Shane Black breaks my heart, and a woman's face

Thread Starter
I hate it when people I like and admire suddenly turn out to be horrible human beings. Wotta depressing development, really.

Quote:
One of the most famous screenwriters in Hollywood is accused of a campaign of terror and violence against his former girlfriend...the allegations include kicking, punching, choking, crushing and throwing her, and that's just the beginning.

Shane Black, who wrote "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout," and "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," has been sued by Sonya Popovich, who claims among many things, in 2006, a cocaine-fueled Shane put a gun in his mouth, threatened to blow his head off and then pointed it in her direction -- it discharged, hitting a wall.

She also claims he crushed and tried suffocating her during another incident during the same year. She says she was hospitalized for a hairline split in her esophagus that Shane allegedly inflicted. While in the hospital, Popovich alleges he visited her and on one occasion "crawled into [her] bed, removed a vial of cocaine from his pocket, sniffed some cocaine from the vial, and proceeded to masturbate in Plaintiff's hospital bed."

In her lawsuit for assault, battery, and emotional distress filed yesterday in L.A. County Superior Court, Popovich is asking for more than $5 million.
Now, I know there's a fine line between "being accused of" and "actually did these things", but ehn...

Ouch. No wonder Mel doesn't want to do part 5.

That belongs in a script.

I think this was a deleted scene in Stone Cold, with Chains doing the honors.

I hear she has a big pussy...

A big pussy.
Interesting. Looks like there are some real reasons he disappeared from making movies for a while.
This is shitty news. At least he remains more talented than Chris Brown.
I thought he was BACK ON TRACK back in 06. He made Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was fine film. Sure WB dumped it, but that wasn't his fault.
I'll be a hypocrite and remind everyone that nothing has been proven yet. On the other hand if this concerned someone I don't like I'd be calling for his head. C'est la vie.

If we insisted that our artists all be good, decent, unfucked-up human beings, we'd lose out on a lot of great work. It sucks to hear stuff like this, but I'm not going to let it gut my movie collection. I know people who refuse to watch Roman Polanski films, and I keep trying to figure out how they think that's punishing him.

Damn. You got to it first.

Maybe he was chewing on too much tobaccy? Hear it makes one a sexual tyrannosaurus ...

Actually, I kind of insist that people not rape pre-pubescent teens, illegally hire minors for helicopter stunts, beat the shit out of their girlfriends, etc, even if it means they'll be in jail instead of out creating. Don't you?

I think what you meant to say is that: "we shouldn't insist that artists be good, decent, unfucked-up human beings before we can appreciate the art they've already created."

He's been a part of so many movies I adore that I'm willing to give him a mulligan. Besides, there's no more heroes left in the world.
Well, he apparently was no slack jawed faggot.

Strap that on your sore ass, Overlord...

EDIT: God, what is wrong with us? LOL!

Given his writing, does this kind of gossip really surprise anyone? I mean, he often writes crazy, washed-up, dead beat scum bags with complicated, conflicting thoughts about women; often bordering on misogyny. Anyone who read the first draft to The Last Boy Scout or reads into the subtext of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang can see where this kinda shit comes from. It's upsetting but the man is still a hell of a talent and a writer.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

When I first read this post I thought your sig was the next quoted part of the article, which added a new dimension of insanity.

What do you tell a woman with two black eyes?

Nothing, you already told her twice.
*Barely-relevant Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang quote*

*Brief, pious, faux-cutting post from board elder pseudonym about art/artist separation*

*6 pages of other quotes from Monster Squad and whatever the fuck else*
post #21 of 70
You forgot

*"lol women get hit" "lol ya dude"*

Werner Herzog is still my hero...though there hasn't been any Herzog miracles in quite a while.

I've been waiting for this to pop up.
Greg kind of cock-blocked that one, though, minus some piousness and (as ever) plenty thorough.
So hurting your girlfriend enough to put her in the hospital is bad if you're an R&B singer, but just a mulligan if you've written some scripts we like. Got it.
Come the fuck on Dickson. I doubt people are ignoring Black's alleged crimes, but there's a lot of material to make fun off.
Hey now, wait just a damn minute. I've never condemned Chris Brown.
I couldn't care less about the jokes, that's to be expected. It's just that if someone went into the Chris Brown/Rhianna thread and said something like, "Well, I like a lot of his records, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt," they'd get ripped apart.
But that's the problem I have with Chris Brown. I've never heard any of his music so I don't know if I'm fine with it or not.

Off to Itunes...
We as a society are so hypocritical about this stuff that it's kind of fascinating. Ike Turner's obituaries were maybe a couple of sentences that tended to include his sordid past and ignore his contributions to rock n' roll, but you would have to dig deep to find anything about John Lennon beating his first wife, Cynthia. Not pointing fingers, as I also find myself more willing to give Black the benefit of the doubt than Chris Brown, who I only knew from a Double Mint commercial.
Is it just race, or is it that Ike and Brown beat on a famous woman, as opposed to Black having a coke-fueled jack attack on his faceless (to us, not CT chimp-style) victim's hospital bed?
Maybe you better put her on a leash, agent-man!
I hope in his public apology Shane Black says to her, "Sorry I said fuck so much."

Faceless, no more.

Now I fucking HATE him.

Oh yeah, now that I know the girl is attractive it's all much worse.

You know a man of Black's taste doesn't fuck or beat below a 7.*

*That was awful, I feel so ashamed.

I'd wager it's mostly that the women are famous and more beloved than their lovers. There's accusations of a lot of famous men beating their wives/girlfriends, but it kind of tends to get swept under the rug for various reasons.
Doesn't hurt that a picture of Rihanna's beaten face was just leaked to TMZ.

I would clearly masturbate in her hospital bed!

Wait, I think I'm not getting this....

Not to be cruel but could you imagine if he asked:

"Head or gut?"

O/T Didn't Sean Penn beat Madonna's ass back in the 80's? I don't recall him getting much (if any) flack for that?

I don't think anyone is going to make a big deal about what Black did back in '06 and Chris Brown's career will survive with a smaller fanbase.

There's nothing wrong with taking an individual moral stance on something. Yes, you could argue it makes no difference, but if we all thought that way no-one would create. Or protest. Or vote.

That is one stupid extreme.
The other is people who (and this is not specific to the Black case) will defend anything an artist does because they like his art.
It's possible to say "the guy is a great writer, but a total fuckup as a human being".
A lot of great writers, musicians, and painters are people you would not want to have as next door neighbors.
My stance exactly. Many monstrously talented people are also monstrously fucked up. Possibly the majority of them. It's all part of the same glorious package.
