This news just made my otherwise shitty week. IDW is reprinting every Bloom County strip in a five volume hardcover set.

I am absolutely giddy with anticipation.

Check it out..

I'm going to buy the hell out of these.

Finally!!!

I wonder if they'll include the Billy and the Boingers ep.

This is truly grand news. Thanks for the heads-up, Devildoubt.

I STILL have my Billy and the Boingers EP, by the way.

THe idea of Context pages is great. So people who were not around in the late 70's and 80's can get all the jokes.

Just awesome.

I'll trade my original flexi of Billy and the Boingers to the person who wants to buy these for me.

I agree. Now I won't have to explain to my 26 year-old girlfriend who Lee Iococca was and why those three or so strips riffing on him are fucking hilarious.

There is no context for the wind blowing through the feet of Caspar Weinberger.

I think the first volume was released today. Anyone pick it up?
No, but it's on my Christmas list for this year.

That is all kinds of cool. I've got the EP but a shirt would be unendingly awesome at clubs around here.

I was skeptical of these releases at first, having held on to all my Bloom County books over the years. I am sold with the inclusion of context pages. THAT is truly awesome. Anyone know if these include Breathed's really, really early college stuff? Some was included in the Classics of Western Civilization retrospective collection but the OOP book is ungodly expensive.

For the college crowd without the dough: many of the original books are available for super cheap online. If you are on the fence pick up one. You'll be sold on Opus and the rest in no time.

Despite my earlier post, I broke down and picked Vol. 1 up from Amazon. My Bloom County love knows no bounds, it seems. This edition does include a bunch of Breathed's "Academia Waltz", but not all of it. Funnily enough, many of the "Academia" strips included were repurposed for later "Bloom" strips ("Pear Pimples for Hairy Fish Nuts", being a prime example). I have all of the original books, but I would recommend Vol. 1 for the die hard fan. It's also worth noting that, due to publisher demands, the original run of books did not contain ALL of the "Bloom County" strips.

What did you think of the annotations?
I just bought this as a gift for my older brother but of course inspected the contents to, uh, make sure everything was in order. The annotations are just a brief one- or two-sentence gloss next to a strip explaining a referenced name or event.
Yeah, I just received the book yesterday and stopped reading after about 25 pages. So far, the annotations don't seem to provide any great insight, although they're fun to read. One comments on how that particular strip was where Breathed actually realized that drawing "Bloom County" could be, y'know, fun. It's about 70 strips into the run!

Yeah, they picked a lot of odd things to annotate. There are a lot of obscure figures from the 80s that aren't discussed at all. All in all, I think the historical ones are pretty hit or miss.

The BB ones are great though.
