Kings on NBC

This is a new show starting mid March, I think the 15th. Our station just got a shitload of promo stuff, including the pilot, which I just finished watching. BTW, there will be spoilers.

It's pretty interesting. It's a retelling of sorts of the story of David, from the Bible. Yeah, I know. Weird. It seems to take place in this alternative history of the world. A young man in the military, David, destroys a tank, called a Goliath, and goes to the capital of the kingdom to meet the king. War, intrigue, heroism, sacrifice...all that shit, a lot very tied in to the story of David, down to him taking off his armor before fighting Goliath. Some of the allusions are a bit on the nose (David Shepherd, really?) and some are hidden unless you REALLY remember Sunday school (Goliath was from Gath and the enemy nation they are fighting, where the Goliath tanks are from, is Gath) but it really kind of works. I do wonder how far they are going to take the David mythos, because they've already somewhat strayed, what with the king's son and David not becoming fast friends. McShane is damn good as King Silas and the monologues he gets to give and the dictations to his scribe are cool. The kid playing David does a good job of portraying this noble, naive and nervous young man.

All in all, I think it's worth checking out when it airs. It was enough to make me stick around for the next couple of episodes at least. And, one of the highest compliments I feel I can pay a show...I wasn't bored.

I've read the online script for the pilot episode as well.

Seems interesting. But my main issue is that if they are following the Bible David route, we more or less know how this series is going to end.

Not much of a surprise, isn't it? I see this as a miniseries than a series.

I'll admit to only watching the pilot of this when it first aired. That was a mistake. Out of boredom, I started screening the subsequent episodes on Hulu and the show goes to really interesting places with Saul/Silas and the rest of the cast once the world is established. This could have been really interesting. The show is pretty much tailor made for season-long character arcs involving the individual kings, with several involving the Davidic line itself, and this world's version of the Babylonian Exile would have been an awesome series finale.

Why they sold this so poorly and treated it like the redheaded stepchild of the network's schedule is beyond me.

Yes, very good. Kinda disappointed that I haven't seen anymore episodes. Was this canceled?

Yeah, it was cancelled after they changed its timeslot like three different times and staggered the scheduling following the ad campaign that purposely gave no hint of the central concept of the show whatsoever. Shocking, I know. ETA: Interested parties can check it out here.

I miss this show a lot. It was great! Great cast, interesting episodes and the dialogue was wonderfully written. *Sigh*
