I'm thinking of the KTMA ones, I believe. I've seen a few bootlegs of those, and they're tough.

Another great drama pilot: "Mad Men"

I love Mad Men and Friday Night Lights more than some of my relatives, but I feel like both shows are much better than their pilots. Not that their pilots are bad, but I don't think they're quite as great as what came afterward.

The Battlestar Miniseries isn't that great. It's way too long for my liking, but '33' is greatness.

Just cos I commented on it in the other thread, but 'Millennium' had a pretty great pilot.

While lamenting cancelled shows I'll also mention 'Profit' and cult favourite 'Eerie Indiana'.

The 'Fringe' pilot was fucking terrible and though I'm hearing positive things I can't bear to go back to it because I've never had a show make me aggressively dislike a lead actress so much.

You obviously have never seen Dead Like Me.

People really don't like the first season of Seinfeld? I think it's pretty great. I like how it was very unlike other sitcoms from the start, mostly because they had no idea how to make a sitcom. I think "Male Unbonding" is pretty great. The pilot is still very entertaining, even though it's basically a different show. I agree the stand-up segments could go. Obviously it improved, but it's not on the same level of mediocrity as say, The Simpsons pilot.

Seinfeld's first season is only weak by comparison. At the time, it was pretty groundbreaking. I don't think it's fair to poo-poo it simply because it got so much better later.

Something that always gets me about the first season of Futurama is how slow it is in comparison to the rest of the series. It's especially weird because The Simpsons was at it's fastest when it came out, and Futurama just slowed things right down.

I know I'm in the minority, but I consider the first season of Futurama to be its best.

Man, I don't see that at all. I think the first season is brilliant. I think it's actually one of the most consistent shows season to season that I've ever watched.

Guilty pleasure since the pilot: Worst Week (American version)

I haven't seen the original British series, but this show makes me laugh hard.

Best Pilot:

Angel: City Of... I love the tone it sets. Angel in the bar at the beginning. The way it way it's completely different from Buffy right away(Who had a good pilot too). The great car joke. How Angel doesn't save the girl. "Can you fly?"

Chuck: Fast, fun, and incredibly nerdy. It sets the tone of the show perfectly, mixing the heart and humor perfectly. Zachery Levi hits the ground running.

Reaper: It was never as strong as the pilot(Though I thoroughly enjoy the first season), but Bret Harrison gives a great comedic performance. He has the funniest scream I've heard in awhile. Ray Wise is great. The dynamic of the guys is cool and breezy.

Worst:

X-Files had a pretty weak pilot.

"The Incredible Hulk" 2-hour pilot was released theatrically overseas and is still my favorite approach to the character outside of the comics.

On the other hand, I turned off the pilot to "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" after about 5 minutes.

I had somebody scoff at me recently for praising this. The series itself is justly made fun of for its repetitive nature, but the pilot is really quite good. Once you get past the tragic fashion statements.

Re: Best & Worst TV Pilot

Off hand, I can't think of any bad TV pilots, but I can think of two good ones.

"Get Smart," as it introduced to the world . . .

The Characters
Maxwell Smart as played by Don Adams
Agent 99 as played by Barbara Feldon
The Chief as played by Ed Platt

The Lines
Sorry about that, Chief
Would you believe . . . ?

The Gadgets
The Shoe Telephone

And in an one time appearance
Michael Dunn, as the villain
and rubber banana peels

And "The Wild, Wild West," as it introduced to the world . . .

The Characters
James West as played by Robert Conrad
Artemus Gordon as played by Ross Martin

The disguises

The inventions

The train

And the villains, here played by . . .
Victor Buono and
Nehemiah Persoff
