Music for a short film project

I'm hoping anyone here can offer some advice on music selection.

I'm helping a friend out with a short film he's shooting on his Canon 5D MkII as a technical exercise. It's supposed to be around 1:30 to 2 minute short that shows 2 people chatting online and meeting later.

When it comes to music, I'm woefully ignorant about what's out there. My friend also seems to be at a loss for what to lay under the footage in order to help pace the short. So I was hoping some Chewers could make some suggestions.

The tone of the piece could vary at this point, but right now we're leaning towards something fast, upbeat, and mellow at the same time. He seems to kinda like the sound of Up Against the Wall by Peter Bjorn and John.

Maybe I should post this in the filmmakers thread too...

I assume you're talking about music rights. Myself, I wouldn't worry much, as long as you're not selling the short film. And practically no one buys shorts anyway. For festival competition, well, it helps to make friends who are musicians (or you could make silent films).

EDIT: But there is a just as equal chance you're not speaking of music rights, in which case I must suggest that you don't yet know what movie you're making, and should let it just blossom over time or be crap as you make it, as long as it's being worked on to begin with. No one can help you with this question unless a Chewer saw footage of your film, and then the Chewer in question would just be putting their own authorial stamp on the movie, a movie that you're still figuring out (I don't mean this as a slight, I'll be making my next film on-the-fly as well, seeing if the general concept comes together or not in the editing room).

Ah, no. I'm not talking about music rights at all. Just some inspired choices to edit to. Later, we'll try to get someone to compose some original music for it. It's just a temptrack for ourselves.

I'd try Ghosts I-IV by Nine Inch Nails.

1. It's a variety of instrumental stuff
2. It covers an interesting range of moods
3. It's released under Creative Commons so that may help with the rights stuff when you get to it.

As an editor myself, I would advise you to not cut to music at all unless there is something very specific you want to do with it...get the beats of the dialogue and reactions down first and then worry about music, especially a temp track. You will be very surprised as to what music fits without you having to actually "cut to" it.

I also completely agree with what you guys said above! Of course, I often go against this anyway... heheh.

In this case, it's really more of a music video/commercial in spirit. No dialogue, and possibly no sound either (we'll see though). I'll discipline myself to not cut so specifically to the beat of whatever song is temped. I want to keep it a little loose.

Thanks for the advice!

All of the music on www.CLLCT.com is under a creative commons license of some kind, so it's a good place to find easy to secure music you can use in your films.

Thanks for the reference to Creative Commons, Kriegaffe and Patrick. I'll check it out and send it to my friend as well.
