14 yr old arrested for refusing to stop texting in class

Introducing the new Samsung Aphone (ass phone)

Teacher told her to stop, she wouldn't. Teacher called office. Office called cops. Cops questioned the little trouble maker (prior problems out of the girl). She repeatedly claimed she didn't have a phone. Male cop called for a female cop to frisk the little so and so. Female cop magically pulled nonexistent phone out her ass. (Of course not literally but you get the joke). Arrested, but released in mom's custody. Banned from school property for a week.

Banned from school? well that will teach her!

More schooling would be a far better punishment then letting her stay home where she can just text away!
Schools actually need to call cops to deal with these things?
They probably called the cops to avoid any kind of liability. If one of the faculty did a search on the kid, they would probably have opened themselves up to a lawsuit. Getting law enforcement involved mitigates that risk.

But also ties up much-needed police assets while they deal with farce of this magnitude...

Oh, I agree entirely. It's ludicrous that our school system has become a place where the faculty can't enforce reasonable discipline without risking a lawsuit from an angry parent.

... which is partly why kids like this one act the way they do.

Kids today can get away with shit that would have gotten me expelled from school. Alot of the parents are oblivious as to what their kids REALLY do in school, and they don't care.
At times it feels as if sometime during the early nineties someone flipped a switch and people forgot how to raise their children. That's such an old man thing to say, I know.

What happened to the paddle? They used to threaten us with that back in the old days. When I would walk 20 miles to school in the snow...with an onion on my belt.

Slackers!

A litigious society and political correctness turned certain educational authority figures (and their methods) into dinosaurs. It's time to get John Hammond to clone a few.

Goddamn, am I glad I teach in Europe.

The threat of the paddle of my elementary school filled all of our young minds with a sense of dread that rivaled Sauron. Fucking kids today have it soft!

Actually I think that statement is ridiculous. Only because it's not nearly an accurate description of the way it is for most of the kids today. It's not that they have it soft or easy, they are actually in positions of authority. They curse, fight, fuck, whatever and all the while the only thing the teachers can do is call the office and send home requests for the parents to come to school. Some parents don't give a shit anyway, others are fooled by the act that the kids put on when they are present.

From the police report, when she got caught, this little bitch came in laughing. FUCKING LAUGHING!!!! Who laughs when they get caught? That's supervillian shit. Seriously though, clearly that child does not give a damn about being in school. Strike that, now that I think of it, slackers do miss being at school but only as a convenient social environment.

When I was that age my teachers used to beat us with rape if we did something wrong. And especially if we did something right.
Who cares if she was laughing? She's a 14 year old.

This whole thing is beyond ridiculous. There was no need to get the police involved. That police report is surreal, we really needed that much investigation because someone was texting in class? And now you get fined for that?

I'm actually surprised the police officer didn't tell teachers and principals to do their job and got the heck out of there.

I'm afraid it's not that simple. It's a "you're damned if you do and damned if you don't" situation. Teacher asks for the phone. Student refuses. Teacher tries to to take it. Student refuses. Teacher takes phone by force. Parents are called, then lawyers are called, school gets sued and teacher loses her job for "doing her job".

As far as the question of "who cares if she was laughing?" You aren't at all disturbed by the fact that this 14 year old child lied repeatedly not only to school admins, but to a police officer as well. A stupid and obvious lie. Then she gave false information in an attempt to cover the lie. And when she was caught she laughed about in their faces. She has no fear of authority or respect for the law. None. And she's 14. Honestly, you should care.

Eh. I'm relatively familiar with Wauwatosa, and I'm not sure I'd characterize those police assets as "much-needed."

Sure, it'd be nice if the faculty had taken care of this instead of the cops, but like Judas said, their hands were probably tied to some extent. Plus, I totally sympathize with any teacher who has a no-texting policy and enforces it.

People on this board (rightfully) get up in arms when people text and talk on the phone in movie theaters; it's way more idiotic and disruptive in a classroom setting.

She couldn't have ordered her to go to the principal's office and if she kept refusing to give up the phone call her parents so they can pick her up (and also suspend her)? They really needed a criminal investigation to get to the bottom of this mystery?

She's an immature girl. What did you want her to do, cry in panic as she watches adults blow things out of proportion, ask her to let them do a body search and freaking arrest her for texting???

You think she had some sort of cynical understanding that this was being "blown out of proportion" by the adults? The reason she was laughing was that she had absolutely no respect for authority.

Ordered her to the office? She ordered her to stop texting in the middle of class and we see how that turned out. You don't really expect that this sweet young innocent honest child was gonna get up walk out of class and go turn the phone in. Via the police report, she tried to ditch the phone on another student who refused. The cop saw her do it and the other student confirmed it.

Criminal investigation? Most schools have police presence on campus at all times now. So he was already there, hence his familiarity with the student. He was aware of the danger of searching the girl so he radio for a female officer. A female parole officer came. Not a detective or squad car or S.W.A.T.

Personally I'd expect her to do what children (and adults) are supposed to do when you are caught doing something stupid by the police. Laugh in their face. Oh wait...

When I was in kindergarten, we had "cubby holes" where we kept all our shit during class. Bring back cubby holes; put your goddamn phone in there, and get it back after your 47 minute class is over.

I'm reminded of the teacher's drawer in A CHRISTMAS STORY. Wax teeth, etc.

So, whatever happened to detention? Girl won't stop texting in class, give her a week's detention and let her folks know what's up.
Frankly, detention isn't a strong enough punishment for what she did. Lying to the school and THEN to the police should carry a much stricter penalty than merely detention. I wouldn't rule out expulsion, especially if the school wants to make an example of her.
I love how on this site there is a thread devoted to school shootings, and multiple pages of jokes every time a chimpanzee rips off a face, a wrestler annihilates his family, or a Greyhound passenger starts decapitating his fellow passengers or whatever. But a 14 year-old acts disrespectful to authority figures and the future of western civilization is in jeopardy.

I'm not even that sure about expulsion, but arrest is out of the question. If they wanted to avoid being sued they screwed up, because I'm sure that now the lawyers of the girl's family can escalate.

If only this girl had a chimp for a teacher. That woulda taught her!
Just DESTROY the goddam phone....In her FACE.
(Meaning, let her watch; not smashing it between her eyes.)
End of story.

Message sent to her AND her parents.
