Mindless Video Game Entertainment?

OK, I've been out of the loop as far as video games are concerned since the N64. I have just gotten back into them, and am looking for something very specific. I know about all the big games I want to play (Fable 2, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Gears of War 2, GTA IV, Lost Odyssey, etc, etc) However, I am looking for a game that is mindlessly violent, that I can just pick up and play for a few minutes after I get home from work, without worrying about having to solve anything, or reach a save point. I'd prefer third person something like a third person fighting/shooter I don't really care how old it is, but it has to either be for the Wii or Xbox 360, and I'd prefer something I could pick up cheap.

Any suggestions?

Earth Defense Force 2017 gets a lot of love from certain circles. It's not without its problems, but sounds right up your alley. And it's cheap!

Crackdown would be a another good choice. I cant remember exactly, but i think you could save the game whenever you wanted without having to go to a safe house or anything.

Everyone should own Crackdown. Criminally under-appreciated, and the downloadable content is great. Spear gun!

At this point, it'd be cheaper to head down to your local department store, and you can bring your stress-relieving twelve-gauge to work (I know my place is always looking over my shoulder making sure I'm not playing Don't Shit Your Pants, and even a weighty XBOX controller unto itself is almost useless to bodily injury).

But seriously, pick up Crackdown. Yeah, that'll really do the trick.
Crackdown is one of the few games I miss from when I had a 360. Yeah, there's a bit too much repetition, but you can really get creative on how you go about taking down a large cluster of baddies.

Mindlessly violent? I haven't seen too many reviews, but MadWorld might treat ya right.
MadWorld comes out for the Wii tomorrow. $50 though.

Crackdown has received enough love in this thread, so I'll throw in a voice of support for Earth Defense Force 2017, a game which is pretty much unparalleled as far as mindless action goes. I hear that Onechanbara, by the same developers, is pretty fun, but I haven't tried it.

You've always got the Dynasty Warriors games as well, which I love, but others (understandably) tend to despise -- the games remain exactly the same with each iteration, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
If the idea of smashing through armies of men intrigues you, then yes, pick up a Dynasty Warriors games.
Well, the ultimate mindless violent games for the XBOX/360 are the three Halo games. Nothing complex at all: just shoot anything that moves.

Other than that, Crackdown is pretty great and cheap to boot. You can get it from NewEgg for $13 w/free shipping.
The first FEAR game is also really cheap and has plenty of save points, meaning you could play it for 10-20 minutes and advance within the game.

Edit: I just picked up that you wanted a third person shooter. Lost Planet is a really cool game and easy to be found on the cheap. However, I think that you have to complete each level in order to save your progress within the level.

Zeroillusion, Onechanbara Bikini Samurai Squad for the 360 is a great and ultraviolent hack n' slash, while it's sequel is on the Wii, Onechanbara Bikini Zombie Slayers. Also, if you like...Light Gun Shooters, there is House Of The Dead.

There are 3 compilations for the 360, and they are $30 each The comilations are...Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (is worth buying for Streets Of Rage 1-3, Golden Axe 1-3 alone) includes 40 Genesis titles as well as 8 Sega arcade games. Raiden Fighter Aces includes 4 top down shooters in the Raiden series, including the most recent...Raiden Jet. Namco also has a compilation, but it is not as good as Sega's.

This begins and ends at Left 4 Dead.

Ninja Gaiden II. But you're gonna WORK for your mindless blood and gore.

I love playing against people who consider Left 4 Dead to be a mindless, fast twitch enterprise, and hate playing with them.

Definitely agree with Crackdown. It's one of the most fun and relentlessly addictive games I have ever played

I think John Woo's Stranglehold deserves some love here. It's pretty much Max Payne on steroids. The amount of wanton chaos & destruction that you can cause in this game is fucking unbelievable(which is even more impressive in Bullet-Time). It's very accessible-very easy to pick up and play for hours on end.And it's just as fun and addictive as Crackdown.

He will also have to constantly work against one of,if not the worst cameras ever in a video-game. And against some horrific design choices, and painfully cheap enemies.

He said he wanted to have fun,not go absolutely insane with frustration.

It's mindlessly violent, save points are legion, and it's less than $30. Fits the bill.

Also, there ain't a cheap enemy in that whole game. You get fucked up in that game, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Every enemy in the Ninja Gaiden series is cheap because the camera is fucking horrific.

I agree with you. Finally. Stranglehold is a great game for a pick up and play session. And it can be found for way cheap. I saw it for 10 bucks at Best Buy the other week. Good stuff.

Don't get me wrong. Clearly there many people that were able to get past those problems. And I'd be lying if I said the combat system wasn't incredibly deep and satisfying, when everything works. So I can't say it's a complete unplayable piece-of-shit. But personally,I could not get over it's many flaws, and trust me I tried really, really hard to do so.

And no I dont have to blame myself. Just look at the latter boss fights for example: they are so poorly designed its hilarious. There's no rhyme or reason to them, you don't beat them due to skill,it's mostly because of luck and timing. Or how about the incendiary-shuriken ninjas, or the rocket-launching cyborgs? You're going to tell me those bastards aren't cheap? Come on now!

True as far as the other games are concerned. But in part 2 they're insanely cheap and the camera is horrific.

I'm talking solely about single player, buddy. Co op gives that game different depth and is definitely not mindless. Especially when you have to look out for the group as opposed to yourself.

I think we'd probably agree on most games. Except for brawlers, that is.

Single player is fairly mindless. Also, not nearly as much fun as co-op and versus, but you're right.

No More Heroes for the Wii sounds right up your alley, with the exception of the super quick and easy save points. It's inexpensive and crazy as fuck though.

Yup.

And *extreme, bone-cracking shudder* like Fleed said, House of the Dead: Overkill for the Wii is pretty fun, too. Probably not worth full-price, but buy it when it goes cheap or at least give it a rental.

I'm actually tied, Earth Defense Force actually sounds really fun, but I just now noticed that Ninja Gaiden 2 has gone down in price, so it's either that or Strangehold, with Devil May Cry IV coming in at a close third.

Here's how I see it

Ninja Gaiden 2 - Camera sucks, hard, looks fun, fast and violent.

Strangehold - not the best review, but get to play as Chow Yun Fat

DMC 4 - Fast, Violent, looks fun, but I've read reviews and hate the idea of playing through the same level twice as 2 different characters.

DMC 4 becomes a massive pain in the arse. MASSIVE. Very tedious, and even the combat gets repetitive after a while. There's a fair bit of backtracking and the story is terrible too. I'll usually stick with a video game till the end but I just couldn't with DMC.

The camera didn't bother me too much on Ninja Gaiden II. I haven't played it since it first came out, but you can control it quite well in with the right analogue stick. Left to its own devices though (and usually when your in the middle of fucking someone up) its got zero intuition, I suppose.

Stranglehold is great though! Fits the criteria and its the same price as most platinum games in most stores. Shame you only wanted 360 or Wii because the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the thread title was Serious Sam and Painkiller (PC).

My computers decent, but it's not really set up for gaming, or else I would have.

Alot of people have good things to say about DMC 4, it just doesn't seem interesting.

The reviews are usually mixed on Strangehold, but it looks great, it's just the mixed reviews that are keeping me away.

Holy shit Earth Defence Force 2017 looks great. I've never even heard of it before and it's only 15 quid...reminds me a lot of a N64 game where you ran around shooting bugs that looked like the ones off Starship Troopers.

EDIT: Body Harvest!
DMC 4's all right, and it's hovering around that magical $20 price tag most places. But you want to talk about annoying gameplay mechanics, and I'll show you that game's goddamned dice rooms.
