That.
Assuming it's even a thinly veiled reference to Obama makes the "joke" a failure UNLESS it was wholly intentional and "no Easter egg hunt" worthy (though it still wouldn't make sense). I get that people can read things into pretty much whatever they want, and thus I agree that the cartoon COULD be interpreted that way, but I'd like to think that's just people jumping to conclusions based on the sheer audacity of bigotry throughout history. Because of this eventuality, someone should have caught it before print. I'm not arguing otherwise; better to err on the side of sensitivity if you think a misinterpretation will be common. But if one were to imagine, say, an alternate universe where Gore is Head of State and events colluded to produce a similar stimulus plan, it would be the same cartoon. Dead chimp ≠ President.
THAT SAID, I am discussing this within the context that I have seen it, and reading about how "With the support of the editor in chief, the cartoonist Sean Delonas has published numerous vile cartoons tinged with racism", and that the cartoon "was juxtaposed to a photo of President Obama" is, if true, absolutely indicative of condemnable intent and I don't think I want to be on the side that appears to be defending such a rhetoric-infused piece of shit cartoon anyway.
Also: Is there not a discussion on the boards about this cartoon elsewhere already? Or is this awesomely appropriate thread title a catch-all for the glut of intolerance that seems to be bubbling to the surface?
