name attached to everything you post does have a moderating influence. At least on those of us capable of feeling shame.
I've found that I'm far less likely to flame out on somebody since I changed my username. I'm not saying this would be the case for everybody, but speaking personally, it makes me feel more accountable.
Back on the original topic, after recently adding Greg David to my facebook friends, I realized that 1) I have long held the belief that he was a swarthy Persian gentleman, 2) this is evidently not the case, and 3) I cannot for the life of me remember how such a belief arose.
I'm half Assyrian and half Dutch. I've actually made mention several times of Middle Eastern ancestry, so your memory isn't faulty.
I'm as awesome on the boards as I am in real life.
I now feel creepy and insecure about using a fake handle. You Real-Namers are just so much better, aren't cha?
I don't think anyone said the Real-Namers are better or that the Pseudonyms are the sole source of grief and strife. Just that in most cases, not using your real name makes flights of dickery that much easier.
I was just joking. I'm a Richard as well!
You certainly seem like a Dick.

I'll probably still call you Frank, because I don't remember your IRL name.
I picked my screen name because I was on a 'Dune' kick at the time. A lot of you that I'm friends with on here know my real name and can hopefully vouch for the fact that I'm a pretty easy-going guy. I certainly don't use a fake name to deliberately stir up any trouble with anyone. I've considered changing to my actual name, but I really didn't see much point in it.
I couldn't judge most people here based solely on their opinions. There's some people who show their age more than others, some who are a little more opinionated - but I doubt any of it reflects who they are in reality.

Handful of chewers know my real name, it's hardly a secret - but thanks to google, i'd rather not have students and colleagues being able to track my viewing habits.

Could prove slightly detrimental to my state of employment.

Yep that's the same situation here and also along PM, mails to the staff etc there's plenty of ways to track me...
Absolutely zero need to defend a pseudonym on these boards. Please quit it.
It's a rebuttal to Swicegood's claim that using your real name suddenly makes you more authentic.

It's a fair dispute, especially since some seem to agree.

Tell that to CHUD writer Andre Dellamorte.
I didn't actually make most of those movies I talk about.
I'm about the same here as I am in the real world, only a little nicer and chattier.
Wait a minute, is Richard Dickson's real name Richard Dickson?

And I spent so much time cross-referencing names on IMDB.

That's not even what I meant. My point was that it's easier to be a douchebag when there is no credibility required when hiding behind a mask.

I can think of a dozen awesome chewers who don't use their real names off the top of my head (McNooj, Tati, Rath, Cobretti, Nachos etc...). But the biggest douchebags have tended to have handles as opposed to using their real names (Fabong, Isolder's bangs, Copperlocke etc)

Man people, it's not like I said you were ALL worthless cunts....
Bangs was banned, right?
No, he just changed his name to "MissZooey."

So if Fabunk named himself Ignacio Vidal or Joaquin Holmes he could have lasted more around here? Amazing.

I see Richard Dickson, but still read it as Poxy von Sinister.

IRL I'm quite the chatterbox, and I talk WAY too much about just about anything. Mostly movies of course. I tend to be friendly and approachable, but at the same time, I sometimes like to keep to myself.

Also for some strange reason some of the folks here on the boards have been led to believe I'm Canadian, mostly because of my French first name. They've of course been nicely corrected that I'm a natural born U.S. citizen and resident of Texas.
My real name is Jake. I'm sure you might be waiting for some big payoff, but them's the breaks and I'm currently sleeping on a futon in West Hollywood post-breakup and listening to Ryan Adams' 'La Cienega Just Smiled', so there goes all the allure. I'm a broken man but at least I'm close to the Arclight and the New Bev, so that kicks ass.
Stelios is my real name, unsurprisingly. I didn't go for the full name because it felt kind of awkward as a board name. And as for my character I exhibit the same lack of charisma in real life as I do on the boards.

Also at the risk of sounding pathetic if any of you guys are ever in my neck of the woods feel free to give me a notice. I'd very much enjoy acting as a tour/bar guide for any of you.

For the record, I like your style. And not just because you more or less quoted my offer to EdHocken. I would say that, though.

This seems to have turned into some kind of confessions thread. Or personals ad.

To be fair, I was just being dumb. And trolling for sex.

Frankly when are we not trolling for sex?

And Bobby, if employment holds and things work out. You'll see my yank bastardness in August of '10.

Yes, I have ideas of what certain Chewers might be like in real life based on what they post (that was the question, remember?). When posters write enough or reveal enough personal info about themselves, I definitely begin to look behind their statements and words on occasion to "read between the lines" based on who the person really is. This is particularly true for the site writers like Devin, who contribute so much content, or posters like Ripoll who put so much of their (alleged) personal details out there. But I would only lay money on being right about my impressions with in a very few cases. Text-only interaction, the limited subject matter of the discussions and the cultural and age differences make it much less likely that we are reading any one person correctly.

I reckon i'm more thoughtful about things I say and believe in real life and talk about films a whole lot more. Mainly cos most of the people on here have already said all the intelligent and moronic shit that I could say.

My name's Ben, if anyone cares. Sackley's an old nickname that has an amusing story and memory attached to it, so its my online persona on more sites than this one. I would change it on here, but frankly i'm ashamed of some of the things i've posted in the past and don't really want them associated with my real name.
