New album June 2nd. Discuss.

I'll be getting it. One of my favorite Bands.

No gravedigger comment? Fail.

I can't wait, plus I've got their 2-night Charlottesville stint in April to hold me over.

I'm torn between being a hipster d-bag and hating him for being embraced by bro-culture, and knowing that this dude's pretty talented and a pretty damn good musician. Help me.
Embrace him.

I'm very interested in hearing the music post LeRoy. How much of an effect if any will his death have in the band.

I just watched a concert in Atlanta on some random HD channel at a friend's house. I've never seen so much white.

I've been disappointed with their last few albums overall, but even bad DMB ain't that bad.

Well, he's the Groo Grux King in the title. So at least that much.
Where'd you hear that, Tomas? About Roi being the Groogrux King?

I think the title is ridiculous but I'll still be preordering it through the Warehouse. I figure if anything is going to change, it's that the sax parts will be more aggressive. Jeff Coffin has quite a different style than Roi.

If you guys haven't heard it, I'd suggest grabbing the 8.19.08 show they played on the day Roi died. It's incredibly strong, opening with the best rendition of Bartender I've heard. They really channeled their feelings into the music.

Some website. Like, they recorded it in New Orleans (Big Whiskey) and Le Roi is the other part, so.

ETA :

I got it from the DMB mail list. Here's what it said last night. Aside from the above info.

"…still here dancing with the Groo Grux King. We’ll be drinking big whiskey while we dance and sing."

Fuck the title, it's a pretty cool tribute to their former band member.

This is so true. Run and find yourself this concert if you haven't heard it, it's incredible. I saw DMB last July 12, just a few days after LeRoi had his accident. At that point, I had no clue why he wasn't there, but with Jeff Coffin tearing things up, and Tim Reynolds having been added as a full-time member, I didn't think much of LeRoi's absence.

Something amazing I read recently:

'July 1, 2008 in Charlotte, North Carolina marked the first time a band member has missed a show since 1993, two years after the band was formed.'

On topic, I can't wait for the new CD.

I just noticed they pushed the release date back a month. This was supposed to hit at the end of April, dammit!

Anyway, they revamped the official site today. It's okay but the big addition, I think, is the addition of a buttload of really old photos of the band by Danny Clinch. Some of these date back to what must have been promo shoots for Under the Table. Stefan looks like he's still in high school.

Track names released so far:

Lying In The Hands Of God
Dive In
Squirm
Shake Me Like A Monkey
Spaceman
Time Bomb
Funny The Way It Is (first single, due around 4/9)
Why I Am
Still with the monkey analogy. And, oh shit, they brought in the brass. Hopefully that's the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. They are in NOLA, after all.

late eta: it occurred to me this morning that they must have brought Rashawn Ross into the studio with them and that's who's on the brass. This is a good thing.

Album art. I like it. It's no BTCS or Crash, but it's nice.

Also, Billboard has an interview and preview video up. The video has some new audio in it, different from the video on dmband.com with the spazzy douchebag. "Sister" must have been reworked into a new song?

You're telling me you don't like the "Saggy Tits Chick?"

Fuck You!

But at least it's no Everyday or Stand Up, which had awful covers.

You can download the new single "Funny The Way It Is" for free:

Haven't listened to it yet myself, but I'm about to hit play...

Thanks for that

Same old-new DMB.

Yeah, i was a little underwhelmed at first, but it ends quite strongly.

I much prefer triangle-junk guy on the left wall. But, hey, it's Recently Guy on the righthand balcony!

First listen of the single is alright. I was really hoping whichever song is in the first preview video was the single because that intro is hot. The lead single is never remotely close to being the best cut on the album. I'm glad they're starting the pre-orders soon, though. I wonder what good stuff will be added through the Warehouse.
Hot damn, the pre-order bonus (at least for Warehouse members) is a copy of Live Trax 15- 8.9.08 at Alpine. That show is great. The middle part of the set is damn near perfect, especially ASTB>Too Much tease>Halloween. The way the crowd roars when the guys launch into Halloween gives me chills every time. I hope it's not too muted on the official release.

Even though it sounds a lot like their other post-BCTS stuff, of which I'm not a huge fan, I really dig this. Love the melody that kicks in around the 2:00 mark. Carter is tearin' it up, as usual. Good song.

Pre-order is up.

I know 60 bucks is a ridiculous price for stuff I'll probably look at once and shelve. Aside from the nebulous "extra tracks", why do I still want it so bad?

5-part interview with Dave and Carter at MTV News.

It's pretty cool that GrooGrux goes back to pre-DMB C'Ville days. Here's the "Big Whiskey" guy Dave mentions in part 4.

They're doing a good job of talking up the record but I'm still a little burned by the nonsense they were spouting during the Everyday promos to fully believe them. The new songs they played at the MSG show sound pretty good, though. I just hope it's not like Stand Up where the better songs, for whatever reason, were relegated to B-sides.
Full album streaming at Pandora. I'm not sure how long that will be going. Only on the third full song so far but I like it. Shake Me Like A Monkey is going to kick ass live.

eta: Yeah, after a (admittedly distracted) first listen, I'll say this is the best since BTCS. That's not saying a whole lot, granted, but there's a lot of good stuff on here. Some weird things going on but overall very good. All of these songs could be great live.
I kinda disagree. I think it's pretty average. Good, but almost never GREAT.
Shake me like a monkey seems to be the best song. I need to listen to it a few more times. But was underwhelmed with the first listen.
So, the big question: as an increasingly casual fan who really didn't care for "Stand Up", is "Big Whiskey" worth the buy?
I've only given it one listen so far, but it's a bit distanced from Stand Up. Sounds a lot more like their older stuff, with a few new wrinkles.

I like what I've heard. Definitely has a BTCS vibe to it. Hoping to check out the DVD tonight.
Like alot of people here, I'm a big fan of the older stuff but not much else. The only thing I've bought since BTCS is Busted Stuff. I'd say Groogrux sounds like a blend between those two. I'm digging it so far. Seems to lose a little steam towards the end, but overall its a solid album.

For me, that's pretty high praise.

I'm enjoying this a lot more than any of their recent output, that's for sure. "Why I Am" feels like an Everyday outtake.

Beacon concert last night.

ETA :

"Seven" is growing on me quite a bit.
Early standout for me is 'Squirm'. Really liking that one.

This is pretty much what I thought when I listened to it last week. The electric influence from Everyday and Stand Up is in there but there's a much stronger Lillywhite vibe. It really comes through in the live versions I've heard of the new songs, I think. The vast majority of the Everyday and Stand Up songs have never translated well to the stage (What You Are and You Might Die Trying being the exceptions, after a fair amount of work) but the new stuff sounds rather good. I was afraid the new disc was going to suffer from Stand Up Syndrome, where all the good cuts ended up being b-sides or not even recorded, but I don't think that's the case.

Granted, this is all going off of one listen of the studio cuts since I'm still waiting for my copy. UPS Ground* is stupidly slow. Brown is not doing anything for me.

*I just paid 60 bucks for your album and you want to charge me another $25 for speedy shipping? Fuck you.
Ok, after a few more listens i'm ready to be more forgiving to the album. I actually like it quite a bit.
Some songs are really really good. Looking forward to hearing them live. That's what really matters.

Love all the references to the Groo Goox King.

It does. It plays a lot better live, though.

Maybe I had low expectations but I'm surprised at how much I'm loving this album. "Lying in the Hands of God" could damn near be a BTCS b-side. I love "Seven" also.
Now that I've had a few days, I can safely say I love this album. Time Bomb, Squirm, and Shake Me Like a Monkey are my early favorites.

Definitely looking forward to seeing some of these live.

I'll finally be seeing them in September for the 1st time. So that'll be nice.

"Funny the Way It Is" video.

A lot like the "Eh Hee" video but with cute white girls instead of freaky-dancing Asians. Weird.
