New guide to on demand video. First up: AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS WITH MICHAEL PALIN

Well if he would have stayed home maybe his wife wouldn't have gotten so uppity.
I remember watching this about 20 years ago.

I suggest you see threads on google video

Excellent. I've always wanted to see that and have nightmares.

The Palin travelogues are great. I'd also recommend the two Ewan MacGregor shows, Long Way Round and Long Way Down, as well.
Such a great idea for a column. Have this and a few other of Palin's on my gigantic queue, but wasn't sure of how great they were. Glad to read this.

Sarah Palin has ruined the surname Palin for me. Jesus christ.

BLOOD RED EARTH, JT Petty's prequel to the very interesting THE BURROWERS

http://chud.com/articles/articles/18...RTH/Page1.html

I won't usually do two a day, but this showed up in my inbox and I wanted to highlight it over the weekend.

Wow, I remember watching this on the BBC 20 years ago. I wanted the rest of the Month Python crew to join him!

Last year the BBC showed a 20th anniversary program, where he returns to some of the places he visited and catches up with some of the people he met.

Google video is just about the only place I can find Gizmo!, your one-stop shop for clips of old-timey inventions.

Yeah, this thread is for discussion of the column, not a catchall for video on the web.
Nothing too interesting to say right now, but I just wanted to reiterate what Alex said. I think this is a fantastic idea for a column. I will be looking forward to it.
I was actually quite late to the party on this. I ony watched it 2 years ago when i was laid up with chicken pox., fantastic show and very informative.

The BBC did a follow up to this over Christmas last year. Palin went looking for the crew of the Dow that he sailed with. I won't spoil how that turned out but it was a very nice bookend to the series.
Great column idea! I watched the Palin specials with my folks while growing up, and we loved the heck out of them. I think they inspired my parents to do more world traveling as my father neared retirement.

Keep it up!

I've been looking forward to THE BURROWERS for a while now, thanks for the video. Kinda dissapointed it's not getting a theatrical release, seeing as I've heard nothing but positive things about it.
That was really fucking interesting. I could definitely go for a TREMORS type of horror movie that was straight-up and not jokey.

Pelham was on Hulu a while back and then got pulled. Great to see they put it back up. I don't have anything else to say other than "yes, see it right now."
There is so much awesome content available on the Web, from movies to TV shows to god knows what. You touched short-form content a little with the Burrowers post. Will you be going deeper into that territory in the time to come? I'm a huge fan of the old Disney animated shorts, so stuff like that and new experimental works I think should be represented as well. Awesome new feature!
I saw the film for the first time a few months back with the Chud Film of the month club. Terrific.

And that poster is astounding.
The burrowers was a really different horror film. I dug it. Slow build up, interesting reveal and an unexpected ending to say the least. Look forward to more JT petty films.
I watched this right one week ago, actually. Pelham's a good film, for performances more than anything, I'd say. And they just don't end movies like that any more -- plot's over, last bad guy's found, cut to credits. Even better, cut to credits on Matthau's hang-dog "gotcha" face.
Damn good catch on Pelham. I'm going to throw this at everyone I can so that they'll finally watch it.
I wish Hulu worked down here in Oz.
"Gesundheit!"

Love the final shot of that movie. Even though I haven´t seen it for more than a decade this shot still stayed with me. Good column!
It's great you guys can watch Pelham in all its glory before Travolta takes a shit on it.

Agreed. Still, I like the idea of Devin being able to do brief write-ups of such a vast library of films, from classics to new stuff.

FATTY DRIVES THE BUS

http://chud.com/articles/articles/18...BUS/Page1.html

Edit: And yes, I realize the hilarity of following up PELHAM with FATTY.
I missed Pelham the first time it went up, so it's great to get a second shot. It would have been nice to see it without commercial breaks, but at least they're short. And I can't complain too much since it's uncut, and widescreen. The picture is really dark in places, which makes the subway scenes a bit muddy at times. The movie is so good that it survives that. What a freakin' cast.

Tony Scott is absolutely the wrong guy to do this material. But since I think he's the wrong guy to be drawing oxygen, maybe I'm not the best judge.

Casting Shaw (not to mention Matthau) was a masterstroke. “Blue” exudes the kind of restrained menace and ruthlessness you'd expect from a professional soldier. No unnecessary dialogue, wild look-at-me! hand gestures, demented cackling or idiot grins. From start to finish he's wearing his business mask. The less of the real him people see the safer everyone will be. He'd rather not pull the trigger, but if he has to he will without a trace of pity (or silly theatrics).

Oh for sure.
I liked but didn't love The Burrowers. I think a lot of people have The Searchers colored lenses on when they watch it, seeing so many scenes and gimmicks pulled directly from that earlier masterpiece. I found it a bit grating, really, but imagine that it would play easier on a second viewing.

The movie itself was good, but I thought even at 100 minutes there was stuff that could be trimmed or changed to make it a tighter movie. The scene where Callahan shows up after they leave the cavalry comes to mind, as what it brings to the movie could have been streamlined into when the four locals set out. I imagine they expected people to be like "what about Callahan?" and then be like "oh, there he is!" but it feels amateurish in execution to say the least.

The last 20 minutes or so are fucking awesome, though.

Awesome that you spotlighted this, Alex. Just for the sake of plugging my best friend's podcast some more (he just did a two part best of '08 series with me), he recently interviewed the writer/director of Fatty Drives the Bus Mick Napier. One of his better podcasts in my estimation, worth a listen:

That's great! I was wondering what the director had got himself up to - as far as IMDB knows it's the only film he's made. Thanks for the link, going to give it a listen right now.

OK, now if Raimi wanted to do another Spider-Man flick, THIS is the way to go! Hell, he should hand out DVDs of this the next time someone asks him what's going on with SM4.
How cool is this?!?

Even with the painful intro song, this thing is awesome!

Must... watch... more!
You're crazy, I love the 70's and 80's tokusatsu theme songs, this being one of my favorites.
Great, now whenever Im watching one of the Spidey flicks, those corny sound effects will play in my head...jeebus, the web slinging one is just priceless.
That was great.
-Who are you?!

I keep thinking of "Let's Fighting Love" from South Park when I hear this music...

awesome!

I'm proud to bring you Eddie Loves You, the best killer Elmo doll movie ever made!

Eddie Loves You is great, I downloaded way back when you first mentioned it Alex. Great shit.

Somebody get Karl Holt a feature to direct, STAT.
Dude, I wish. You watch any of his other shorts? Some are a lot more serious but all show what a great director he is. He's apparently got a few more on the way this year, I'll definitely keep you folks in the loop for what's going on with them.

Great find. I watched this a ridiculous number of times when it first started showing on HBO. Agreed, the fact that Rickles and Newhart are friends somehow makes the world a better place.
That one's already been sitting in my Hulu queue for a few days. I was disappointed that Three Amigos had disappeared, so finding this was a nice consolation prize.
Awesome. I still haven't seen this.

Slasher was fantastic.
Slasher is a much better documentary.

But I just caught this myself last week (it's on Netflix, as well) and loved it- it's definitely a great introduction for people to Rickles, and for fans it's nice to see that the old bastard's still got it.
