Back-Talk (Podcast)

Thread Starter
Greetings!

As I mentioned in Boomstick's thread 'Starting a Podcast', I've recently put together Back-Talk, a podcast of my own with a good friend from university. It's an off-shoot of our blog and came about when we thought about releasing our phone calls as the sort of radio talk-show we toyed around with doing at uni.

My co-host Christophe and myself are into broadly the same movies, music, novels, etc, but our conversations never stay on one subject too long. That sounds like (and is) a lame "trying to get you to listen" style remark, but it's true.

It's a monthly show and we only started in January. The second episode debuted yesterday. We originally had some difficulty with the recording process (I see we're not alone) and, as a result, the first episode is a hard listen. That's what Chris and myself get for living on either side of the Irish Sea! The topics covered, hopefully, make the debut worthwhile. All those problems are gone by Episode Two, though, and I'd love to receive the thoughts of Chewers on our latest endeavour.

If you do oblige us, please start with Episode Two, 'Sex Lives On Audiotape.'

We're also available via iTunes. Just be sure to add that all-important hyphen between Back and Talk, lest you find only Journey and Jimmy Smith. And I really wouldn't be promoting myself shamelessly enough if I didn't mention the podcast's Facebook group too!

Did I mention it's free?

Thanks a million!

Awesome Bobby, I can now push the voice of James Nesbitt out of my head. Great to hear. And if you ever want to hear me sound badly modulated. Check out me calling into Podcaust.

Thanks a million, Ed! Indeed, I will. Incidentally, you're rocketing up the list of potential guests due to the hesitance of others! If you or anyone else wants to send us a question/voice mail message, backtalk.lsfhf@yahoo.com is the address (that's my gratuitous self-promotion done for now.)
That's great although I don't have the capability to leave voice messages in e-mail.

Hmm. Prose would be better than nothing. That goes for everyone! We need your questions. By the way, Ed, your James Nesbitt comment made me laugh.

Ed, your Podcaust appearances confirm my suspicions that, hopefully, you will make an awesome guest. I've not tried Boddington's. However, I believe I must in advance of the proposed episode, so as to legitimize any "Boddington's Vs. Other Beers" discussion.
Well that's nice of you Bobby. See what you think of Boddington's. To me it is great. Of course some individuals (You know from the podcast) say otherwise. I still think being discriminatory against beer in cans is complete nonsense.

But I'll definately try and cook up an e-mail. Just let me know when you need it by.
Boddington's is shit and Hocken sucks. OH MY!

That's right Rob, fuck with the Northern Irish. That's going to go down real well.

I laughed my ass off.

By the way Rob, have you had a chance to listen to Episode 2? I'd love to get the views of one half of the esteemed PodCaust team. Both, actually. To be honest, I'm a little offended you've not threatened to start a "podcast war" with me (like you did with Boomstick.)

And I'm still gonna try Boddintons.
I listened. And I heard an entirely new way to pronounce the word "situation."
I'll queue this up ASAP and comment later.

Thanks, James! I take it that was one of the many phrases I repeated ad nauseam?

Thanks a lot, Boomstick!

Fantastic, relevant references to King of the Hill and The Shape of Things, by the way.

Ta, James! Knowing I connected with someone - if only one - makes it all worthwhile. Seriously.
Yeah, and of course we're commenting on voices and jokes and such, but there was a real discussion here, and that's the important thing for you guys and for the listeners. It's nice to hear some respectful, honorable conservation on this topic, as opposed to the bragging and other nonsense you mentioned. I don't know whether you should care about what some random guy sitting at his computer in Indiana thinks about your show, but there you go.

I heard this Bobby Bear's podcast funds terrorism and child porn.

You want a war? We'll nuke your ass from orbit son.

Believe that.

Rob, do you understand for the love sweet christ what you're doing here. Haven't you seen Patriot Games? These people will not stop! And you're no Jack Ryan.
Shit, you are forever known to our listeners as "The Gaysian" I'm not a feared!

CJ will have a field day with his Irish accent. We'll have to bring Officer O'Malley back. hehe....

Ed's got a point, Rob. We Irish are all smiles and sunshine... to a point.

(Ed, I laughed so hard at you invoking us as an island filled with Terminators, essentially.)
Good luck on that Rob, be sure to check your car regularly. And for the record Northern Irish don't sound like Officer O'Malley. Haven't you watched Jekyll? Or Sunday Bloody Sunday?

And what in hell does "A feared" mean? I mean I know I practice broken English but that's just weird.

James, a response as intelligent as this proves exactly why I care what you think about it. Thanks so much for the feedback!

You're kicking my ass with this stuff, Ed. Seriously.

Joyce, famously, was not a fan of a Northern Irish brogue. Still love him, though.
Well that last one comes from an old SNL skit in which the show has a sketch involving Prime Minister's Questions. Matthew Broderick plays Tony Blair and then Colin Quinn showes up as an MP from Northern Ireland. Quinn asks a question and Broderick shoots in down. Later on Quinn is shown on camera holding a package asking:

"Will the prime minister be taking his usual car this evening?"

*laughs* Oh, that's quality. And also why I wish we could've got SNL here via Sky throughout my childhood.
Well you're actually better off. That was probably one of perhaps five good skits out of that portion of the decade.

Oh, right! I've always been fascinated by SNL in the way that you probably only can be if you've never been able to just turn on the TV and watch a new episode.
I see, but that would lead into a discussion about British comedy shows and I'm hopelessly outgunned on that.

Although I've seen two seasons of a Bit of Fry and Laurie.

And I'm finishing up the podcast now. I'll try and draw up an e-mail response. But I warn you, it could be lengthy and random.

That sounds great! Thanks a lot, Ed. You're guaranteed to have your question/letter acknowledged and answered by two very appreciative fellas, no matter the length/randomness.

I and other trusted sources (Christophe, especially) could recommend you plenty in the way of great British Comedy. You probably know most of 'em, though. '...Fry and Laurie' is one of the essentials checked off the list, anyway.

Gun in mouth vs. ass to mouth?

You guys have serious issues... and I have not laughed as hard in quite a while.

I subcribed to your Podcast, so keep up the good work!

Bobby! When are we getting more podcast goodness?

Hey, Lima! Team Back-Talk has been recording. E.T.A. is, hopefully, very soon. Thanks a million for the very kind interest and your letter; that goes for you too, Ed!
No, problem. I'll also come with something not as dated the next time around. And my apologies for not adding the letter "e" to Christophe's name.
Thread Starter
I'll pass it on. Sure he'll forgive you, Ed. Some interpretations of Chris's name transcend a wayward letter or two.

Outstanding! Thanks so much again to everybody. Remember the look on Cameron's face when he tells Ferris he's gonna stand up to his Dad? That was pretty much me, when I heard we had more than enough (legitimate) letters for a mailbag!

Serious apologies for the delay with this month's episode. To describe the work schedule behind said delay as punishing is barely adequate.

Is the other guy holding it hostage? What's his deal then?
Goddamn Irish bastards. All I'm saying....

Actually the one holding things up is a Brit. The shoe is indeed on the other foot.

Thanks for the correction, Ed! His work commitments have held it up for a month or so, but now he's off the hook. I really hoped it'd be done now (after me thrashing out the structure ages ago) but no dice. Every time we speak, Chris tells me he's gonna finish it on x, y, or z. I now suspect that he is just having fun toying with me. Chris, if you're reading, help a buddy out... please!

Damn, if I knew anything about technology I'd start my own podcast with ya Bobby. I'd call it "The Hocken Report" and we'd bring pop-culture discussion with iron hand in a velvet glove we would.

Outstanding! Love that title. I could present 'The Hocken Report: Laid Bear', a Big Brother's Little Brother style spin-off where a panel reflects on each show.

The times when I've wished I could share the tech duties with Chris have been legion. Thanks for the thoughts and continued support, gents!

Commentating on the commentators. That's some damn brilliance right there!

It's with great, great pleasure that I can now announce the return of Back-Talk!!! "Episode Three: Conflict: Of Interest" is here! The episode description:

"Christophe and Ian follow up last month's sensitive, romantically inclined episode with the conversational equivalent of Kurt Russell. Yes, it's that macho. But there's more to this sprawling opus than just ruminations on schoolyard scraps, The Troubles, and a healthy dose of Eva Green appreciation. Your grateful hosts also discuss Watchmen, answer an unprecedented amount of real mail, and question the relevance of Clint Howard. At Ian's behest, Back-Talk has it's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness."

But that's not all...

"Episode Four: The Quest for Clemency" is ALSO HERE! Why? Well, Back-Talk is now a weekly podcast; after much deliberation, we've decided to give you a little more chat for your goodwill. Gone are the long waits for laboriously edited multiple recordings. In their place will be focused, first-take conversations.

Episode Four's description:

"To atone for Episode Three's delay, here comes a blast of irreverence so sharp it's best served now. Chris and Ian commence their new weekly approach by lamenting the shortcomings of revered Science Fiction franchises, resurrecting a British action bad-ass, and taking the noble dinosaur to strange new places."

Neither episode is up on iTunes yet; we hope they'll surface soon. Once again, thank you for your patience and continued support. Hopefully, this double-feature will go some way to compensating for the work-inflicted delay. Also, the "mailbag" feature is still very much on the agenda; we didn't include it in "Episode Four..." because we wanted to hit the ground running with these two episodes. That and we didn't have any mail left. We need your help to rectify this in future!

It's good to be back! Hope you enjoy.
