New species discovered in deep ocean

Nothing spectacular, but pretty damned neat.

I love this bit:

Once, he says, none of the scientists or pilots said a word for 10 minutes straight as their submersible glided over an undiscovered coral reef full of urchins and sponges and sea stars.

Awesome.

I once worked with someone who thought giant squid were a myth. I told him about the video of the giant squid that was caught attacking bait a few years ago. He proceeded to say I was making it all up.

These guys are really skirting the edge of the Benthic Treaty. If the Deep Ones get wind of this, Angleton will have to have a nice chat with these scientists. [This joke/reference for Stross/Laundry novels fans only]

It really is crazy how much of the deep ocean remains unseen and unknown. Cthonic/Lovecraftian horrors would only mildly surprise me.

Very cool. I love the lack of scale in the photo.

So, 10 inches long? Four feet? Three hundred?

I figure it's some sort of feeler/tentacle thing attached to the back of Cthulhu or whatever the hell made The Bloop sound.

But are they crisp and delicious with a light panko breading and a squeeze of lemon?

I discovered my squirt in someone's trench just the other day!

The deep ocean is the most beautiful place on Earth I can imagine other than Antarctica (which I want to visit before I die.) I live on the coast and sometimes drive alongside the water, trying to project my imagination and fathom just how big it all is. It's as if it's looming right there, inside of us, necessary for our survival, and yet there's certain things we'll just never know. Talking to friends about this, I've playfully offered the idea that if there's a Texas-sized creature living somewhere in the Indian Ocean, whole civilizations could die and we'll never find it.

Sorry to ruin the run of Lovecraftian/Bloop jokes.

All the more powerful because Staraflur is only 6 minutes long.
