Amazing Race - Season 14

Only interesting casting is writer/director Mike White and his dad.

I seriously think they cast this thing by filling in the stereotypes:

-- bickering couple
-- two gay dudes
-- team where one person has a disability
-- token black family (my favorite was the year their name was Black)
-- dumb blondes
-- hicks from the sticks

I watched this tonight actually my wife got me into the show. It really is the only Reality TV/competition/couple/win a million $$-type show that feels authentic. Its the only one i'll watch and I can see why it wins the Emmy almost every year.

That being said I'm rooting for the 2 stunt-men friends.

"Black family, you're the last team to arrive. You have been eliminated from the Amazing Race"

Go Mike White!

The Cheese Hill challenge was the stuff of legend. I am shocked and disappointed that someone didn't get severely injured... what with the sliding and careening cheese wheels and all.
Really. One of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. That deaf kid eating shit had me howling.
Rolling cheese was awesome!
I really wish the show had set that challenge to the tune of "Yakkety Sax".
I was disappointed that there wasn't some payoff to the whole cheese thing, like the actual workers showing some obvious trick with those carriers that everyone overlooked.

I was sort of thinking that too but I guess the biggest trick to it would really be not to produce your cheeses on steep hillsides.
I wonder what happened to that wacky southern gothic couple with the really loud pink/black clothing.
I think what killed everyone on the cheese thing was the wet ground. My guess is the test run was done when the hill was dry.

I also like the hick couple from Virginia: Steve and Linda. They're pretty funny especially seeing them in Europe; talk about a culture shock.

The teaser for next week showing her standing next to a highway while crying "I never shoulda gona down that mountain!" was pretty spectacular. Rednecks lost and alone in Europe is bad news for everyone.
I'm guessing you shouldn't get too attached to the redneck couple.

And they were the only ones who fashioned a sled and pulled the cheese downhill!
Me, I'm rooting for the Deaf Guy (WHO IS ALSO GAY), the Stuntmen, Mike and Mel, hot redheads, or the GQ Asians.
Tonights episode was pretty dull. The challenges were boring and it felt like the majority of the episode was just following the hapless Victor and Tammy wandering the countryside. At first I felt bad for them since their plane got turned around and cost them like six hours but by time they had hiked an entire mountain I was ready to grab Victor and throw him back down. They are going to need a really good leg next week to make up for it, though I guess the plane bottle necks to Siberia(cant imagine many flights going there every day) should give them a good chance to get ahead once more.
Any week where one team is completely out of it ten minutes into the show cuts down the tension pretty handily.

I liked this one though, because I dislike Victor intensely, and seeing him go from smug self-satisfaction to crying because he came in 8th was a great arc.

And hey, we lost a boring team! Always good.
I like how the departing guy was the only one covered in that fake blood. He must have broken that board over his head.

Yeah, I didn't quite get how that happened. I mean he was completely covered in that fake blood.

As a former gymnast, I would have loved to have done the Roadblock.

It's hard not to believe in karma when Mike wins the leg that has a trip going to his favorite travel destination.

Victor's sister is going to kill him before the race is over. He's going to get flung down a mountain or something.

I love how Phil calls him out on being upset (the guy is streaming down tears) and he's like, "I'm not upset. Just tired from a long day." He's got some personal issues to work out. It's clear he's never had anyone challenge his authority and has never had to admit he was wrong.
And didnt he then go on to say he was disappointed in his sister having let him down or did I just make that up because it sounds like something he'd say? Im torn on their team because Tammy seems like a nice person and Victor just seems like a dick.

I thought I heard that too, and had to rewind it in disbelief. It turned out I just misheard him. Still a dick, though.

How bout this boring episode? Couldn't get enough of that log-piling, shutter-cobbling, trying-to-guess-a-Russian-name action? Me neither!

I'm not as long time a fan of this show as I am Survivor, but this does seem like a weakish cast. Only one team really worth liking (Mel and Mike), and the only thing resembling an asshole is Victor, and he's more just annoying than dickish. I'm missing the magic Coach is bringing to Survivor, I suppose. Still, travel destinations!

Eventually, someone in some foreign city is going to kill these two cheerleaders. Talk about Ugly Americans.

Yea, one of them even pointed out specifically that the other talks to non-English speakers like they are children and they both just thought it was funny. As much as the two short guys annoy me I really hope those girls let eliminated first.

Mike and Mel, nooooooooooooooooo!

Well, there's officially not a single team I care about any more. Watching this show is just an exercise in seeing how it plays out.
I'm pulling for My Deaf Son, simply because they're the only likeable team remaining.

Plus, the mom almost died last night.

I also could stomach a win by the Asian siblings because the sister is pretty cute and likable, but Mel and Mike were the heart of this season. Bummer.
I felt bad for it afterward(especially after she had heat exhaustion) but it was pretty funny to see Margie yelling at Luke while riding on the rickshaw in an attempt to get his attention. It just seemed like of all the people in the world who should have known better it was her but I guess its just reflex.

There are times I swear those two are a little ... more than brother and sister, if you know what I mean.

One of the highlights of the India portion of the trip was Luke crying over the poor kids in the street side-by-side with the cheerleaders crying because of all the poor goats and cows with no food.
Heh, everyone seems to have a pet team left (Asians, deaf). Not me. With Mel and Mike gone, I may not finish this season. That's the problem with Amazing Race. If the best racers are boring or irritating, you're fucked.

I'm going with the boobish midget twins or the redheads, because I actively dislike everyone else. Or maybe I'm out.
Absent an Asian fetish, how anyone could root for Victor and ? is beyond me. They take type-A personalities to a whole different level.

Speaking of Asians, was anyone else surprised by CBS airing the vaguely racist behavior of the midgets when they started the rickshaw leg? "Aahhhh, hachee, chacheee, hachee." The only thing missing was the fake buck teeth and the "Ah, me so solly" line. Obviously, I loved it.

Also, I will root for the red heads because they are eye candy. Plain and simple.
That's why I was pulling for the blondes -- they were cute without being the condescending xenophobes the cheerleaders seem to be.

For me, it's more about rooting against teams at this point, which can be just as fun as rooting for someone.

True, and the travelogue aspect of the show is always interesting even if there are no decent teams left. Compare that with Survivor, which is fucking death when there is no one left to root for.

This is true, but it's somehow easier to root for the arrogant and the crazy on Survivor. On Amazing Race, I genuinely only like the characters I actually like, if that makes sense.

Totally. I hope Coach sticks around to the end of this season's Survivor, if only to annoy all the other players. Plus, nothing beats his "evil Erin" face. That was pure comedy.
They may not have gotten eliminated last night, but the Stunt Dwarfs are so absolutely screwed. A four hour penalty and a speed bump? The other teams are going to have to encounter major disasters for these guys to have a chance.

I did love how utterly clueless they were that they were in a car full of transvestites though.
That was some exciting television. I loved the emotion by the sisters at the end. They were both responsible for leaving their stuff, so not only did they make it, but have such a lead that they should be guaranteed another week, barring a catastrophe.

I wonder if the stuntmen have ever done a Western, because they sure know how to shoot themselves in the foot.
You'd have thought that when the Redheads went back for their stuff right in front of everybody, that would have clued them in that maybe they weren't coming back to that spot.

It's one thing to leave their backpacks, but to leave the fanny pack with their money and passports? That's just a no-no. The sisters are lucky that the bag was still there.

The dentures challenge was not only disgusting, but kind of demeaning. And I'm all for breaking stereotypes, but has the deaf kid actually performed any tasks well? It seems like the mom has done everything.

I miss Mel and Mike. They seem like the only contestants that truly appreciate the experience of being able to travel the world (save for mom and son). Everyone else are raving lunatics, yelling at cabbies, acting entitled, and treating locals like personal servants. Its really off-putting to watch the remaining contestants.

Not to mention the one girl's shoes. No way in hell I'm taking my shoes off in a foreign country.

That's apparently an actual market stall where people go to buy used dentures. The proprietor does exactly what Margie had to do -- they keep trying used dentures until they find a pair that fits, and the person buys them. No idea where the used dentures come from, and I'm not all that interested in finding out.

Isn't there a rule that each team member has to do an equal number of tasks? If so, that kid is due.

All they need is a flight or challenge that can only be completed at a certain time (i.e. - when a park, attraction, etc. opens up) to cause a bottleneck and let them catch up.
Yeah, I thought about that after I wrote that. This being a non-elimination leg really saved their asses.
I don't have a team that I really care for left in the race. I was rooting for the stunt dwarfs early on but they've made one bonehead move after another, its kind of hard to root for them now.

I would go for the cheerleaders based on their cuteness but they've been acting like such "bad Americans" in foreign lands I hope they get out soon!
I'm still rooting for the Asian sibs. They seem to be relaxing and enjoying the race unlike their early legs.
This episode would have been better if Tammy and Victor had managed to get seperated from the others. It wasnt much fun watching two other teams following them the entire leg.

The whole bumping into each other thing was felt like it was blown way out of proportion. Although in the end when Margie equated the adversity of being deaf to being black the look on Victor's face was pretty priceless.
Wow, for a couple of people who are constantly saying deaf people can do anything hearing people can do, Margie and Luke were sure ready to play the Poor Deaf Kid card tonight.

Agreed. I thought for sure Victor and Tammy would try and ditch folks as they've been doing that all season long.

I fast forwarded through all that crap. Did Margie really say that?
Yeah, she claimed Kisha and Jen were laughing at Luke signing and told them they should know what it's like since they're black. And the thing is, they were laughing more at the ridiculous lengths to which they were taking this argument, not at Luke.

That's funny. We watch this with our kids, and I seriously wanted to just zoom past that. I don't get why the producers even drug that out sooo much.

When all is said and done, and they watch the tape, Margie and Luke will owe Keisha and Jen an apology.
