Red Beard

Been a while since I've seen this, but I've been thinking about it a bit lately, and I think it might be my favorite Kurosawa film. The sick man's story in the middle part of the film is some of Kurosawa's best work, easily, with his form matched to emotional impact in a way I have yet to see surpassed by him (I haven't seen all of his films yet...). I think it's also pretty interesting to see a riff on Frank Capra from him, basically, and to see a film where his humanism shines through almost unadulterated.

Also, I like that Mifune can still kick tons of gangster ass when he's an MD.

Favorite Kurosawa, wow. This is one of the few of his I haven't seen, but since it's so highly recommended I'll have to check. My personal favorite is Ran, but we'll see how this one fairs with me. Thanks for the recommendation.

Well, to be fair, it's not a perfect film. The setup is kind of slow, and you kind of expect something really cliché-ridden after that. But once Mifune is introduced, the film really takes off, and you get some of Kurosawa's most beautiful work, along with some of the best Black and White cinematography ever produced.

Not meaning to be a dick but we had a discussion of this film a few months ago

It's such an amazing film though that it probably deserves two threads.

Well, shit.

But if "The Thing" can have a dozen threads, this movie deserves at least two.

I do really need to see this again, as it's very hazy right now, but I do remember it being one of the most enrapturing film viewing experiences I've ever had. I saw this just before I watched "Throne of Blood," and I think that may have contributed to my disappointment in that film, "Red Beard" is just that good.
