Improving Credit Rating

I suppose this is the most appropriate forum to post this...

I was recently approved for a mortgage, but at the last minute the mortgage company changed their lending policies, and my financing disappeared. My credit rating is a 593 with Transunion and 580+ with the other two credit bureaus. In order to get my financing back I need a 600. So close.

Right now the only credit I have is my car note. No credit cards or anything like that. I am going to try and talk with my credit union today about getting a card, and using it for gas/groceries, and paying it off at the end of every month. My question is, what is the best way to use the card in order to bump my score? I would like to get 20-30 points by August (earlier if at all possible) so I can start house hunting again. Any other suggestions to bump my score as quick as possible?
