Late night w/Jimmy Fallon

Thread Starter
caught some of this today at lunch since I DVR'd it.

surprisingly everything Fallon did to incorporate the Roots' back up band was great. Slow Jammin the news should be a popular bit.

also good to see the Higgins' boy back on TV!

I fast forwarded Deniro as the interview seemed awkward but Fallon and Justin Timberlake was another great segment.

that's all I caught but I definately watch this again, especially with the boys from Diggnation later this week.

I thought his opening bits were decent, considering he's new at this. I thought his exchange with Conan was gold.

I had to turn it off, though, after "Lick it for Ten". Ugghh. I kept waiting for some kind of payoff, but they couldn't even bring in anything interesting for them to lick.

I think this will be one of those shows where I'll only watch clips on the internet, and even then only if they go viral.

I still don't quite understand why they picked Fallon. I'm increasingly getting the feeling that other, more talented people just didn't want the job. Oh well, it took Conan a while to become who he is now, maybe after a while Fallon will find his own style and niche.

Is he still laughing at his own jokes?

But Conan had literally no expectations to play against. Fallon has been in the public eye for a decade now, and he comes prepackaged with actual detractors who are rooting for him to fail because of what he's done in the past. Conan's blank slate helped him, I think, whereas Fallon may be yanked before he's allowed to find that stride.

Two late night shows in front of him won't help either.

This was painful. I watched because of ?uestlove, but they didn't even have him as a side kick.

HOWEVER, there was an irreverent slant to the DeNiro interview that I thought showed promise. I kept waiting for that to really reveal itself, but Fallon was too nervous to work that angle. The whole "questions with one word answers" premise was nice, but it fell apart on delivery.

I'm going to DVR the first two weeks of shows and if I see no promise, I'm done. But I have a weird desire to see Fallon succeed. Not sure where it's coming from.

I enjoyed Slow Jammin' The News. That Space Train bit with DeNiro was really painful, and Jimmy was just nervous overall. Maybe he can learn to slow down and breathe a bit more, and be a better interviewer.

Hopefully we'll see more humor with the band, too. ?uestlove posted on Twitter an hour ago about how he hadn't made a fool of himself around Tina Fey... yet.
I liked Fallon more than I thought I would. He's nervous and unpolished, yeah, but his "aw shucks" appeal kind of works at night. This first episode wasn't GREAT but it wasn't bad. I am interested in seeing Tina Fey as a guest.

I think this show will work nicely following Conan.

Although, you kind of have to dig how emphatically De Niro gave his one line in the thing. He was more into that than he was the interview.
The only thing funny about his monologue was the guy in the crowd yelling 'Oh yeah' during teacher/student sex joke.
Doubt I'll ever watch this again, unless there's some real epic guest on.

Hated the DeNiro interview. It actually looked like DeNiro was somewhat relaxed and not feeling tortured to be there. What's the point of watching DeNiro interviewed on a talk show if he isn't going to constantly squirm in his seat and act all fidgety? Take that away and he's just a boring clod.

Timberlake's impressions were pretty good. Weird to see Fallon and him reminisce wistfully over some SNL sketch that I don't have the foggiest idea of. Guess I'm officially out of the loop when it comes to that show.
Slow Jammin' the news was OK. The rest was crap.
"Please stand in front of the Sharp 108"

It's become clear to me that this show has been designed primarily for the kind of product placement that NBC's been getting a real kick out of lately, and that Jimmy Fallon was selected because he's the kind of pushover that will gladly be in an hour-long commercial. I got the vibe during the "lick it for 10" segment the first night, but this clinches it.

EDIT: He even went through pains to say "T-Mobile Sidekick" in a punchline, when Sidekick would suffice.
I like him and always liked him on SNL. I think he's still got some jitters but last night was much better, what with Bon Jovi and the facebook gag. He'll do fine.
I'm curious about seeing this, need to find torrents of the aired shows.

If you want to see a Jimmy Fallon interview when he's truly in his element, watch his interview with Tina Fey last night (it's up on Hulu.com).

Granted, they know each other, so it's kind of cheating, but if he can get to a point where he's that comfortable with himself and all the people he's interviewing, I think the show will be quite a bit better.

On another note, I think he has a great opportunity to make a show that is much more connected to the young, web 2.0 crowd, something that the older talk-show folks aren't that interested in.

For instance, I know pretty soon he's going to have the guys from Diggnation on his show. He also Twitters like a maniac, and I think he's paying attention to a lot of the internet feedback coming his way. I think he could end up using all this to make a show that is very unique among late-nite shows.

Like someone else said, I'm finding myself really rooting for him to succeed, even though I've found him pretty mediocre in the past.
I don't really know this dude, but he's cringe worthy to watch.

Yes, he's still laughing at pretty much everything.

As do I. I've only seen his first show and it had it's moments (already been pointed out) but haven't caught the others, that's on DVR. Hopefully he'll relax and progressively get better!

I thought the whole Fey episode was pretty good fun. I was off brushing my teeth or something during the monologue, though, and I never really like monologue jokes from anyone all that much. The Facebook joke was pretty tired, I thought, but a nice update of something we've seen in other forms elsewhere before. They REALLLY stood in front of the Sharp 108" for too long, but the appearance of Castle Greyskull was kind of great.

As for the "young, web 2.0 crowd" comment above, he was soliciting questions for Cameron Diaz this afternoon via Twitter. That's pretty cool. We'll see if anyone asks if she can come over to their house and model some Underoos for them.
I just watched the first episode. It wasn't THAT bad.

I've never quite liked Fallon's delivery in general. He needs to tone it down and slow down when he speaks, but it wasn't a disaster. It was his first show, probably a nervous wreck. Let the guy be for a while.
Nope. One and done. Unless he has someone like Sly or Burt Reynolds on or something.
Fallon's fault was one of Conan's greatest assets. Being quick-witted in idle conversation. I noticed four very awkward pauses in the Fey interview that Conan would have either kept the ball rolling or knocked it out of the park.

Fallon's just not a naturally funny guy. He's just that nice friend of a friend who you can shoot the shit with when in a group and never think about again.
And tonight he proves me half-way wrong. This episode was much, much better than the last two. It was actually a good show. His interaction with Diaz and Crudup was very engaging.
The first few Conan interviews were really bad. However what he had going for him was Smigel and a host of very talented writers who gave him great and unique material from the outset.

The vast majority of the comedy stuff so far has been bad to a point where Fallon can't really do anything with it.

I think he is a nice guy, and it may be nerves/inexperience but he really doesn't seem mentally sharp enough to get everything flowing.

watched with the diggnation boys and as geeky as it was, I enjoyed it.

K rose and Alex could probably take diggnation to late night cable if they wanted to.
Kevin Rose annoys the shit out of me for some reason. And I used to be a huge fan of diggnation.

I did enjoy the Russel Brand interview though. "Decorated his face...with a pearl of sperm hanging from his ear"

I probably butchered that line, but I laughing pretty fucking hard.
Going back to the product placement that someone mentioned earlier, they BUD LIGHT Green Room was pretty laughable last night. Not sure if they've shown that before-- I've only seen a few episodes so far.

The Twitter thing is interesting. That guy they pimped out last night got over 20,000 followers overnight (he had 7 yesterday), and they've asked him back on the show tonight.

?uestlove claims he's on a... quest, heh, to get him 100,000 followers. Dude's Gmail account must be bustin' with follow notices.

Oh, also, I didn't care for The Virgins last night, but it's cool how they let some fans in the risers around the band on stage while they perform.
Watched last nights episode before I headed off to work this morning...yeah I'm done. I couldn't kill the season pass quick enough.
Somewhat surprisingly, it looks like he's doing pretty well in the ratings.

Jimmy Fallon finished his first week as host of NBC's "Late Night" franchise on top, beating all cable and broadcast competition while also besting incumbent Conan O'Brien's season average.
OH MY GOD Jimmy has got to stop saying "buddy" and "pal" so much.

I think he called Amy Poehler "pal" three times in about 15 seconds tonight, and Jennifer Aniston got at least one "buddy" the other night. Take a breath, dude.
Conan can't come back soon enough....
This deserves a damn bump.

Tonight: Jessica Biel, Rachel Dratch, Jason Sudeikis at E3, and Doves!
You gotta give Fallon props for getting Zach Morris on the show. As if getting Mario Lopez to do the Save the Max speech wasn't surreal enough. Down to Kelly and Screech as the hold outs.
Will Ferrell was hysterical, but jesus, who made the decision to do that 'serious' bit? Didn't they know Fallon could never get through it without laughing constantly??

It was nice to see Mighty Mos Def. He seemed a little out of it tonight though for some reason.
Will Ferrell and Mos Def getting along so well makes me feel like I'm watching and listening to the right stuff.
Alec Baldwin is on tonight, and according to Questlove's Twit-chatter during the show today, it is not to be missed. Also, Michaels Showalter and Black.
Apparently, the Mighty Boosh fellows are going to be on tomorrow night.
This show is not nearly as horrible as we all hoped it would be.
Yeah, I think Fallon is legitimately great on The Hills parody they do every Monday. The monologue is always terrible, but his interviews are getting better. My favorite is how every guest comes out and is like, "I LOVE The Roots!" Right.
Holy fucking shit!

JAWBOX !!!!

From pitchfork:

http://pitchfork.com/news/36735-jawb...ite-on-fallon/

Say what you will about Jimmy Fallon's unctuous, sycophantic interview style, but the man has turned his show into probably the most dependable late-night TV music stop since mid-90s Conan. This goes way beyond Fallon hiring the Roots as his house band. Last week, he hosted the Dirty Projectors and Sunny Day Real Estate on consecutive nights. And in two months, he'll play host to the first performance in 12 years from D.C. post-hardcore heroes Jawbox, Billboard reports.

Back in July, we reported that the band was preparing to reissue their 1994 major label debut For Your Own Special Sweetheart. That remastered album is due November 23 from DeSoto Records, the label run by former member Kim Coletta. And now Billboard reports that the band will reconvene on "Fallon" on December 8.
At the moment, the band has no plans for any further reunion shows, but maybe if we ask real nice...

The Sunny Day Real Estate reunion was really awesome. Jimmy Fallon has really great music guests. Loved the Living Colour performance too. If you go to the website most bands do web only performances as well as their televised ones.
So Jimmy Fallon, Artie Lange, Olivia Munn and Susan Sarandon are playing ping pong...

Fallon usually sucks, but seriously, that was a great show. They had some killer chemistry.
I only tuned into fallon to see artie butt that whole show was great.
I watched the clips this morning from Hulu.com, and I thought it was really good. Is Fallon turning the corner? I may have to start DVR'ing his show, if so.
Honestly, he's got a fun show on his hands. He gets great guests - devoted that whole show to Monty Python, for example. And his taped segments are pretty funny. Especially liked his parody of The Hills. Last night was a good example of why his show's worth watching. He's certainly not the best interviewer, but he actually seems to be having fun on his show.
Yeah, it's not like it's coompeting with anything else that I would tape, maybe I'll DVR as well. I've been loving watching DVR'd Conan.

I'm getting deja-vu. Is it 1993?
It still bugs me a bit that both Fallon and Leno seem to get better guests than Conan.
