Depeche Mode - "Wrong"

Any Depeche Mode fans around here? I can't recall any recent dedicated discussion of the band on this forum, so with the new album around the corner, I figured now's as good a time to start as any.

The new single, "Wrong."

http://idolator.com/5159461/depeche-...s-right-freaky

I outright hated this song at first, but it's absolutely insidious. It's been stuck in my head all day, and the video is good, dark times indeed. Excitement building...

Music for the Masses is probably my fave of theirs, with Violator right behind it.

Not feelin' the new tune. Catchy, though.

Agreed. Those two were an incredible 1-2 punch for a burgeoning alterna-teen.

That video is great. Nice song, too.

I'm seeing them live in May.

They're a great live act.

I'm with Ray as far as album goes, and I'd follow Music and Violator with Black Celebration and Songs of Faith and Devotion, most likely their most underrated. And I really liked the last album, unlike Exciter, so I'm really opened to the new stuff.

Playing the Angel was fantastic although I tried listening to Black Celebration, didn't care for it. Of course not liking Violator could get you deported around here.

'Playing the Angel' was easily one of their best albums, right up there with 'Violator' in my opinion. I'll definitely give the new one a shot.
The video was much better than the song. I am jaded, though. I much prefer their earlier stuff.
I actually really liked both video and song.

Now that I think of it, Playing the Angel is one of their good album. I just finished listening to it and it's right there with Violator, Music for the Masses and Black Celebration.

I love Depeche Mode. My biggest issue with them is they usually release an album that is 3/4 amazing, and 1/4 embarassing. I believe that Violator is as good as it is, because it only has 9 songs. If they had 3 more, you know they would probably be kind of cheesy.

Take Playing the Angel, for example. There are some seriously awesome tracks, definitely their best set of songs in a long while. Some of the best songs would be "A Pain That I'm Used To", "Suffer Well", "Nothings Impossible" almost the whole CD, but then you've got crimes against humanity like "Macro" and "Damaged People", that are so bad that they make you cringe, at least for me.

Not sure if it is just Martin Gore indulging himself, but some of their tracks should be relegated to B-sides. That being said, they were the second band I ever saw live, and I still am a big fan.

I've already seen them twice. The first time (1998) they were very mediocre but Gahan was still recovering from his heroin addiction. The second time (2006), they were fantastic.

Playing the Angel was definitely a pretty solid record.

I never quite got why people thought Playing The Angel was the best anything, either the best since this or that or the other thing. It's consistent, and immediate, but it doesn't quite cross the threshold into really good DM status. There's nothing on there I would put on a DM mix or rank among my favorites.

Exciter, now there is an underrated album. It's OK, I know, I'm the only one who thinks so. Bu noone can deny the power of Freelove. No hidden catch, no strings attached. Just Freelove.

Ultra, the first album of their post-death, "mature" period, annihilates Exciter and PTA, though. There are a few dull ones on the second half, but it has Barrel Of A Gun, Useless, Home (Gore giving himself one of the best ones for once), It's No Good, and Sister Of Night.

Songs of Faith and Devotion remains my #1, always. When a singer does exactly the right amount of drugs at exactly the right time, it's a beautiful thing. Dave even posed with a guitar in the booklet photos, when he's never played one as far as I know. You can't help but love that.It also helps that Martin Gore is one of the best pop songwriters in music history.

Violator is great too, maybe my #2 or #3. MftM has some classics, but I'd prefer just watching the 101 movie again to actually listening to the album. It's just slightly lacking. Black Celebration is their breakthrough as far as songwriting goes, I need to reevaluate that one. I also need to reevaluate the one before that, but I remember it having some slammin tunes. Construction, I wouldn't bother unless you are uber hardcore or interested in the history of early 80s sampling. Broken Frame, never heard it. The first one has like 2 good songs. They took a while to get going, didn't they?

This year will be my first time seeing them live, which is a big thing for me, since I have all 4 live DVDs. Boston, July 31st, be there!

I shall make my thoughts on the new songs known once I get home.

Great to see other fans on the forum with different takes on the band's past work.

As for their finest hour, I've got to go for Songs of Faith and Devotion. I love the alternative influence, the gigantic and complex sound, and the unusually strained David Gahan vocals. The album was probably the worst time in the band's career, but for me, an incredible piece of work emerged from the turmoil.

Then there's Black Celebration and Violator, which live up to the hype considerably. Love 'em both, particularly BC in all of its nihilistic glory. Music for the Masses... eh, I could never really get into it beyond the first few tracks, which are indeed wonderful. And as for Playing the Angel, it's fairly consistent and well-written, save for the tracks that RCA mentioned. I literally cracked up the first time I heard "Damaged People," and I still can't believe Gore sung it without doing the same.

And Reese - Exciter is definitely underrated. Without it, we'd never have gotten Dream On, so I'm glad the album exists.

While that may have been the longest hill in existence. That was still a great video.

I adore the production work on Ultra. 'Barrel Of A Gun' is one of their best songs. That thumping bass-line is delicious.

'Dream On' was probably my fave single in 2001.

I only saw them for the Playing the Angel tour. I actually heard the same thing about what I think was the same tour you saw first. Gahan's only flaw live is the abuse of the word "Ahhhhhhh yeaaaaaah", which he yells like a thousand times in an evening.

Still was a fantastic show, even more so as I saw them in a private suite with an unlimited amount of booze.

This makes me chuckle, because I can now hear him saying that and "Everything Counts" kicking in. And then I hear him say it again and "Never Let Me Down Again" kicks in...

I've had the pleasure of seeing them six times. Violator tour was my first "solo" concert with friends. I'm still bitter that my parents wouldn't let me see the Masses tour because I was "too young".

The video is creeeeeeeeeepy. The song, the first couple of times I heard it, didn't do much for me - I think those "WRONGS!" in the beginning are part of the problem. But, I'm renting a vehicle while my car is in the shop, and the "alternative" station was programmed in and I heard it while driving around yesterday. Enjoyed it much more, once we moved past those opening "wrongs". Enough so that I'm really starting to get excited about hearing the rest of the album.

Also, just as an aside, I really appreciate that Mode, for the most part, tries to create interesting videos. Halo is still one of my all time favorite vids...

Since you saw the same tour I did. Did Gahan deep throat the mike? I was up about nine miles into the rafters but I believe that's what I saw.

I think that's what he did, but I wasn't paying attention to that. However, the wife did.

Yes, the mic/mic stand is a very important part of Mr. Gahan's repertoire and they bring a lot of people a lot of... ahem, joy.

Are you trying to suggest that Mr. Gahan is GAY???
The more I hear WRONG the more I like it.

By the way, whoever post the image of Kevin Spacey's Luthor gets punched in the face.

Nice premptive move there.

Cool song and video! Dave sounds pumped on the vocals.
Album rules, IMO. It's not as good as Ultra, or Violator, but maybe better than PtA
post #29 of 31
I'm digging it. It's more subdued than Playing the Angel, not as noisy. In Chains, Fragile Tension, In Sympathy and Come Back are the bright spots for me. I'm seeing them in August at the Borgata in NJ (saw them there for PtA a few years ago, and they were fantastic). I see they made Peace the second single... hmm, that song kind of sucks. The only song that's worse on the new album is the dreaded Jezebel.

I'm glad to see that Gahan is okay and the tour is back on.
Yeah. Not as great as Playing the Angel, nor as easily accessible, but it's definitely a grower.

The last album I bought was Music for the Masses. Just got tired of them, and stop listening to them after that.
