25 American Classics: Obama's Picks

Controversy over the actual gift itself aside, I thought the films the White House had the AFI produce by special request (it doesn't match up with their top 25 films list) as a gift for PM Gordon Brown as a gift were interesting, if somewhat predictable. It's a cool list though. I would have picked just one Spielberg, though.

I'm curious to see how much input President Obama and his staff had, since I know the President's kind of a movie buff, and what the reasoning behind some of the choices were.

Edit: Actually, fuck. I read Wikipedia wrong. That is the top 25 films from the last AFI list, the "tenth anniversary edition." Goddamn.

Pretty sure a Spielberg film was given.

I like this comment;
"I wounder if the DVD were region encoded. Will Mr Brown even be able to play them on telly on that side of the pond?"

Would be funny if they don't work in the UK!

ElCapitanAmerica, Don't worry...The next time, Prime Minister Gordon Brown visits, he is not leaving til he at least gets a...Region Free DVD player. Also, he can use the dvds as pretty drink coasters, while he simmers over the lack of thought that went into his gift.

I heard about this on NPR and that somehow this is considered an international incident over England. I had meant to ask Spike about this. I mean I know the gifts aren't on par but the man has far more important shit on his plate.

EdHocken, Um...Doesn't PM Gordon Brown have just as many important things to do, as leader of his country as President Obama does?

That he does and while it's the British press we're talking about. This is such nonsense.

And he will hope that at a General Election the British public do not shun his imploration for another term in office by thinking at the ballot box of the famous line from another of the movies, Casblanca: 'Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.'
Um...

I'm an Obama supporter, but this was a bit of a diplomatic fuckup. I mean, there's no reason to crucify the guy over it, but this sort of stuff is, however stupidly, part of the job.

I know this seems petty, but a few of those films are by British directors working in America, so I'm not sure they count entirely as "American films." I know that's not really important, but between that and the region encoding issue, it seems like a pretty dumb gift to give.
