Christian Filmmakers Creating an Industry of Faith: FROM NPR

http://www.independentchristianfilms.com/

I just heard this story on NPR this morning. I was wondering what the Christian members of CHUD thought about it. Most of me thinks, "Great! They're making their own films instead of criticizing the ones they hate to affect change!" But then another part of me thinks, "Ugh... these films sound terrible."

Can a good amount of genuinely good films (that don't just preach to the choir) come out of this movement? "Good" really only meaning that it can reach a mainstream audience. From the way some of the people in the article talk about films, I can't see it coming about too quickly (the founder of the festival thinks Christians will soon have their own Spielberg). They're too held up on fighting a culture war and pushing their wholesome agenda. I mean, the festival had an award for the film that best explained creationism.

If you can, you should listen to the piece instead as they play some audio clips from some of the films. Pretty cringe-inducing.

Kirk Cameron did the movie for free!!! He's a saint, I tell you!!

From the press release:
Quote:
The top honor in the “Best Feature Film” category was awarded to Fireproof, a film starring Kirk Cameron that explores a firefighter’s struggle to save his failing marriage. Fireproof was the highest-grossing independent film of 2008 with over $33 million in theatre sales, beating out such films as Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (starring Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz), and Milk, starring Sean Penn. The film also received the runner-up nod for “Best of Festival.”
They just loooooove sticking it to those Hollywood-types!

Goddamnit they are so fucking boring and mundane and tiring. But it's not like they'll be bothering me any time soon, aside from the occasional stop a religious group makes at my doorstep. So enh...I just wish their movies were more laughable.

Even though they tend to be working with much greater budgets lately, the Christian film industry still seems stuck in the same cradle it was back in the 70's when Russ Doughten was "poised" to take it into the mainstream with his THIEF IN THE NIGHT tetralogy.

And beyond sizable budgets, as opposed to those earlier efforts, most of the current films are technically well-made. Or at least thoroughly competent. Much worse ends up in heavy rotation on Sci-Fi.

The tendency for the films to sink into proselytizing of one kind or another is what generally damns them. Which is ironic as we're told repeatedly how much of a Christian nation we are.
