Just finished The Girlfriend Experience.
Very interesting. I remember Soderbergh saying when Full Frontal was being made that it would be a somewhat "spiritual sequel" to Sex, Lies, and Videotape in terms of getting back to his roots with smaller budget filmmaking. Obviously, having stars like Julia Roberts and David Duchovney didn't do that film any favors(Though, I did like Mulder and Nicky Katt).
TGE is definitely more in tune with the sensibility that Sex, Lies...had. In terms of dissecting relationships and if sex muddles that perfect relationship(well, yeah, it does.).
Sasha Grey's almost blank approach really did the film a lot of favors. That's who she is before she meets her clients, and from there she acclimates to their needs and wants in a more "girlfriend" manner, and she excels at it. It was almost revelatory when she breaks down and cries after getting stood up by one of her clients. Clearly, her identity and her profession are not as refined as she thinks.
Glenn Kenny...ugh. Total sleezebag! I'm curious if his review of Chelsea was written by Levin or Koppleman, or if he did it himself. If the former, I wonder if he use to work for Hustler?
Russ, are you going to be writing a review of this?
