I don't often blind buy, and for the most part anime's pretty useless to me. But I'm a fanatic about SEVEN SAMURAI, and I know going in that SAMURAI 7 just can't be as good. Nevertheless, I'm grabbing this next week with a Amazon gift certificate and wanted to hear people's takes on this, especially people who've seen the original source.

You'll end up watching to the bitter end and hating yourself for it.

It has its moments, but there are great stretches of boredom, filler, and repetition, and TONS of recycled animations in fight sequences.

But the ideas are interesting enough that you'll likely make it through with a bit of judicious fast forwarding. Then you'll never want to watch it again. Sorry you bought it, a rental would have been better.
