Eric Roberts

I'm watching the Independent Spirit Awards, and both Mickey Rourke (winner for best actor) and Alec Baldwin made reference to Hollywood "letting go of whatever Eric Roberts did 15 years ago" and that he should be next in line for a comeback/resurgence. (I agree.) Wikipedia makes reference to drug use and a custody battle, but Google's kind of useless. Is there a particular incident or thing these guys are referring to?

[According to Aronofsky, we have Rachel Weisz to thank for The Wrestler (which won Best Picture at the Spirit Awards).]

Jeez, I thought this thread was going to be a story about how Eric Roberts beat a hooker while snorting blow off her ass fifteen years ago. Seems like all we get these days is celebrity beatings.

I'd like to go back to the late 80s/early 90s where Eric was the bigger star than his little sister. What a bizarre time that must've been looking back. Most people now don't even know Julia HAS an older brother (or know that was him in Dark Knight).

15 years ago. It's time to let go and forgive, Hollywood.

I saw the ceremony and don't think Rourke was ref a specific incident as he said 15-20 years ago. It's just been forever since he did, was given anything worht a damn.

And Baldwin was just joking around about what Rourke said.

Hell, Eric's daughter Emma is probably better known then he is.
I think Robert's downfall is due less to his wild life style then a bunch of crappy script choices. He never was as publically fucked up the way that Robert Downey was.

If you watched the end of the show, when everyone was standing up and leaving, Roberts came on to Baldwin and started hugging him and touching his face. It was amazing.

"They took my thumb!"

I got a lotta love for The Pope of Greenwich Village.

I like the fact that the pic on the left hand is from a completely different movie.

...and yet I enjoy his performance in Best Of The Best more than any singel performance his li'l sis has given, ever.

I remember the first time I saw Eric Roberts-- it was in King of the Gypsies back in 1978. I remember loathing Julie Roberts on sight in the first movie I saw her in --Steel Magnolias .Some people question my loathing for Julia. Not me --I'll take Eric any day over Julia.

Might be easy for Hollywood to forgive, but what about me? I actually watched the damn thing.

Eric's main problems were drugs and not doing a very good job of capitalizing on the Oscar nomination he got relatively early in his career. But aside from that I've always felt that his sister becoming (ugh) America's sweetheart while at the same time avoiding any discussion of her brother created this aura around Eric that he must have been an awful human being. Most of the roles he played in the 90's were as awful human beings (save for Alex Grady!) which only backed up that perception of him.

The combination of poor choices, erratic behavior, a reputation of being difficult with directors, and Julia's dismissiveness (sad and unfair, since he gave her a break in one of his movies) led to, if not a blackballing, a fall from grace.

All that said, I just wanted to mention how awesome he was in Pope, Runaway Train, and The Coca-Cola Kid.

Also, he's scary-good in the uncomfortable and brilliant Star 80. So sweaty, pathetic, and sleazy.

I think he did a solid supporting turn in The Dark Knight. Loved when he called The Joker a "nobody" in the sitdown. I even felt that Maroni was kinda sympathetic due to Roberts' performance.

Aside from Teri Hatcher in her Lois and Clark heyday being nude, he's the main highlight in Heaven's Prisoners.

Apparently they were estranged due to Julia siding with Erics ex in his custody battle over Emma when she was little...

After his performance in "The Pope of Greenwich Village" Roberts should have been let go over a very, very deep hole.
