Party Down

Did a search but couldn't find a thread. New Rob Thomas show (Veronica Mars, not Matchbox 20) coming up on Starz, written/showrun by John Enbom (Veronica Mars), with Dan Etheridge (Veronica Mars) and Paul Rudd (Veronica Mars, everything else).

"Party Down follows a Los Angeles catering team, a sextet of Hollywood wannabes stuck working for tips while hoping for their "big break." Each episode of this half-hour comedy finds the hapless catering team working a new event, and inevitably getting tangled up with the colorful guests and their absurd lives."

Starring Ken Marino (Veronica Mars), Adam Scott (Veronica Mars, Step Brothers, Knocked Up), Jane Lynch (Veronica Mars, everything else), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, Knocked Up), Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars), Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield), and Eden Sher (Weeds).

Guest stars include Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars), Jason Dohring (Veronica Mars), Alona Tal (Veronica Mars), James Jordan (Veronica Mars), Ed Begley Jr (Veronica Mars, everything else), Martin Yu (Veronica Mars), and Kristen Bell (THE Veronica Mars).

Yeah, so this is great

Just caught up on the second episode of this last night. I thought the first episode was good, but this one had me in fits of laughter. I will never be able to look at Ken Marino again without seeing him burning an American Flag in front of a bunch of young Conservatives.

Also: "Why the fuck am I in a Super Crackers?"
Yeah, I love this show.
I just caught the first three episodes, really funny stuff.
Just got caught up on this great show and am wondering why it seems to be flying so low under the radar. I get that not everyone has Starz, but considering all the hilarious, Apatow/Wain-friendly talent involved, you'd think the buzz would be a little stronger.

I do think the show shares some slight similarities with The Office (US), especially in regards to Ken Marino's high strung, dimwitted boss man. But Marino plays pathetic really well, and in just a few episodes takes it to some pretty dark places. The entire case rocks, but Marino and Martin Starr as Roman might be the standouts for me.
In case anyone missed it, starz ordered a second season, according to E!

I love this show, have been watching since episode one, last two episodes had some serious character developments, and the last episode with steven webber made me laugh really hard.

The whole cast is great, and has a sort of instant, unique chemistry that doesnt usually come at all, let alone so soon.

And I never noticed the similarity between marino and carrels boss characters, and although I'll acknowledge it, I think the difference in jobs and surroundings alone makes for a very different vibe.

And in a lot of ways, the "inept and constantly undermined boss" has been a character thats been around for a long time, and often for comedic stories.

I really enjoy this one, and hopes it catches on a bit more... at least as much as a starz original show can....

P.S. I love the pseudo wind-up that the main character does before delivering the "Are we having fun yet?" line ... his mouth specifically....
I can't get enough of Marino's exasperated delivery of the lines "Nooo..." or "Lie..."
yeah definitely

"... Lie" is particularly hilarious ... did he do it more than the one time Im remembering from the last episode?
I think the "Lie" line was only delivered once, but he's done "No..." a couple of times and it's glorious. Every. Single. Time.
I think this show is more similar to the original Office than the US version is. In terms of it's characters at least. Marino is a much more believable fuck up than Carrell is, and he does it all without being generally obnoxious. I think Roman highlights it best, it's scary how well done that character is. He's the one that insists he's the smartest guy in the room and can't understand why no one likes him.

I too love that little wind up that Henry has to do. It's like saying that catchphrase physically pains him, which made the last episode that much funnier.

It's sad that Jayne Lynch won't be in Season 2 (And isn't in the final 2 episodes of this season cos of some Fox show she's on) but Jennifer Coolidge is replacing her, so it's not all bad news.
I don't know if anyone has seen the James Rolf High School Twentieth Reunion episode, but god damn, it was pretty great.

Coolidge works and if your a fan of Joe Lo Truglio then the bathroom scene is a must-see.
Can I just say that I am completely in love with Lizzy Caplan? "Yes, it's food."

Love this show.
Damn great show. Enjoying the hell out of it.

I will also restate what someone else said: it's available via Netflix Instant View and the put the new ep Friday morning. It's nice of them because the show if very funny.

I would quote some J.K. Simmons junk right now, but it's too awesome. It should just be experienced.
I will kill you. Like man. With hands.
I binged on all 9 episodes of this show Friday Night and Saturday morning after Adam Scott was on Adam Carolla's podcast. This show is great. I must spread the word about this one.
So now that's its finished the first season, any thoughts? Kristen Bell was great "I like art movies, nothing too depressing like that Holocaust shit".
Just finished the season on Netflix. God, what a great show. Why the hell isn't this a huge hit?
I don't know which episode is my favorite but the James Rolf High School Twentieth Reunion episode stands out. After all the shit that happens to Marino, you really don't want him to fuck up...but that vomit scene. Perfectly sad and hilarious at the same time.
Every episode is just packed with greatness.
This show really is great. A totally pleasant surprise - though it shouldn't be surprising considering all the talent involved, it's just weird to be able to put "Starz" and "great original series" in the same sentence. And that's why it's not a huge hit, too. It would be better off on HBO or Showtime in that regard. But it's so good I think at least a cult following is guaranteed. Also I think I read somewhere that it's coming back for a second season, though now I'm not sure where I heard that or if it was definitely confirmed or just speculation. They did an awesome job building up the characters and over-arcing plot, even after just watching the season once in a quick span I'm very invested in it and excited to see where it goes from here.
It's confirmed. Only Jane Lynch might not return because of her Glee commitments.

Because it's on Starz. It's a very funny show, more people shoudl be taking advantage of the Netflix Watch It Now dealie.

That's a shame, but I suppose Jennifer Coolidge is an acceptable substitute.

Awesome news that it's definitely coming back though. They set up some very interesting possibilities for next season.

Yeah, that's cool. More networks should do that.
I didn't even really realize that it was on Starz. I think if I were to tell my friends that, a good number of them wouldn't even know Starz is a channel. But good for them for renewing the show.
And how great is it to see Martin Starr in a good role again. After Freaks and Geeks, I'd watch pretty much anything he's in.
Damn, that was a hilarious show. Nice to know it's coming back.
I've only just started on it, but I love it already. What a fantastic cast. I would watch anything that starred even one of these actors. Great show.
Kyle, the blonde guy, looks like a cross between Trey Parker and Matthew McConaughey.... good show...reminds me of Community for some reason.

I've seen the first 2 eps of season 2, still brilliant.

The first has a quite brilliant guest turn from Jimmi Simpson, who some of you guys will know from It's Always Sunny and the last 2 Psych finales. It's definitely the stronger of the 2 eps.

How's Megan Mullally as a replacement for Jane Lynch? She's the one thing I'm most worried about.

It's a shame the odds are so good this won't go beyond a second season, what with Adam Scott leaving for Parks & Rec.

Mullally is good. The character is quite low key, so she doesn't take anything away from the rest of the cast, and she has a few laugh out loud lines. If anyone was worried she'd be Karen Walker again, she's not.

She's no Lynch, but she's doing fine.
That's good to hear. I'm really excited for this season. If I had to make a list of the top ten episodes of comedy from the last decade, it would be quite a fight not to put the porn convention one or the mob one from last season on it. The mob one is so good it's unbelievable.

Better than Veronica Mars.
Steven Weber as Rick Sargulesh: best one-off guest star of all time?
Man, I hope Scott juggles both shows. Don't know how possible that would be.
Caught up with this show recently thanks to Starz On Demand. Really sneaky, really swell show.

Two episodes of the new season are on demand right now, the first, and then inexplicable the fifth. Both are pretty great, though. I sure do miss Constance Carmel, but I guess Glee's a hit. Megan Mullaly is more annoying than funny, but I've always felt that way about her. Although I think her character is supposed to work the nerves, so maybe I'll get used to it.

The first episode has Jimi Simpson as a Marilyn Manson clone called Jackal Onassis, and he has a good bit switching roles with Roman, because he's tired of all the fame and sex with supermodels. He just wants to be a regular guy. Henry is the team leader now.

Second episode has the crew catering a very private party at Steve Guttenberg's house. Hilarity ensues. Lizzy Caplan is fucking hotter than the sun.
For those of us without Starz, looks like it'll be available on Netflix Instant Watch concurrently with broadcast/On Demand. First episode is already up!

"You're going to think about this tonight and jack off."

"Giving a satanist a four sided sandwich is like giving Golda Meir a baked ham."

SO HAPPY IT'S BACK.
Why isn't Martin Starr in every movie?
I liked mullaly ... I am tired of jane lynchs schtick ... was funny in best in show, and even the next 1000 times I saw her essentially play that same character... not so much anymore.

Mullally was just so weird and off kilter, she blew past both the other weird chick characters IMO.

Loved the rock stars switch, kind of wished that guy had stayed on for more eps, he was the best part about the first episode, IMO.... the whole "real life" thing reminded me a bit of last seasons episode where they went on about "ordinary fucking people".

Also loved seeing jk simmons again... he was fucking hilarious last season on that episode and was pretty good in this one too: "you'll never work in this town again", ".... okay."

"i trust your nipples more than any focus group".
Wife was creeped out that I recognized Jimmi Simpson under the rock star makeup. Love that guy.

Strong return.
Martin Starr's monologue to Kyle was pretty amazing.

"What the fuck do people in Idaho do during the summer? Wait for the Rapture?"
I'm the only one watching this, huh?

Wasn't crazy about last night's episode but that's because I thought the first two were so strong. The whole B-story about Kyle was a nice turn for that character, especially since he's probably the least nuanced character of the bunch. I also liked his moment with Roman in the room.
I love The Office(british). I love Veronica Mars. I love Freaks and Geeks. I love Martin Starr. I love Paul Rudd. I love Christopher Guest. I love Jane Lynch. I love Curb Your Enthusiasm.

So why don't I find this show funny or likable at all?

I really don't understand it. I watched the first two episodes of the first season. I find it so incredibly forced, no subtlety whatsoever. Each character is forced into their niche, like Lizzy Caplan and Adam Scott for instance. Unrequited love arc, Tim and Dawn, Jim and Pam, I've seen this far too many times! I laughed a handful of times in the episodes. I felt the entire second episode had such a telegraphed setup, as soon as the flag was introduced, every subsequent joke could be seen a mile away.

I really want to like this show. I'll probably end up powering through some more on Netfllix just to see if it clicks at some point.

How can the sum of all these awesome parts equal nothing for me?
I still like it but this season seems a little off.

But Scott's and Caplan's 'love' is anything but unrequited. It has been requited. A lot.

I think the first 2 episodes are amongst the weakest, and if you continue through a couple more your mind might be changed.

For instance, Casey and Henry have sex in episode 3, so there's none of that "will they wont they" shit.
I don't particularly agree that this season has been 'off', but tonight's episode, James Ellison Funeral, is probably the best yet of this show. Really. It's damn near perfect.

Ken Marino really shines here.

May I be allowed to act like a sexist pig for while?

I'd fucking fight crocodiles bare handed so I could get into a jacuzzi with Lizzy Caplan. Damn!

I just had to get that out of my system.

I'm right there with you brother. Not in the jacuzzi though.

Also, the girl that played the "robot" was hot. And there was something about her robot voice that was really weirdly sexy.
