Michael Jackson's Comeback?

He just announced a series of Concerts that he's claiming will be his 'final curtain call' to his fans.

Quote:
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Reclusive pop icon Michael Jackson announced Thursday a set of major concerts -- which he called a "final curtain call."

In a brief news conference in London he said: "I will be performing the songs my fans want to hear.

"This is it, the final curtain call."

He took no questions after the statement and it was not immediately clear if Jackson meant the concerts were his "curtain call" for London or the wider world.

Jackson will perform at least 10 concerts at London's O2 Arena, according to the host of the announcement event.

In a statement on its Web site, the 20,000-seat venue had invited Jackson fans to see a "special announcement" -- and to sign up for ticket alerts.

A few hundred die-hard fans turned up for the event.

Jackson was more than 90 minutes late for the announcement that lasted about three minutes.

What relevance does he have anymore to the music scene? If none, why do people still care? Is it pure nostalgia to see him perform his greatest hits?

Jackson isn't coming back unless there's a nine year old boy involved.

Badum-Tshh!

Using the words come, back, and Michael Jackson in the same sentence, are grounds for an immediate and painful "Johnny Rico" style public flogging.

Another pop star trying to relive past glories... and sucker people for hundreds when buying tickets.

Anyone care to recall The Eagles "Sittin' On Barstools" Tour?

Note the no US dates. He has a fairly large base of fans outside the US and he needs the money. Hence, a comeback.

Edited to add: Judy Garland did the same thing in London and made out fairly well (money-wise). Fiscally, it isn't a bad idea, provided he can actually perform.

I am looking forward to the Trainwreck we know is coming.

And Wacko Jacko needs the money. It;s is incredible that someone as wealthy as he once was could manage to waste it all, but that is what has happened.

I'd kill to see MJ back in the pre-Dangerous days. Now, not so much.

I 100% agree with this.

I'm sure it's strange to a modern teenager that there was a time when Jackson was without question the biggest star in the world. Oh...how times have changed...

Oh, make no mistake, in his prime I believe he had no equals. Which is why in spite of all the easy jokes he provides, his current state is really sad.

Hahah Jamie, that old quote works.

No question, Jackson was the single biggest star of the 1980s.

Have had it for awhile now, good Sir. For some reason, the post where you said that was taken down?

I remember having a "Thriller" MJ doll when I was a super young kid.

No matter WHAT he's done in the past 15-20 years, nobody will ever be able to take 'Thriller' or 'Bad' away from him. 'Thriller', in particular, still holds up as a phenomenal recording.

Watching him on some awards show do the moonwalk for the first time...WOW.

How sad. Isn't this basically like wanting to see Muhammad Ali make a "comeback?"
I guarantee these shows never actually happen.

This whole thing is strangely fascinating. He's been reportedly working on a new album for years now, but who knows if it'll ever see the light of day at this point.

Also, as great as Thriller is, I do have a fondness for some of his later era stuff. HIStory, while spotty, had some of his most interesting songs.

I really can't see them selling out "at least 10" shows, especially if they're all in London. Am I that far off on the number of Brits with a lot of money to spend?

Well, it's not a one-for-one comparison but Prince sold out 30-odd shows at the same venue last summer but was only charging £31.21 (about $40?) per ticket.

That said, according to the newspapers over here today the site you need to register at to buy tickets is getting up to 16,000 hits per second. In short, then. Yes, it looks like there are a lot of people who will pay.

I won't be there but I did see him on the Bad tour in 1988. It was great!

You beat me to it, HBarr. That's pretty damn incredible.

From Glen Scanlon
CNN

LONDON, England (CNN) — Tickets for Michael Jackson’s 50 “final curtain
call” concerts in London sold out in four hours Friday, the events’ organizers
said.

The tickets went on sale at 7 a.m., with fans queuing since Wednesday. They were limited to four tickets per household at a cost of up to $105 for
general admission. VIP tickets cost up to $1,100. Around 750,000 were sold.

Tickets have already appeared online for resale, with one person seeking
$35,000 for VIP tickets to the opening show on July 8.

Jackson originally announced he would do 10 shows at London’s
20,000-capacity 02 Arena, but huge demand has seen a further 40 dates added.

Fuck yeah, I'm a child of the eighties, I grew up in the shadow of Michael.

I remember not sleeping for 6 months after seeing the Thriller film clip for the first time, I remember dragging my poor dad to see Moonwalker at the cinemas, I remember the best of the guy. I even came to appreciate most of his early stuff as I got older and the stuff he did with his brothers even more than Bad and subsequenct albums.

I put on Off The Wall these days which is still a mother-fucking killer album and I just shake my head wondering just what happened to that guy.

More than any of his other albums, Michaels first was simply beyond cool with Thriller as a close second.

I couldn't bring myself to see him now tho.

I wouldn't touch these shows with a 10ft clown pole.
I just saw this as a headline on CNN, and came in here to accept my wrongitude. DAMN.

But I really don't think he'll make it through 50 shows! It's like a Van Halen reunion tour-- it'll never last as long as it's supposed to.

I had an MJ impersonator at my 9th birthday party ('85). All the kids thought it was the real deal.

Funny you should mention that - I just ripped the Bad Special Edition to my Itunes, and with the two bonus tracks (Streetwalker and Fly Away) substituting for one or two of the weaker album cuts, it reveals itself to be a way more interesting record than I ever gave it credit for.
