Volver (2006)

As much as I like Pedro Almodóvar's films, and as much as I liked Penelope Cruz's performance in this film, I can't agree with people who rate this near the top of Almodóvar's canon, or in the top foreign films of 2006. It's a decent film, but it's familiar territory, and not nearly as original or even groundbreaking as Habla Con Ella or Todo sobre mi madre when they were released. I'd even rate Atame! higher than this. It's not bad, but just not as good as I was expecting.

This was the first (and only, I'll get around to other, better ones, to be sure) Almodovar film that I saw, and I guess I just have to chime in here and agree. It felt like a very typical indie movie, with most of the compelling thematic content having been explored better in other films. Very disappointing, considering the pedigree and expectations.

It wasn't awful, just bland.
