Instruments for 99.99? No thank you.
If they nab Rickenbackers I'm going to have to get more fucking plastic instruments in my house.
Awesome news. Assuming they are all master tracks, correct?

One would hope, but we don't know for sure.

If anyone has their masters in proper shape, you'd assume it would be the Beatles.

Unless something quite extraordinary is done with the new instruments, I'm going to pass; I've got plenty of guitars at this point. The game itself will be a must buy.

A plastic sitar would be pretty damn funny, though.

My question is now that they've attached the "Rock Band" name to this game, have they changed their minds about whether you can import these tracks (like you could with AC/DC's disc).

It's really hard to imagine a deal-breaker with this game. Unless the only tracks are "Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9", this is a must-buy.

That's likely a Beatles/Apple decision, in which case my bet would be on 'no'.

That's a shame. Again, not a deal-breaker, but if I have friends over, it's basically like asking "Okay, who wants to play ONLY Beatles songs?" Then again, with a band like The Beatles, that could actually be enough.

I'm really curious what they're doing to the instruments that would necessitate such a price hike. This is a must-buy game anyway but if they do something interesting with the instruments I'd consider buying a new bundle.
I'm wagering that the instruments are just slightly different molds. I can't imagine them adding any kind of new functionality while also keeping compatibility with old hardware.

Can't wait to accidentally sing "Golden Showers fill my eyes" in mixed company.

I think I'm the only person on the planet that doesn't give two shits about this game. And I'm fine with that. Although, like Grave, I do wonder about the new instruments.
I'm assuming the higher price is simply a case of believing they can get it. Which is probably true.

And while I love The Beatles, I have to say that playing along with them, for whatever reason, doesn't grab me in the same way as with many other of my favorites (my interest in playing along with Bob Dylan is pretty limited, too). I'll probably get the game, but doubt I'd go for the new instruments... though if they're smart, they'll arrange for the new drum kit to feature a reproduction of the face of Ringo's bass drum.

I wasn't expecting this until November-ish, so that's cool.

I'm hearing 99 is a guitar AND the game.

Not sure that's true, but I've already asked MTV for clarification.

Here's what the release says:

The Beatles: Rock Band Standalone Guitars - Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3, Wii: $99.99 MSRP

That might be two guitars, guitar and game, or just guitar.
Hmm. I'm also hearing rumors of new peripherals, possibly piano/keys. But it's the same source that told me 99 was guitar and game, so who knows.
With the pack being $250, there's gotta be something special about those instruments. Wish the release were a little clearer about that, though. And it does seem a tad pricey for just the guitar... not sure how they'd get away with that.

Russ- you get that release about Guitar Hero Greatest Hits today? Guess they wanted to steal a little thunder. The only problem is that no one cares about playing the same goddamn songs we already bought in the last GH games.

From one of the main MTV folks:

Re: the The Beatles: Rock Band Standalone Guitars @ 99.99 -
this sku refers to one of the limited number of standalone guitar controllers that we will be offering separately for purchase

Alex - I did, and knew about that one already. Yeah, who cares....
I think this being stand alone is a deal breaker for me.

I can understand for the Beatles catalog harmonix/MTV will do whatever it takes, but as a loyal rock band user and DLC buyer I am a bit pissed off about this.

I hope there is something different about the engine because if it is just a tweaked rock band engine with Beatles songs that would be a huge letdown.
Yeah, seems like a rental to me (same for GH: Metallica, despite loving that tracklist). Barring a massively improved career mode, I can't see a standalone game getting any long-term playtime with RB2's tracklist available.
Reading the Kotaku headline, "Realism being Key", I immediately thought of them turning down and muting the master tracks halfway through career mode and cranking up the sound of thousands of girls screaming and crying.

It would almost be awesome.
It's hard for me to imagine NOT buying this game. And if Kotaku is right and they do have Beatles DLC... fuuuuuuck.
