Joystiq calls it The Greatest Superhero Game Ever Made.

Did they show pictures of a cute inFamous birthday cake, or perhaps an inFamous scarf someone knitted?
I'm pretty sure they made a hilarious word balloon joke.
Why isn't it Thursday yet?! Without my Xbox 360... I NEED this demo.
Yeah, this is sounding more and more like something I'd want to pick up. I'm starting to wish it were coming out on Friday or something though so I could play it over the 3-day weekend.

Until Prototype's reviewed, yes?

Actually, having played demos of both I think I prefer inFamous. Although of course I got way more time with inFamous. When the fucking demo sucks me in like this one, you know you've got something good. Still curious about both, though.
What's keeping me going in this game is (and this is amazing) the story. Not that it's incredible, but there are twists and developments that work pretty well. I've been curious to see how it plays out, rather than just grinding until I get all the powers.

EDIT: There's one 'moral choice' in the game that is obviously a crucial one as soon as it appears. And, unlike most moments like that in games, I actually had to pause and think it out for a minute. That was a minute worth getting to.
I seemed to annoy many when I claimed Prototype's story looks about as engrossing as a pickled egg and that I thought inFamous looked more involving.

Now this is looking to be true, I must plan my smugness.
Well seeing as PROTOTYPE and inFamous are two completely different games. I would temper your smugness accordingly.
I legitimately can't wait for this game, massive fan of the developers anyway, but any excuse to break out the PS3, which is literally gathering dust at the moment, is always something to be celebrated. Now I want my next gen Sly Raccoon game.

Yeah, I've found that even with regular use the PS3 is a bit of a dust magnet. Makes me wish I had that gun-metal gray MGS4 model.

Well yeah, we're all aware of the difference in quality - as demonstrated here (and prompting my small ball of smugness)

I meant that they're both sandbox superpower games. You know, the obvious similarities you're apparently failing to notice.
Don't fight you guys! There's enough super powered sandbox city games for all of us.
I'm only playing, Domingo! You know none of this is real, right? It's all a dream.

It's just nice to have the odd exclusive that isn't utter tosh. Wait until the Mass Effect 2 crowd start rubbing it in...
But if we don't fight we'll just have cordial and reasonable conversations! Do you really want that on your hands, Domingo? Do you?
I refuse to be part of reasonable conversation. I, REFUSE. Carry on my wayward sons.

That reminds me... have any of these moral choice segments taken you out of the game? The video clip of some of these segments (starting a riot, food crates and poster artwork) seemed really hammy and force-fed. I know these types of choices are supposed to engage the player, but hell if that poorly scripted dialog in the video clip didn't turn me off. That, and the game coming to a screeching halt so the player can be told what their actions will mean.
The way the game presents them is definitely ostentatious, and a mark against it. If players could be taught early on that there is more than one action to take in many scenarios, then were allowed to see how each choice affected them in the long run, I'd be happier.

I'd get rid of the karma meter, too. Make karmic progress tracable by the way you look and how people approach you, leave the meters to arcade games.
Its the seamless fusion of the platforming, freerunning elements that have be especially excited for this game, every new video convinces me more and more infamous is going to be special.
Thanks for that, Russ. It's a shame that a pause for a cutscene is the route the developers took, but based on the decent reviews this game is getting, maybe it's not worth getting too hung up about.
Ok I'm sold. Hadn't heard much about this one but i'll look for it on the way home from work.

From the looks of it, between Valkyria Chronicles and this, I'll be regretting my impulse PS3 buy a lot less.

PSN updates aren't until later in the afternoon usually. Maybe the new Resistance 2 Home area is open though. You can go play around in there.
The demo is available if you have a European PSN account.
I only have time for one single person superhero game this summer (Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 will immediately follow).

Will it be infamous or Prototype? I CAN'T DECIDE!

Downloading EU demo now. This will confirm or dispel my only concern about this game (that the electrical power will get boring quickly)

We clearly are at different ends of the player spectrum, as the one thing I am 100% sure about is that I will never, ever, ever, ever get bored of zapping the living shit out of every man, woman, child, animal, building, vehicle, and plant within my field of vision.
Can't you guys create a UK account? Not that you'd ever need it, but I sure enjoy my US and Japan accounts for the early demo access...

I did assume that was part of the appeal, but i'm pretty sure i'll get bored of using Force Lightning on everything. It's how they manage to bring some variety to the electricity mechanic that i'm keen to see.
I got bored of Force Lightning about 30 minutes into The Force Unleashed so I hope there's more to it than that. Although I'm hearing that the powers are essentially analganous to standard FPS weapons

Well, for instance, you can throw lighting grenades. As a player with 'good' karma, you'll often want to build extra XP by running up to downed enemies and doing a little mechanic that restrains them. But one of the upgrades available to a certain 'good' karma level will automatically restrain any enemy damaged by a grenade. So you get several XP bonuses at once in addition to enjoying all the exploding cars and shit that fly when the grenades go off.

There are things like that which keep it from simply being lightning bolt, lightning bolt, lightning bolt!

You guys should just break down and setup a Euro PSN account already. I've used it a number of times for demos that were not released in the US in a timely fashion. The original Uncharted demo was definitely out in the UK before it was in the US and there are some demos that are timed preorder benefits that you can get around that way too.
It's easier than setting up a US account. Those things require vaguely accurate details.

That's good to hear Russ, i'm just about to give it a whirl now.
Ohh. Well my concern wasn't needed - there's certainly an element of repetition there but the was you seem to interact with the environment allows for so much flexible useage of the powers - the Force Push was quite groovy too, and near the end I discovered some kind of super lightning storm...

Massive demo, and untimed too. How kind.

Feeling a little slow early on, despite knowing it's all about grinding those high rails (or hopping on a car apparently!) and the lack of spatial awareness regarding enemies (I know i'm being shot, but I struggled to get a bead on most of them) were my only complaints.

Oddly though, I don't want to buy it.
I'm probably just going to rent. Rogers gives me 5 nights to finish a game or get what I want out of it, and unless it's a heavily multi-player oriented game, 5 days is PLENTY.
Yeah, there's no reason not to rent this (oddly I thought of Urban Chaos when playing it - the idea of 'arresting' suspects and the colour scheme especially, which brings back memories!)

I think I just wanted to do more damage to my environment, which I think's a little greedy of me - it's probably pent up frustration at not being able to get the Red Faction MP demo to work.
YES! It's up North Americans. Downloading.
I was just playing it for a bit and I quite enjoy the free running and the combat. The depressing surrounding kind of hurt it a bit but overall I enjoyed what I played of it.

Definitely more fun going around and just destroying crap than getting annoyed that I accidentally murdered a guy by shooting him off the side of a building.

This is one where I could see myself wandering around and blowing crap up for hours with my villainous character though so I think I may buy it. And like most decent Sony exclusives I don't really see the price dropping that quickly. Amazon has it for $54 so I may just order it from them.
I had a pretty good time with the demo. I really liked how easy it was to scale buildings and move around the city. It was also one of the longest demos I can think of on the PSN so I feel like I got a pretty good feel for what was going on which was nice.

So far the only thing I dont like is the annoying squeaking sound he makes while running around. Its not normally a big deal but when your just traveling outside of battle its pretty noticeable.(Edit: by squeaking sound I mean that thing that sounds like he's always running on a basketball court with brand new shoes, not a sound glitch)

Well, that was fun. I need to roll it around in my brain a bit, but I'm thinking I'll be picking this one up next week.

I'm actually surprised at how much more I prefer the light side powers to the dark side. I think it's the precision. And handcuff grenades. Very fun game. Dig the climbing aspect. Didn't really have any problems latching onto what I did and did not want. And force blasting a dude off the top of a building after climbing all the way up was satisfying.
I think I like this game a lot, I wasn't able to finish the demo thanks to the gf, but I love the climbing and platforming elements, and the physics engine was fairly impressive, I think I'm going to get this soon. It didn't seem like there was much in terms of enemy variety, I only encountered two different types. Also it would have been interesting if they went the Bioshock route where you use both weapons and powers, added more variety. And hopefully the narrative will be a little better than the generic one it seems to be.

There's an amusing little 2d platforming version of Infamous online here- http://www.agame.com/game/Infamous.html?home_new
post #97 of 237
This demo is fucking awesome. The free-roaming is like Crackdown without all the frustrating missed jumps and "not smart enough to latch onto the ledge" grabs. That said, the hit detection, or whatever you want to call it, while you're walking around is a bit too strict. I'm pretty sure nothing bad is going to happen on that six inch drop.

Russ, do the minor everyday things you can do, like healing the random unconscious bums or killing the downed bad guys, affect your karma meter at all in the full game? I was saving hobos left and right when the meter was buried in the red and didn't notice anything. Hell, I even stopped a mugging and didn't notice any effect other than some people clapping for me.

Between this, Prototype, and Red Faction, video games have become the best thing ever all over again.

Very much so, yes. Healing civilians and restraining downed bad guys is the fastest way to push your good karma way up, draining energy and killing folks will push it down fast, too.

When you stop a mugging (and there are a few little non-mission types like that) I don't know if you get a karma boost. Some encounters you do, like when you stop mobs from killing one hogtied person, others I'm not sure.

I did notice at one point in my retail game that some karma didn't register quite right. Seemed like it took WAY longer than it should have to progress through the middle tier of good karma. By comparison, going through the first and third tiers was a lot faster. Shrug.

Have played through the demo twice. Stupid Amazon has it for $53, no tax, and I'm a prime member, but they haven't shipped it yet. Argh. Want game now!
