Alien Nation

Ok, the movie still holds up but I've never seen the series or the TV-movies. Johnson has a pretty good track record so it looks worth watching. (although I don't know why he doesn't like V The Final Battle)

The series was damn good, better than the movie in all honesty but the film was also solid mainly because Caan and Patinkin played well off each other.

Best episodes from the series were the one about the Russian Roulette-like ritual that some Newcomers had to endure on their slave ship and the one where the police precinct falls under siege.

Don't remember a whole lot about the TV movies.

I vaguely remember not liking the TV movies nearly as much as the series. The series was required viewing in our geek circle at the time though. Not sure how it's aged.

I remember seeing the movie in the theaters. I liked it for the most part (as was mentioned above, the interplay between Caan and Patinkin is quite strong), but I hated how it ended. For a non-action movie, the tacked on 'Lethal Weapon' ending felt very wrong. I never watched the series or the TV movies.

I liked the ending of the film, at least in terms of Caan at his daughter's wedding. More alien buddy cop movies should fade to credits with The Four Tops' Indestructible blaring away. What a happy song.

Molt: it's been a long time for me, but I was talking more about the 'Terrance Stamp turning into the Incredible Hulk' sequence that doesnt work. The character moments, like you described above, all work fine.

I don't know how the series has aged, but I can say that sight unseen that this is the greatest comic book of all time.

Now that's a crossover!

The action in the film was nothing to write home about, unless the basis of the letter was how the action in ALIEN NATION wasn't all that spectacular. The opening scene where Caan's partner bites it was pretty good, but other than that it's mainly just the two leads that make the film worth watching.

Paging Ron Moore. Forget Caprica, focus on getting a reboot of this show off the ground. The sheer amount of social commentary you could shove into any one episode is staggering.

I'd be interested in seeing the TV show again as well. I really liked it at the time but was so in love with the concepts and world set up by the movie that I probably wasn't the most critical viewer.

It didn't last too long, did it? Guess it just wasn't as good as Sliders or Stargate Atlantis.

George is my favorite Mandy Patinkin character (and yes, I'm aware of what that is worth).

I remember there being quite a few tv movies. The only one I can remember off the top of my head was a newcomer either running for mayor or city council that involved mind controlled assassins and George's son going onto the force.

I really enjoyed the film, and have watched it off and on over the years... but try as I may, I could not get into the TV series.

I'm sure the writing was good, and the characters were varied and interesting, but I could not see anyone but James Caan as Sykes, nor anyone but Mandy Patinkin as George.

The only tv movie I can recall had something to do with the imminent threat of a return by the race that had originally enslaved the, um, whatever they were called. I didn't watch it and it seemed like a pretty limiting direction for the property.

It's been said before, but you could do a good update of the film.

Although I always thought that since the newcomers were slave labor. The original owners would've have thought "fuck it" and gotten some more. Why bother trying to go back and retrieve it?

That's not exactly comparable. Sliders got cancelled after a season too, but it was brought back.

Alien Nation was also 1989-1990 while Sliders didn't premier until 1995.

It was a different time.

A strange time of Beans Baxters and Parker Lewises...

There was no Sci-Fi Channel to pick the show up then, was there? These days, I'm pretty sure if I wrote a letter and asked very nicely, I could get my own adventure show on there and it would run five years minimum.

Boy, do I ever agree with this.

What I recall was that the Alien Nation show was paired on Monday nights with the last Depp-led season of 21 Jump Street.

Those were fun nights.

What do you mean, "if?" Didn't we have your drunken missives to thank for The Dresden Files?

Sundays before The Simpsons I believe. Up against 60 Minutes. Grieco never had a prayer.

The less said about circa 1990 the better.

I loved Alien Nation-The Series. Even had the soundtrack and wore it out. Bought all the tie -in books too. Did this ever come out on dvd?
