A quote for the "common man"...

Gleaned this off CNN.com this morning.

I don't usually back Republicans as a rule, but this guy has chutzpah.

Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa didn't appear to be joking, however, when he spoke with Cedar Rapids, Iowa, radio station WMT.

"I would suggest the first thing that would make me feel a little better toward them [AIG executives] is if they follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say, 'I am sorry,' and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide," he said.

"And in the case of the Japanese, they usually commit suicide."

Nice grandstanding now. These are the people that opposed executive compensation caps in the TARP bill. This is all phony outrage designed to stick Obama with these AIG @$$#0les. I hope this is a real learning experience for Obama about how the GOP in congress operate.

GOP senators McConnell and Shelby now:

Quote:
MCCONNELL: “Well, it is an outrageous situation. I wrote Secretary Paulson back in October complaining about the way AIG had been doing its business. […] This is an outrage.” [ABC News, 3/15/09]

SHELBY: “We ought to explore everything that we can through the government to make sure that this money is not wasted. […] A lot of these people should be fired, not awarded bonuses. This is horrible. It’s outrageous.” [AP, 3/16/09]
McConnell and Shelby then:

Quote:
MCCONNELL: “I really don’t want the government to take over these businesses and start telling them everything about what they can do. […] We have to resist the temptation to basically dictate to these businesses how to run every aspect of their operation.” [ABC News, 2/4/09]

SHELBY: “It should be up to the board of directors of a private corporation to set the compensation of an executive; it shouldn’t be Congress’s role.” [Washington Post, 9/23/08]
source.

BTW, while I think the GOP has been the most egregious coddlers of the financial services industry, i think all of Washington is terrified of the big multinational corporations, including those in the financial services industry.

I'm hoping Obama has the stomach and the will to take on the corporate robber barons on behalf of the people, but it's not going to happen without overwhelming public support.
