Most recent concert experience

Jeff Beck

I've been waiting fucking ages to see this guy and he didn't disappoint, his current band just simply destroys on stage, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums and Tal Wilkenfold on Bass, I think Jeff over the past few years finally found the sound he was looking for in 'The Jeff Beck Group', Colaiuta was fucking awesome on the drums going from light to heavy with ease, Tal Wilkenfold easily holds her own against Beck and Colaiuta, she got her own moments in the spotlight and got standing ovations for her efforts. Beck was a total fucking rockstar, he played the hell out of that guitar, his encore was just him and his guitar making such beautiful sounds.

John McLaughlin and Chick Corea

Another artist I'd been dying to see for ages was John McLaughlin, him and Corea were backed by the 'Five Peace Band' which included Christian McBride on Bass, Brian Blade on drums (last minute replacement for Vinnie Colaiuta) and Kenny Garrett on Sax, such an awesome experience. They came roaring out of the gate with an uptempo piece (I didn't catch the name) the played a Corea composition called 'The Disguise' which was ok, the band was at it's best when they really brought the energy, the second set kicked off with them playing an acid jazz pocket groove, Kenny Garrett just took off, John tried valiantly but he couldn't match Garrett. Garrett's biggest moment came with his solo during a jam on the Corea piece 'Hymn to Andromeda' he and Blade go full tilt into the land of Coltrane, Garrett kept squeezing every last note out of his instrument to greater and greater heights and with Blade channelling Elvin Jones and McBride on Bass it felt like I was seriously watching the energy of the Coltrane Quartet onstage, it was incredible, everytime I thought Garrett was finished, he just kept going.
For the encore they did a great version of 'Sshhh/It's peaceful' from 'In a silent way'

Saw Ray LaMontagne last night at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. I find his albums very hit and miss but it was a wonderful performance, you have to experience his voice live, he eyes are constantly closed and he just goes hell for leather, full of emotion that you feel run through you which you miss out on with recordings. He was very grateful to the audience but also very shy, really he only interacted with the audience when introducing his band members.

The set list was a nice eclectic mix.One minute you'd be stomping your feet (unfortunately it was all seated) and the next you'd be jaw agape in how raw his voice would be when singing about his love. The crowd were eating it up which always adds to the enjoyment. Had a great time, the Corn Exchange is a great venue.

Priscilla Ahn supported. Stunning voice (reminded me of Aimee Mann and Jenny Lewis) but her song writing is a bit weak relying on "ooh, oohs" and "la,la's" too much. She's only a young lass and was incrediibly cute when giving the backstory to the writing behind her songs. One maybe to keep an eye on.

I got to see Antony and the Johnsons on Tuesday night. Nearly two hours, brilliant voice, and all kinds of funny. If these guys are around and not sold out, go check them out! Also, The Crying Light is exceptional.

Good to hear. My roommate loves Ahn so I'll drag her ass to a concert.

Death Cab For Cutie at St George's Market here in Belfast. Great performance.

Voodoo Fest, New Orleans. Only went one day and saw Nine Inch Nails (awesome, of course), The Mars Volta (great), and Thievery Corporation (really, really good. Much better than their albums).

It's been a long time... I went to Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit last fall.

Cat Power
Death Cab
Wilco
Jack Johnson
Josh Groban
Norah Jones
"Smashing Pumpkins"
Neil Young

Half good, half crap. Neil Young sang Heart of Gold, Unknown Legend, and covered A Day in the Life... so as I left I couldn't help but feel all was well in the end.

Fucked Up at the Middle East.

I went to the record store before the show. Pink Eye and one of the guitarists were there looking at punk 45's. They were such nerds, it was great. I didn't talk to them or anything (I hate doing that) but it was cool seeing them.

They put on a great show, too. Pink Eye jumped up and hung off a pipe at one point and it ripped right off the ceiling. The look on his face was priceless ("oh shit, we're probably going to have to pay for that") and his band mates just shook their heads.

They call them 7"s in punk, not 45's because that's the speed and not the size.

The only thing that matters is if they did the No Warning intro.

Saw Andrew Bird at In the Venue in Salt Lake. One of the best live shows I've ever seen. He was one of the most emotional and engaging performers I've seen live, and his voice is even better live than it is recorded. His use of his loop recorder was genius, and everything he did was passion incarnate. My favorite part: He stopped in the middle of one of his songs and asked a section to slow down, because they were clapping to fast. The absolute amiability of the way in which he did it won the entire audience over.

The band that opened - Loney, Dear - was excellent as well. They started off and it sounded a bit like The Arcade Fire lite but soon came into their own sound and it was quite great. They're from Sweden, apparently. I'd never heard of them before, but I ended up really liking them.

The "Smashing Pumpkins" bit amused me, Cynic. Very apt.

I guess Tati had a great night over there. I listened Radiohead live on stream and that was fantastic. They even played Creep.

Chuck Berry

I was very worried for Chuck's health last night. Thankfully, he's home resting. The show was pretty much a disaster, but I finally saw one of the true kings of rock 'n roll!

Last concert I went to was a threefer featuring Michael McDonald, Bozz Scaggs and The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band. I wanted to die during it.

Next month I'm going to see The Hollies with my mother and a couple of 50-year-old ladies from work! I have the feeling it's going to be a real clambake!
