The title, and even the way the films appears on IMDB is extremely misleading, because while there's a lot of sex in this film, it really isn't what the film's about. It's another Julio Medem film, like Tierra (which I posted about earlier) and Los amantes del circulo polar, both of which are very good films. The latter of the two feels very much like a Kieslowski film in terms of the circular story arc, and the way the characters act towards each other. Lucia y el sexo is of the same like, and the non-linear/chapter format makes the comparison even more valid.
Overall, the film has a lot under the surface, and a lot to say about relationships. It also makes very big assumptions about the writing process, most of which make sense to me. It would seem that if you were writing a novel, that the characters would have to be real to you in order to continue writing them in a way that's believable to you. The main male protagonist, Lorenzo (Tristán Ulloa), plays a novelist that starts to almost confuse fantasy and reality, which adds to the fairy-tale like fashion that some of this film takes on.
Performances are all stellar. A lot of well known Spanish actors, from Paz Vega as Lucia, to Najwa Nimri (los Amantes del circulo polar, Abre los Ojos) and Elena Anaya (Sin noticias de dios, Habla con ella), to the aforementioned Ulloa and also Javier Cámara (Habla con ella, la Mala educacion), everyone is cast just about perfectly.
A fine film, just don't expect a Bigas Luna film (Huevos de Oro or Las edades de Lula come to mind), as there is a lot more to it then sex, and a hell of a lot more under the surface than anything Luna has ever done.
