South Park Season 13

Starts this Wednesday. The last couple seasons have been fairly hit or miss, but South Park is still capable of greatness.

Premiere Episode:

"The Ring"

"Kenny takes his new girlfriend to a Jonas Brothers concert thinking it’s his way into her heart among other body parts. But his dream of taking their relationship to the next level is crushed when the Jonas Brothers give them purity rings."

Who else is looking forward to this?

After all they've done for us, Matt Stone and Trey Parker get the benefit of the doubt, but last season was really disappointing.

Even last season had the greatness of Obama's 11 and Cartman's stint as Edward James Olmos. But yeah, I definitely hope year 13 is a step up.

There were moments I loved (the guinea pig Cloverfield bit was not only inspired, but utterly adorable), but most of the episodes felt uncomplete and lazy in some way.

Not bad enough to give up on them, but it was disappointing nonetheless.

Agreed. Besides the guinea pigs, however, I'll always cherish Butters as a vampire.

The last two seasons have been very dissapointing to me. Sure there has been some good stuff. But the bad outweighs it. Really hope they can get back to hitting home runs every week.

Unless you're under 12 years old or have kids of your own, you don't have any reason to sit around pretending to get pissed off about High School Musical or Twilight or the Jonas Brothers or whatever. Trey Parker is seriously reaching for ideas these days.

I guess the same could be said of the Pokemon episode from a decade ago, though. Is it unreasonable to expect that the show might have grown up a bit since then? I don't know.

Considering that the show is about elementary school kids, I think it makes sense for them to take on things that real kids are obsessed with.
It was definitely an off season, but the Britney episode alone shows they still have it in them to create greatness when inspiration strikes.
I thought Major Boobage, Super Fun Time, Over Looging, and Britney were great episodes, but everything else was just awful.

And Season 11 was pretty bad too, with less than a handful of eps worth watching (and I'm counting imaginationland as one episode for the record).

I really think it's a combination of them just simply running outta ideas combined with the speed at which the seasons are coming out.

Hell...they even admitted that the reason Imagination Land was in Season 11 was because they had simply ran out of ideas...they really wanted it to be a movie.
Yeah, that last few seasons have definitely been somewhat lackluster. I'm still a fan, though, and I will keep watching. We just have to hope for the best.
I still think SOUTH PARK is one of the best things on television right now. I'm glad they are doing a Kenny episode as they usually are the best. IMANAGIONLAND was just spoiled by making it too Butters heavy. Butters is one of the reasons the show has gone downhill lately, there is too much of him. I know he has his fans, but he dosn't really carry the show.

Nothing could spoil Imaginationland, especially not Butters.
Actually I thought season 12 was pretty good. I thought there were a lot of good shows, and even the poorest ones had a good moments.
Evil Mickey Mouse. I like it.
The girls' mouths all dropping open at the same time...nice!
Wasn't thilled with most of it, but I did like the implication that Mickey Mouse rampaging through cities is a semi-regular event. And that he lives in Valhalla.
I was bored to tears with it.
Plus, The Jonas Brothers? I guess they were banking on the movie to do some actual business.
Worth it for the little "ahas" that trailed all of Mickey's dialog. And for the Mr. Slave cameo.
This one must have hit me just right, because I laughed out loud multiple times during this episode, and I usually don't. It was the stuff with the kids that I found funny though, all the stuff with the Jonas brothers and Mickey were just extra.

Butters looking into the camera and saying, "Oh, I thought that was a wedding ring" needed a *rimshot*.
Great episode, good start to the season. Kenny episodes rock.
Had everything I look for in a South Park episode; sex jokes, violence, mild social commentary (yeah, I chuckled at everyone talking about how great Grey's Anatomy was, wanna fight?), and Kenny dies at the end. Not sure how you couldn't enjoy this one.
I think I like South Park better when it's off the air, because then I don't have to defend episodes like this.

For all of Parker and Stone's talk about how their favorite episodes are the character-centric ones, they're sure happy to drag out a single stale joke (Jonas Brothers are lame and Disney sucks!) for thirty goddamn minutes.
Another poor episode with a few bright moments. One more season of this will kill the show for me.
It lost a little momentum near the end, but overall, great fucking episode. Practically a classic compared to most modern South Park.

(Is their foam really white?)
Not that funny, but I sort of dug it.
hmms, I laughed quite a bit during this. And evil Mickey was great. I also loved fat slutty female Cartman.
My girlfriend's little sister is obsessed with the Jonas Bros, so we got a kick out of the episode. The odd contradiction in their sexual/purity appeal has been bothering us for awhile.

Christians are retardarded, Micky Mouse said so.
Retardarded?

Is that like "super duper retarded"?
Well, here I am shoving a whole crow in my mouth. That episode was a lot better than I figured it would be.
Yea this was better than expected. I thought the last 2 seasons have been pretty poor, but I did laugh quite a bit during this.

Spellcheck did that, I have no Idea, but it sounded cool.
I laughed once when Mickey beats up one of the brothers. Other than that, a dumb plot taken to painfully unfunny limits.
I found it really funny, but then I guess I'm not the best critic of South Park, since I found season 12 pretty good, and 11 hilarious.

Moments that got a big laugh out of me:

Kenny's reaction to finding out his girlfriend is a slut.

Marraige and Grey's Anatomy defining you as braindead / lame.

A line of obscenely underaged girls with their mouths open like salmon for the Jonas Brothers.

The music video.

Spraying the audience with white foam.

Cartman's "very special episode"-style warning about women's mouths, and how it played into the final scene.

While never belly-laugh inducing, I also greatly appreciated the barbs thrown at Disney and how they market, as well as how gullible their market is.

Maybe some of you have just grown tired of SOUTH PARK. If so, I genuinely feel sorry for you, because there's just not much comedy of value on TV today, especially not completely fearless and unfiltered somedy.

As for me, I'm buying a new shirt:

I think Stanley's Cup is one of the best episodes they ever did, and I like season 11 quite a bit. It's just that Season 12 was SUCH a drop in quality, and this episode does nothing to convince me that that was a fluke.
Sure it was on the nose with its message but if you didnt crack up laughing at the various reactions of the little girls at that first concert then I dont know whats wrong with you.
A lot of it just seemed too easy. A purity ring being like a wedding ring? Wow, what a new and hilarious thought! And while I know a lot of people still get a kick out of it, I'm a little tired of that adorable/evil gimmick (which was done better in that Nativity episode).

The Jonas Brothers songs were pretty hilarious, though. The misplaced "BABEHHHHH"s killed me.
didn't really get funny till the end

way too much annoying music. a whole video? really??

rampaging mickey was awesome
I dunno, it wasn't hilarious, but I still really liked it. Maybe we're just too used to the formula. Mickey Mouse was both disturbing and brilliant, ha-ha, and the float at the end ("Vengeance is mine!") was genius, ha-ha.

It was certainly a lot better than that Cloverfield two-parter, which was probably the nadir or the series for me.
No way. The worst episode last season was definitely the Indiana Jones/rape episode.
Oh please, it was not.

Wednesday's episode was solid. Not a top-ten, but as mentioned above it had a great mix of satire, Cartman and sex jokes. Very enjoyable.

I thought it was pretty great, and definitely a promising start to the season. Mocking Disney and the JoBros isn't exactly tough, but damn if it wasn't funny.

It boggles my mind that anyone can still defend that episode. That episode is the epitome of what is wrong with South Park lately: easy targets, making the same joke over and over again, and all around lazy writing. It was the worst episode since the first season.
Simply saying Lucas and Spielberg raped Indy is tired and easy. But to actually show it happen while using the backdrop of famous rape moments in film history is funny. Very, very funny.
Really disappointed with this episode. Besides the girls opening their mouths in tandem, it just wasn't funny at all. Mickey as evil was so painfully obvious.
Caught the repeat last night. Not a single laugh. Predictable and lazy. I don't know what you guys see in this series anymore. Disney is a corporate giant that takes advantage of impressionable kids? Whoa, stop the presses. "Rampaging Mickey"? Might as well have brought back "Rampaging Streisand". And who was expecting Kenny to be upset that his girlfriend was a slut?

I know humor is different for every person, but man...
I don't think its about how easy the targets are - South Park has always skewered fish in a barrel (kiddie fiddlers in the Catholic church? Mormons are lame?). That Indy episode was actually pretty awesome. Not THAT funny, but pretty interesting if you look behind the obviousness of what they were doing.
I liked it well enough, but I'm amazed all that specific Mickey bashing got past Disney's notorious lawyers. I'm half expecting some sort of legal fallout that will keep this episode out of reruns for awhile. Disney is usually really strident about protecting their brands and icons.
