This one I'm pretty sure nobody here has seen, unless they're from Brazil, but it's easily worth pointing out. It's Fernando Meirelles's first true feature film, and one that's flawed because it missed out (as I've read elsewhere) on a great chance to point out a problem with the class system in Brazil, primarily the large gap between lower and upper class. Instead it's a decently entertaining film shot in a way that was clearly made to attract western attention. Didn't work very well, but then came Cidade de Deus.
The problems here are purely story based, but thankfully Meirelles's directing potential shines here, as do the performances, which are spread out, yet all very good and authentic, if you will.
It's definitely worth checking out if you are like me and have to see everything by the directors you like, and even if you're not, this is still a fun film that basically anyone could enjoy. It's a story that could have easily been very sad but is told in a very optimistic way. The soundtrack is phenomenal as well.
