March Madness '09

Sorry Anderson, I saw your Yahoo Pick 'Em thread, but here's a dedicated thread for the tournament.

I thought today was a good day to start it with all of the "holy shit" games last night, including Syracuse and UConn. Funnily enough though, I think UConn and Pitt getting bounced yesterday bodes horribly for the rest of the field in the tunament because they're going to be rested, and pissed.

Personally, I'm bummed Miami was such a bust this year. People around here had them in the tournament before the season started, but the whole team was nothing but mediocre.

Since my school won't be in it, I can't wait for Selection Sunday because that's when I usually pick a couple of teams to route for. I'm always against UNC and Duke though, but UNC looks to be the favorite this year.

Can't believe FSU not only will be going to the big tourney, but that they actually got a bye in the first round of the ACC Tournament. And with GT beating Clemson, FSU actually might have a shot to make it to the semi's if they can beat the Yellow Jackets today. And UNC barely got by VT. Dammit.

I can't believe FSU is allowed to exist as an institution, but I'm a Miami guy so I might be a bit biased.

Your former basketball coach is there now...don't you feel a little happiness for him?
UNC just won a close one.

Here's hoping Michigan can make some headway in the Big 10 tourney.

They can beat Illinois tonight, especially if Sims plays like he did against Iowa. MSU is still the class of the conference, but with one more win, I think Michigan gets a 10 seed this weekend and maybe a winnable first round game against a weak 7.
Don't buy into Pitt's hype.

They always choke during the games that actually matter. Upset in the Sweet 16.

Count on it.

Go 'Eers!

Not a problem, as long as we can try and get something to work in tandem.

If anyone still wants in on the Tourney Pick 'Em, PM me email addresses so I can forward invites.

Yeah, people I work with tell me the same thing. But then I remind them that I'm their boss.

Besides, Eric, at least you guys beat us at Football this year. Oh wait...

I had to buddy.

At least we play with scholastically eligible players...

PM sent.

That Syracuse game last night was possibly the most ridiculous sporting event I've watched in ten years. I was happy that SU won, but considering how hard their starters are worked, more down time might not be a bad thing.

Yeah, it's going to be fun to watch the Orangemen get stomped tonight.

But, how about that Baylor team?

'Cuse is going to upset Louisville. You heard it here first.

Check back later for my subsequent retraction and jest at my expense.
At this point it seems like all the top teams are going to lose in their conference tourneys. I just can't imagine Syracuse beating Louisville, though we'll see.

I don't know if it's Duke's or Maryland's band, but they're playing the Zelda theme and it made me laugh.

Just don't ask about them about their Pell Grants.

Man, FSU in the ACC tourney finals? Inconceivable! My wife's cousin, a UNC fan, just called and offered me her tix to the game on Sunday. Got plans already, but still debating taking them. Duke will be tough, though. I'm just happy they made it this far.
Well, nice to see the Cards didn't choke.
A hat-tip to you, Anderson.

Glad I was working, or otherwise I would have been pretty upset. Looks like SU finally ran out of gas.

But it's okay. I'd bet that they're going to be a 4 (long shot, though) or a 5 seed, and that wouldn't have changed even if they had won tonight. Good for Johnny Flynn - how he was able to play 110 minutes in two nights and not keel over is beyond me...

And in 15 years, when a UM fan brings this up to me, I'll say, "That was 15 years ago." In which time I'm sure UM will be in trouble again, and probably so will FSU at some point. Nothing I say will make you stop liking UM, and nothing you say will make me stop liking FSU. So let's leave it at that and save it for the NCAA 2009 Football season thread.

As for b-ball, I figured they wouldn't get past Duke. With UNC out of the tourney title picture, I'm sure Duke was anxious to seal up that title as a "nyeah" to UNC. And in a strange irony, FSU is a 5 seed and plays Wisconsin in their first game, the same school they played in football in their bowl game last year.
Whoa. Syracuse a 3 seed in Miami? I'll take it. Looks like the road to the Sweet 16 isn't as difficult as feared...
Memphis should have been number 1. Arizona doesn't belong.
Michigan returns!!! I almost shit myself when I saw Wisconsin as a 12 seed. Anyone who has watched Big Ten basketball this season knows they are WAY better than that.
Big 10 Basketball sucks. No elite players=no chance in the tourney. Sweet 16 is the best any of them can do and I doubt any will get there.
Someone might want to check and make sure that John Feinstein didn't hijack Anya's account.

I love this logic, and how wrong it is.

Don't like UNC's chances.
Why not? When Lawson comes back, they're the team to beat. Even with their shitty depth.

Wisconsin only made the tourney because they've always made the tourney. They completely sucked on the road this year. They were lucky to even get in. Losing close games all the time isn't something to be proud of.

It was Maryland. Heard them doing it on Friday, too. They also played the old TMNT cartoon theme song.

Agreed. Their road to Detroit is easier than Uconn's or Pitt's. The next toughest team in the South region is probably Gonzaga.
My dad's a huge LSU fan and since they are playing in greensboro, my dad's trying to get us tickets to the game Thursday.
Lawson's got an injured toe; meaning that no matter when he comes back, he won't be 100%. Also, if it comes down to UNC and Gonzaga, don't sleep on the 'dogs. Daye and Pargo can fill it up and Heytvelt plays with a chip on his shoulder. Don't think that he'll back down or be intimidated when Hansbrough goes off on his "Ritalin-seeking ADHD poster child" act.

As far as the Big Ten being shitty, Minnesota beat that soft Louisville team early this season and MSU wallopped Kansas. Physical play inside the paint determines a lot of games in the tournament and most of the Big Ten teams know how to play that way.

Lawson's toe will be better than it was against Duke last week, and he was a couple of rebounds and an assist away from a triple-double. Williams exaggerated the extent of his injury during the ACC tournament so he could sit Lawson and not make it look like he didn't care about winning the conference tourney.

If a 13 point win is a "walloping," what term would you use for UNC's beating MSU by 36 points? The Big 10 is shitty. Of their 7 teams in the tournament, they'll be lucky if two make it to the Sweet 16, and none will make the Elite 8.
The game wasn't as close as 13 points and yeah, UNC stole State's lunch money; I'm not debating that. Hell, I've got UNC in the Final Four on one of my brackets. What I'm saying is that (regional bias aside...) the Big Ten is not as bad as everyone is saying. The Pac 10 and SEC are much worse this season in terms of overall quality.

Now, chest beating over, do you think that this year's 7-10 games skew toward the lower seeds? All four 10's can take their opening games.
I was watching the local news at lunch only to discover that my alma mater Cal State Northridge made it into March Madness. How the fuck did that happen?

You're right. Williams doesn't want a repeat of last year when it to comes to Lawson. The ACC tourney was meaningless to them.

The Big Ten was so bad it allowed Northwestern to sniff the NCAA Tourney. Northwester road victories-Michigan St, Purdue, and Indiana. Hoosiers were bad but NW hadn't won there since the mid 60's.

Obama filled out a bracket on ESPN today. The guy knows his shit.
I know. Most of his bracket is the similar to mine; and he truly knows how good the Heels are, seeing how he practiced with them earlier in the season.
He didn't pick a 12/5 upset, I see.
I noticed that Obama did not choose my alma mater. He just lost my vote*.

*Not really
I'm going to see LSU vs Butner and UNC vs Radford tomorrow. First time I've ever been to an NCAA tourney game.

should be fun. Go LSU! Go UNC!

Coach K blasts Obama
Quote:
"Somebody said that we're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils' first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.
What a friggin baby. There are a hundred better ways to answer that question. Now he just gave people more reason to hate Duke.
It's been a fun time in the production trucks here in Greensboro. We lost power to our main truck at about 11:50am--30 minutes before our game was to tip. We got power back about 5 minutes later, but still not the most encouraging work situation.
I think I suffered a mild heart attack during the last 5 minutes of the Michigan game, but am still alive.

It's scary that Nova almost covered the spread, but how difficult is that to do IN FRONT OF A HOME CROWD.
