New Wilco in June

Hey, Wilco's back! We already knew that their Ashes of American Flags live DVD would come out in April and that indie retailers would get it early as part of the Record Store Day festivities. And we knew that the band had a bunch of tour dates coming up, including a pretty extensive road trip in and around Spain. And now we can also report that Wilco have a new album coming out soon!

As Rolling Stone has reported and the band's publicist has confirmed, the new Wilco album will be out in June. It doesn't have an album title yet, but we do know a few of the song titles: "Wilco, the Song" (which the band played on "The Colbert Report" last year), "Deeper Down", "My Country Has Disappeared", "Sunny Feeling", and "One Wing". According to Rolling Stone, the band recorded most of the album last month in New Zealand, when four members travelled to help out on a forthcoming Neil Finn charity album. Frequent Wilco mixing engineer Jim Scott serves as producer.
I've got tickets to see them in Knoxville in April. Can't wait to see how much of the new material they roll out.

I'm probably anticipating the new Wilco more than any other new release this year (unless Dylan puts out a new one). From what I've read the new album is more of a polished production than Sky Blue Sky, but not as overdubbed with distortion as Foxtrot.

They've got a great track record of playing unreleased material in concert, Matt, so you shoud get a nice preview.

Richason--new Dylan album in April or May.

New Wilco = good news.

Excellent news. Thanks for confirming. (I'd heard rumors, but nothing solid.)
First I'd heard about a new Dylan or a new Wilco. Nice.

Great news.

Full album is streaming at the band's site.

http://beta.wilcoworld.net/records/thealbum/index.php

First impressions: It's tighter and a little less jammy than Sky Blue Sky. Almost a melding of that album and Summerteeth.
I'm going to see them in July, can't wait, my 2nd most anticipated show of the summer after the Jayhawks/Hold Steady weekend in Minneapolis at the Basilica Block Party.
I'm trying my best to resist the album. Secretly, I hope it leaks online and causes them to release the album before June 30.

I'm seeing them June 23rd at The Wiltern. Promises to be amazing.
It did leak online. That's why they started streaming it on their site today.

Exxxxxxcellent. All is going according to plan then...

I'm checking it out now on the stream at their site, and I have to agree with the part about it being tighter. While I did like Sky Blue Sky, as I do all Wilco albume, it was a tad bit loose, and a little too...airy (if that's the right term.) SBS needed a few more beats-per-minute IMO. This new album will be a no brainer purchase when it comes out.
I'm hearing really positive things so far. I couldn't bring myself to listen to it so I had my brother give it a spin and he said the song "I'll Fight" is genius. I can't wait to see if he's right or not (he probably is).
Heard it, and didn't dislike it, but was just indifferent, which might be even worse for a band like Wilco. And I *loved* the past three albums. Seems to be Wilco-by-the-numbers here (which might be why they self-titled the album as well as a song), nothing that really grabs me from the first, like for example the twin guitar outro on 'Impossible Germany' did. Decent songwriting, but I expect more than decent from Tweedy at this point.

Great album cover though.

Their first three albums are being re-released on Vinyl in early June. This is a pretty big deal considering that Summerteeth is like the holy grail of modern records. Hard to find and it's supposed to sound incredible.

SooooOOoooo... WILCO is coming to MASS MOCA this summer, and tickets are 100$. They are coming here because one of their spouses is from North Adams Mass. It's going to be this big crazy thing and all the hotels are sold out.

However... I've never heard their music, and I've never been to a non classical music concert specifically to hear music (I've been to events where music was playing, but it wasn't the specific reason I was going to that event).

Should I go to this concert? I'd appreciate some CHUD-vice on the matter
post #18 of 39
Wilco is awesome. Go to the show.
Wilco live is pretty awe-inspiring.
Is there any sort of social reason to go? Will I be proving my coolness by attending? Will it be fun and crazy? Because honestly I don't really like music that much, and I won't spend 100 dollars to listen to something that I can hear on a CD from the comfort of my own home.

Would a WILCO concert be fun like Bonnaroo, or are you guys suggesting I go because you think their music is good?

What a cruelly deceiving thread to bump!
Kate, I would suggest listening to some of their music and then deciding whether you want to shell out a hundred bucks rather than asking fans of the band (pretty much the only reason you'd be posting in here) whether or not someone who's never heard them before thinks you should.

I think they're playing in June, and I didn't want to start a new thread just for my question

I'm not sure what advice you're looking for if you don't like music. The band doesn't seem to enter into the equation. Are there other things at the festival that are worth $100 to you? Because Wilco will be... playing music. Which you don't like. So.

I am not really asking for an appraisal of their music so much as an apprasial of their concerts. I want to know if it would be fun in a social context. I've heard tales of concert craziness and would like to perhaps experience it for myself some day

Thanks for the help anyway though

EDIT: A link for those who might want tickets

EDIT 2: By way of further explanation, a bunch of my friends just graduated college and left the area so I'm looking for fun social events that I can attend without having to know people

One of my co-workers is friends with the lead singer of Avi Buffalo, and apparently they both got to hang out with Nels Cline at his house in Glendale last Saturday (Nels Cline has apparently been mentoring Avi a little). Jealous as hell.

If you're just wanting to sample the concert-going experience and don't really like music (?), maybe try a cheaper one for your first time out.

PS: You're welcome, Massachusetts Wilco fans.

Typically, going to a rock n'roll show does count as typical fun social behavior.

But you go and hate the music and don't know anybody, there's a good chance you could have a miserable time.

They're a good band, though, and they have an excellent live reputation. This is still a decision best left up to you.
Okay, so...You aren't a big music fan, and live music isn't something you are familiar with (having never attended a live gig before). All of your friends abandoned you, and you are looking for a "fun, social experience where you don't particularly need to know anyone".

And you are asking us if you should drop a C note for a ticket to a Wilco concert.

I have all the information correct, yes?

Sounds like good advice, this is just sort of the biggest concert thing around here since Bob Dylan was in Pittsfield so I don't want to skip it in case it turned out to be epic. I'm weighing my options and I figured CHUD might have good advice

Thanks for the advice, Parker. Sounds logical and I'll keep it in mind as I enter into final deliberations

No. I've been in the presence of Live Music before

But...you don't like music. Even if it was "epic," you wouldn't know or care.

Similarly, I imagine that it's possible to describe a D&D game as "epic," but if I was sitting in the room for both a run-of-the-mill game and an epic one, I wouldn't know the difference.
I'm still getting around to the concept of someone 'not liking music'. Not 'disliking a kind of music', just not caring for the artform in general.
But yeah, if any band can convert you Kate, it's gotta be Wilco. If your soul is not touched at least once during their show, this music thing is probably not for you. 100 dollar to find out is probably a bit steep though.
Oh, and don't go because it's the cool thing to do. Hanging around at a festival can be fun & the atmosphere might even get you to loosen up, but the music should be your primary reason for going.

I don't dislike music. I'm not adverse to tones and melody. I just don't spend my time sitting around listening to albums. I'm a movie person

Fair enough, Cheftournel. You make good points, and I'll have to consider them. 100 dollars is more than 2/3rds of a weekly pay check for me, and I am already owing money to my parents like crazy, so I will have to think about it.

This sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Wilco isn't Phish. Their concerts are not a social event. If you aren't already very familiar with their music, and invested in it, and anticipate seeing it performed live, you will probably be bored shitless.

Thanks for the opinion, Kyle. I've been really wrestling with this the past few days. It's going to be such a huge event, but I can't really muster enthusiasm for it. I don't want to miss out on something fun, but I don't think I really want to go either. I've got to think it over

I don;t really get this. I know of a few people who went to see Wilco with little knowledge of them and had a great time. I don't know why you have to be a fan of them to enjoy their concerts.

No, but you have to kind of be a fan of concerts to enjoy concerts.

That being said, there was a girl next to me and my wife at the New Pornographers show on Friday night who was by herself, and she seemed to have a hell of a time.
Don't go. I took a girlfriend who isn't into music (other than terrible music, which she quite likes) to a Wilco show after she said she liked an album of theirs I was playing, and while I thought it was great even from the crappy seats we had, it meant nothing to her. She didn't hate it, it was just enh. And we didn't pay anywhere close to $100.
Well, as I understand it (cause I couldn't understand the high price tag either) this is a festival, even going on for a couple of days. The program features quite some good music, as well as comedy and theater.
Soooo I guess Kate, if you enjoy some culture you should enjoy this. If you're looking for a boozefest where you can shout along with the songs being played, look elsewehre.
