Watchmen Motion Comics

Anybody watch the motion comics? I was planning on rereading Watchmen, since its been almost a decade since my last visit, but I can't decide if the motion comics would be better.

No, they wouldn't.

It's right up there with the colorized Casablanca and the '97 Star Wars rerelease.

Actually just finished listening to a podcast of an interview with the guy who came up with the idea and sold Snyder and Levitz on it. It's clearly a labor of love, and an impressive technical achievement (I love his description of an online scoring session where he's in Santa Monica, working in real time with the orchestra in Prague). And the actor that reads it (his name eludes me) is actually quite good.

But as others have said, a reading that might make a good audio book just doesn't work (for me, anyway) juxtaposed against the visuals: it's not just the awkwardness of the female voices, but the whole "on-the-nose" aspect of seeing and hearing the same material simultaneously.

So, no, not a substitute. But kind of interesting to watch after you read the book. Though I will admit I never got past Chapter One of the motion comic.

I watched the first 'issue' out of curiosity, and while it's not a terrible idea, the voice work renders it pointless. The guy's role-playing ranges from passable (Rorschach) to weird (the female voices) to downright terrible (the two cops at the beginning). It just isn't worth it.

There's a colorized Casablanca?

I only watched the first one that was free on Itunes. I would've liked to see it with a proper voice cast. I thought it was cool to see the panels in motion but not enough to listen to Silk Spectre sounding like Dr. Girlfriend for 12 chapters.

Saw Gibbons' appearance at the Apple store in SF tonight, and he pretty much echoed my feelings: he thinks the visuals, and audio, are both impressive, but he's not keen on the way they fit together.

He did say, though, that while many of his contemporaries share his reservations, younger people (like his teenage stepdaughters) seem to take to it right away.
