The first single, 'Panic Switch':

Kickass.

Thought their debut Carnavas showed much potential, and satisfied my hunger for dreamy guitar-pop.

Last album was fucking amazing. Can't wait for this one. Any other good music for someone into this band? Doesn't have to be this style. Although wouldn't mind some more Guitar pop.

Seconding this request. I still play the hell out of Carnavas.
I'm glad their new album is coming out later this year.

I remember starting the thread for Carnavas the day the record came out...
it was one of the best records that year, and practically NO ONE responded. I absolutely thought I was the only one who liked the record.

I was sad. Then 7 months later the board started to come around and realize that this shit was damn good.

I'm so getting that.

Well, I came on late to the party last year, and fell in love with the album. Can't wait for the new one.

The closest thing I can think of for dreamy pop guitar sounds would be the first two Smashing Pumpkins albums. That's totally what Silversun pickups reminds me of.. the two best Pumpkin albums. They both have the same initials, also... SP... weird.

I think it might be intentional. The influence is very strong.

If you're looking for some great guitar-pop, you can't go wrong with My Bloody Valentine. Sonic Youth would be another pick, though they fall more into the "grunge guitar" category. I'd check out their latter-day efforts (stuff like Sonic Nurse) if you want the immediacy that the Silversun Pickups bring. Other bands that come to mind: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Catherine Wheel, Broken Social Scene, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, The Boo Radleys, The Verve, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Yo La Tengo. Obviously the first two Smashing Pumpkins discs, as already was mentioned.

The original link doesn't work anymore. It's up on You Tube:

I loved Carnavas, but this song just seems off for a single.

As a song it's great, but not sure what they're attempting with a 6-minute repeat of their last album.

alot of that stuff is more post rock like mogwai and explosions or indie rock. but is there any more guitar pop stuff, i don't know why but Galaxie 500. I need good music if it leans to indie rock.

Absolutely love this group and the new single. They are rocketing up the charts into my favorite groups. I caught them back in 2007 with Sea Wolf opening and it was pretty goddamn good. I hope to catch them again when they tour for this album.

Wow (this leaked).

Head-and-shoulders better than Carnavas. 'Panic Switch' might be the weakest track on here.

'There's No Secrets This Year' has gotta be one of the greatest openers I've heard in ages. 'The Royal We' is...stunning.

Billy Corgan should just stop recording the next Pumpkins album. He won't come close to this album's level of songwriting splendor.

I have to second all this, especially re: 'Panic Switch'. I can't wait to pick this up.

4/14 is marked for me. I've been loving Carnavas since it came out. Always happy when new music worth picking up comes out.

I thought this might be hyperbole, but no. Swoon's leaps and bounds ahead of Carnavas and will probably go down as one of the best of the 2009.

"The Royal We" is my favourite song of the year so far.

Yeah, it grew on me HARD. I just skipped straight to it yesterday afternoon instead of going through "There's No Secrets This Year" first. That's going to be the first song that I play to death off of this album.

"Substitution" is beyond awesome.
This album smack the shit out of Carnavas.

New video HERE

song rules. video sucks.. but the drummer kicks ass.

Seems like I have a new favorite from this album every time I listen to it.

Today's pick: 'Sort Of'. The bass-line is smoldering. Fuck, the production on this entire album is a work of sheer genius.

EDITED TO SAY: I actually like the video for 'Panic Switch', neaux.
The first 5 songs are rock solid, but then again, I listened to this at work, and sometimes got interrupted.

So far, my favorite is Growing Old is Getting Old.
Big fan of this album. I think "Panic Switch" deserves to be a monster hit. Its one of my top songs in a long time. I love the rest of the album as well, but that's just a great single and should get this group the recognition they deserve.
I'm only halfway through, but so far, yes, this album is far greater than Carnavas.

I want to say they're using the strings far too much to compensate for other deficiencies, but damn they work so fucking well.

I just wish they could have ONE shorter song.
The fact that Pitchfork gave this album a 5.3 is just another proof that this site is beyond retarded.
Pitchfork's reviews are always awful. Even when they like something, the review still sounds negative.

I had to buy this CD through Amazon (since I had a certificate), looks like I won't be getting my copy in the mail until Friday.
Holy shit I can't wait to get this after work.

If anyone needs any more convincing, the whole album is $3.99 at Amazon's MP3 store, today only.

With all this love heaped upon it and thoughts that this is better than Carnavas... I just stuck Carnavas in right now, and I can say that I still love the album.
I never got into Carnavas. I listened to it a handful of times, but it never caught me. A few months later someone would name drop them, I would give it another listen, and utter "meh" again.

The new album is killer, though. I'll echo the sentiments of others, too. This is the best Smashing Pumpkins album never made.

Reading some of the reviews, you wouldn't know the Silversun Pickups just released one of the best albums of the year. The Smashing Pumpkins comparisons also seem to be undermining this band's talent. They've got their own identity, their own sound, and Swoon is hardly a rehash of the approach they took on Carnavas. Swoon's tunes have more detail and atmosphere...there's an urgency plainly evident here that was missing on Carnavas. The songs are simply tighter, smarter, and, yeah, mind-numbingly addictive. They're coming into their own as a band. All parts of this unit are working as one and feed off each other's strengths.

This is a big band making big music, but without the over-thought and pretentiousness.
You'Re right Ray. I won't lie saying that most of Carnavas sounded like Pumpkins. I mean, no matter how great Lazy Eye is, the resemblance is consternating.

Swoon simply not that. Saying it's a Pumpkin albums IS retarded.
Best four bucks spent in a LONG time. Growning Old is Getting Old might be one of the most infectious songs I've heard in a long time. This whole thing is a GREAT progression in the bands growth. I just know I'm going to be a small, pissed off person when everyone else realizes just how talented they are. As much as I want them to succeed, I just don't want the mainstream hurting my selfish image of them.

I wish I knew more about who they were... need to do some research, cause this drummer is still doing some of the most interesting things out there this side of Radiohead.

I still can't tell if it's the chick or the dude singing, though... and I still don't care.
Goddamn. "The Royal We" on a loop.
finally listening to the full album today at work. Damn my shitty computer speakers.

I took an early lunch to crank this in my car. THAT's when you can hear the orchestral parts and everything else that is sonically great.

One of the best albums of the year, right next to P.O.S.'s Never Better. Both albums are solid grade "A"s.
Just got this album yesterday. I think I have listened to it at least 7 times already, really enjoying it. It's Nice to Know You Work Alone is the one owning me at the moment.

I don't know much about the people in this band, but apparently I live in their neighborhood. Silversun Plaza, where the name is said to come from, is walking distance from here.

I have mixed feelings now about a band called AUTOLUX, also from LA, but they probably could qualify. Their Demonstration EP was very good and got mad play on college radio here years ago, but the eventual album was disappointing to me and i'm not sure why exactly (actually the production seemed weaker come to think). Then I started to see the 'shoegaze' word being tossed around in show reviews about them and stopped following them.

anyway, in Autolux the girl is the drummer, and she rocks, the EP songs I liked the most were called Turnstile Blues, Angry Candy, Sugarless, and Future Perfect. If you can get the EP sent to you thru the band's website, do it, if not dont buy their album, its weaker sauce.
