Hulu double standard. There was no problem with me seeing tits & bush during the religious fervor at John The Baptist, but it seems like some hebrew dick was blurred out.
It's on the criterion collection dvd (only way I've seen the film besides netflix) as well. It's not just hulu.
thanks for the knowledge now I'm just wondering why.
This kind of blew me away just now. If I hadn't already read the gospels and studied much of the bible, and thus known that this depiction doesn't quite line up with any church's, I could easily see this movie pushing me towards Christianity.

I've always been a huge fan of Dafoe, but surely he has never or will never top this. He's brilliant.

The cinematography is pretty breathtaking. Scorsese's most visually impressive film. And the score really surprised me. Very, very good.

Here's a question that isn't for this thread, but which I'd love to know the answer to:

Do you need to belong to a church denomination to be Christian, in your opinion?

Feel free to PM me if you'd like to share your answer.

Thanks for this last one Russ. Wonderful little doc, and I'll definitely be presenting in both my Doc class, and my sound class.

This feature rocks, keep it up.
I'll echo that sentiment. A sad tale.

Couldn't get through BUBBLE. Sort of enjoyed CHE. Don't remember anything about FULL FRONTAL.

Love GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE. It's a really fucking good movie.
I remember about 5 minutes of FULL FRONTAL, and don't have much urge to go back to it. CHE I still haven't had the opportunity to catch. Damn Georgia. (I don't have cable, so On Demand is out.)
This is also showing on either HDNET or HDMOVIES on, I think, May 20.
I dunno... 10 bucks for 77 minutes of Sasha Grey, and there isn't even any anal?
Just finished The Girlfriend Experience.

Very interesting. I remember Soderbergh saying when Full Frontal was being made that it would be a somewhat "spiritual sequel" to Sex, Lies, and Videotape in terms of getting back to his roots with smaller budget filmmaking. Obviously, having stars like Julia Roberts and David Duchovney didn't do that film any favors(Though, I did like Mulder and Nicky Katt).

TGE is definitely more in tune with the sensibility that Sex, Lies...had. In terms of dissecting relationships and if sex muddles that perfect relationship(well, yeah, it does.).

Sasha Grey's almost blank approach really did the film a lot of favors. That's who she is before she meets her clients, and from there she acclimates to their needs and wants in a more "girlfriend" manner, and she excels at it. It was almost revelatory when she breaks down and cries after getting stood up by one of her clients. Clearly, her identity and her profession are not as refined as she thinks.

Glenn Kenny...ugh. Total sleezebag! I'm curious if his review of Chelsea was written by Levin or Koppleman, or if he did it himself. If the former, I wonder if he use to work for Hustler?

Russ, are you going to be writing a review of this?
I think Devin wrote a good review of this, but my memory is shit.
A chunk of it is quoted and linked in Russ' article.

Yes, HDNet Movies on May 20.

Wrote it himself.

Yep.

Okay. Anyone know if it's a glitch, or are they working out a way to start charging me more for that stuff?

Devin is getting blurbed in the ads for the Girlfriend Experience on HDMovies.

It is pretty serious, and the actors get reeaal emotional during some of the more dramatic scenes. Can't say they're actually good actors, but they put their all into it. Made me chuckle.

Scifi Channel ran an all day marathon on Memorial day. I recently revisited the entire 3 seasons with the daughter, so I didin't feel obligated to to stay inside.

Walter Koenig wrote an ep. He named Enik as an (obscure) homage to Roddenberry.

First appearance of Enik, who has a major role in the movie.

I just saw this episode a few days ago during the marathon on the SciFi Channel. The Enik/Sleestak relationship was pretty deep stuff for a Saturday morning kids show. I came to the show for the dinosaurs (I was a huge dino buff) but even as a kid I appreciated the science fiction elements, and I recall being disturbed by the implications of Enik's revelation.

A free Luc Besson doc? Can you pass up HOME? http://chud.com/articles/articles/19...OME/Page1.html
post #234 of 434
I've only watched 15 minutes so far, but wow, the photography is fucking gorgeous.

Might have to pick this up on DVD.
There just has to be an interesting story about why Sweaty Dad was replaced by the uncle on the final year of Land of the Lost.
Just finished Home. A few idiots might throw a shit-fit, but this needs to be shown in schools.

Good thing it ended on a positive note. I was almost ready to implode, despite already knowing most of this stuff.

I cannot stress how beautifully shot the film is.

Jesus Christ that gave me a headache. But yeah, it does look relatively interesting.

Speaking of it being a Golden Age of indie sci-fi... can anyone name all those good indie sci-fi's I ought to have seen (or at least own)?
Correctly posted here.

There's some fantastic imagery in there. Bekmambetov on acid. If the advent of cheap digital effects and editing software mixed with a little imagination can produce things like this and Alive in Joburg then i'm all for it.

Cheers for that, Devin.
The synopsis kind of makes it sound like an Olivier Gruner joint. However the preview has me intrigued.
Look like one of those films that's better in trailer form. Hope I'm wrong.
Maybe it was the soundtrack on the trailer, but it had a strong Chris CUnningham vibe to it. And I don't know what exactly "shoestring budget" means, but if it's anywhere around the 10-12 mil range, what the hell are the studios spending their money on, besides names and advertising (and maybe I'm just underestimating how much of a studio's budget is reserved for those things)? Either way, the effects and glossy quality of the trailer looked pretty great. I'm definitely curious as to how the whole thing turns out.

Start with Last Night, Primer, and Robot Stories.

God damn it. Two stories in a row that contain media I can't view.
Is Hulu US-only? That's bullshit. You can't use a proxy or something?
A sad, but true and hilarious story:

Back when I was about five, I had a Captain America VHS that had the trailer to Troll 2 on it. I was terrified of the damn thing. I barely ever watched Captain America (a shit film, but I was five) because of it, and when I did, my mom would have to fast forward to the beginning of the movie so I wouldn't see the previews. I went through my entire childhood thinking Troll 2 was the scariest movie I'd never see. Even in my early middle school years, I thought the film was probably among the scariest ever made.

Sometime during high school, around the time Spider-Man came out, I got into superhero movie watching mode and popped the VHS in. For the first time since I was five, I watched the Troll 2 trailer. I then Googled the film to find out that it was, in fact, in the IMDB bottom 100.

Troll 2 raped my childhood.
Haha, I haven't seen Troll 2 in a couple years. It really is horrible, but strangely captivating. The chick who plays the sister gives one of the worst performances I've ever had the displeasure of watching.

EDIT - Oh, and "Yes it is! Elliot is a good-for-nothing!"

It is US only, and it IS bullshit - to a certain extent.

If MGM makes TROLL 2 freely available in Europe via Hulu, they're stepping on the toes of any number of companies who might have already licensed the film from its Italian producers and might not want it made freely available. The obvious solution is to make things available in different areas on a title by title basis - but then selling ads becomes more complicated, because now maybe you're advertising Dial Soap to people who can't buy it.

Ironically, the name Hulu is taken from Mandarin, a language officially spoken only in countries where you cannot watch Hulu.

She's actually a working actress now! In the doc she talks about how she keeps it off her resume so she can get work.
