NIN & Janes Addiction

They're going to do an extensive tour this year. I for one, am extremely excited. It's also apparently going to be the last we hear of NIN for some time, and their section of the tour is going to be greatly scaled down from the Lights In The Sky tour. Discuss...

Wow, it's like 1991 again.
Was thinking the same thing.

Once again, I feel really old.

Trent Reznor's comments:

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Trent

So wait, this is the original Jane's lineup? I assumed it was Perry and whoever he felt like including.

I believe it's the original. Was Navarro the original guitarist?

ETA: just checked. Yes, original line up.
Including original bass player Eric Avery? Cause he hasn't worked with them in years.

I attended the original Lollapalooza in '91.

Him too.

There's nothing I'd rather be part of than a bunch of 40-somethings moshing around and singing "Ain't No Right" Kumbaha-style.

This is the Alternative Rock equivalent of Jimmy a Buffet concert.

Don't knock Jimmy Buffet; I saw him about 15 years ago at the Target Center here in MN and he put on one hell of a show. Granted, I was bombed out of my mind for the entire show, but that's beside the point.

I'm curious as to what Trent means by this break. Just a break for touring, or will he still be making albums? Me wants mo' Ghosts(or a soundtrack, preferably)!

Arenas, I assume? Pass.

They might as well go full on and redo the whole '91 festival.

Well, I just confirmed it through wiki (jane's addiction). They've already played some shows in 2008 together.

Also, you can read the same Trent post I put up above here:
nin.com

Or, if you need photo proof of the reunion, snoop around here:

I saw them already on their previous reunion tour in Belgium, here:
http://janesaddiction.org/img/tour/2...nes_poster.jpg

Although that was sans Avery, and for the love of me can't remember if it was worth it, since I was pretty much zonked out of my mind on shrooms (which also led me to tremendously enjoy Guns'n'Roses at same festival, though all my friends insist that was a severely crap show). They only did one post-breakup song then so it was mostly a jukebox, so I guess I was satisfied with it.

Funny thing I remember Nickelback playing immediately before them on the same stage, to a chorus of disgruntled elderly JsA fans already in place, who met Kroeger's every howl of 'Owyafeelbelzjuuuum' with wolf howls and middle fingers.

Still on the fence about this... could be great could be forgettable. Crappy youtubes of the La Cita show look promising though.
I'd definitely consider going, but I'm not sure I can take Dave Navarro seriously anymore.

Jimmy Buffet rules.

I'm going to hit the show for sure man. And yeah, it'll be a bunch of 30-40 somethings moshing (till their feet start to hurt) and having a blast (till it's time to hit the sack cause we got a meeting the next day).

Pitchfork referred to this as the NIN/JA tour, which earns them a little bit of slack from me for their next pretentious review.
As someone who never saw either live, I'll say they better swing through Houston. They better damnit!! And 1991 or not they're still worth the price of admission if they are "on" that night.
I saw yesterday that they are playing The Woodlands, B_Metal. No word on when tickets go on sale yet. Probably the worst possible venue for the show though. I've seen both live once, and NIN was probably the best live show I've been to, so I'm extremely excited.

No stop in MN, shit.

Yeah, crappy venue but I'll still try and go since it may be a "last chance" type deal.

SORT OF on topic (but not really)... went to see the Sex Pistols a couple of years ago and the whole "guys older than they think they are jumping up and down like it was a long time ago" thing was very funny. The Pistols came on blazing, the whole place went ABSOLUTELY mental, then one song later it looked like every single one of the crowd was having a heart attack - you could HEAR the wheezing!!! Everybody then seemed to get a second wind, but we certainly weren't pogoing as high as we had been 10 minutes earlier!!! BACK ON TOPIC - Still one of the only sounds to still get me on a dancefloor even now - the dogs barking at the start of Been Caught Stealing.

Free download. Six tracks. Two unreleased songs by NIN, Jane's Addiction, and Street Sweeper.

I haven't heard them yet but will be downloading soon.
I like the NIN tracks, but I didn't even bother with others.
God, the NIN tracks are embarrassing. At least the music to the second one("Non-Entity") is pretty good. Just fucking score a movie already Trent.

The first of the 2 Jane's songs("Chip Away") is pretty interesting with just percussion, and the other I'd put right up there with their old stuff.

Never heard of Street Sweepers before, but they remind me a bit of Rage Against the Machine, but without all that pesky rage.
chip away and whores are 2 old ass songs from the 80s that they finally did in the studio. both are on the first live cd I think. the live versions are better overall but these arent bad

apparently they wrote new stuff as a band too that they will debut on the tour
post #33 of 51
Ah, I wasn't aware. I've never followed Jane's closely. NIN, however...

But hey, free.
I'll be there in Atlanta. Can't wait.

I'm a relatively new NIN convert, but Lights In The Sky was an absolutely amazing audio/visual experience. It's very difficult to not be hyperbolic about it, and I can't imagine ever missing one of his shows ever again. I'll be really excited to see a stripped-down concert experience this time.
Really would have dug an MN show. Jane's was the first rock band I ever got into. Still find it hard to beat the live cut of Three Days. Although, the whole crowd consisting of 40 year olds is none too appealing to a 20 year old.

its cool. I recommend checking their live record out if you dig those recordings though.

I am quite happy with a free ep as well

Considering the original, piano based version was written as a response to Hurricane Katrina, I can't see it as anything but Trent tearing the soul out of his own song.

Probably due to all that Tom Morello awesomeness involved.

No Cleveland date for a NIN tour. Know what that means? Fall leg of the tour.

Here's hoping. ONE Canadian date is some weak sauce.

It's the 20th anniversary of PHM. If he doesn't come here, he fucking hates Cleveland.

Haha I just hit them up on Wikipedia. I thought their guitarist was just doing a Morello impression. Go figure.

I didn't know about the project till about 4 days ago so don't feel bad.

Also a houston date seems to have not appeared. WTF
post #44 of 51
Trent can write sorta-decent, sorta-average songs in his sleep. The two on this EP are examples of that. If they were on an album I wouldn't mind them as much, but pretty forgettable on their own.

Depressing. here's hoping for a second leg to the tour. I can't believe he would skip Houston. NIN filled the Toyota Center the last two tours here.

Tickets bought! I hope nostalgia does not bite me in the ass.

You guys realize they're pretty much ONLY playing outdoor amphitheaters, right? Does your town have one of those pretty/Live Nation owned amphitheaters? If not... THAT'S whey they're not stopping there.

I can't really argue with $19.91 lawn seats, though.
I saw Nails last year at Lollapalooza(along with Rage and Radiohead). One of the best concert experiences I have ever had.... well, except for the part during Nail's set when my buddies wife woke up some guy who was passed out in front of us and he started to puke all over himself.

I got a pair of $60 lollapalooza "golden tickets" 3-day pass this year(normally are around $210 per ticket) so I should get to see Janes, and my buddy's wife has an industry contact that is going to get us "artist" seating at Nails(but Jane's will not be there since they will be at Lolla). Should be a good summer....
