Nathan Rabin's "Nashville or Bust series - Page 2

This is probably my favorite entry in this series thus far. I love how Rabin drew the connections between Haggard and the Coup, as it made for some compelling reading about two artists I really wasn't all that familiar with. It also made me want to change that, and rush out and buy a bunch of CDs from both. In fact, this entire series has really got me wishing I could afford to pick up all of the albums he's covered thus far (especially the Gram Parsons). It's great stuff, and I can't wait for next week's installment.

I'm going to go not very far out onto a sturdy limb and assume your local library is WELL stocked in most of the artists Rabin has mentioned so far.

It's possible, but I've found that the DVD selection is much better than the CD selection at the local library. I have to go there tomorrow to drop some stuff off, though, so I'll have to take a look.

Actually, the thematic links between hip-hop and country were actually something that I was thinking about earlier this year. I'm hardly an expert in either genre, so I didn't get very far, but it is pretty telling that once you drop any prejudices you may have about either genre, the similarities become almost glaringly obvious.

Also, I can't wait for Rabin to cover some of the not-so-hip for the target audience pop country stuff later on down the line. Will he look at that stuff any differently after having his ear tuned by earlier country artists? Will his readers? Will I?

Just in case the interested parties miss my status update on Facebook, this week's entry focuses on the divine Ms. Dolly Parton.

This woman blew my pants and my mind when I was a kid. Nice to see her getting some much-deserved appreciation.

Ya know, I can't believe the shameless punsters on this board let a Dolly Parton/bust joke lie around unmade for 2-3 weeks.

If anyone's interested, Rabin has a memoir coming out, and he'll be making the bookstore rounds. Found out he's coming to a bookstore around the corner from my apartment to promote it in July (I was there listening to Greg Kot from Chicago Tribune/Sound Opinions hype his new book on the changing nature of the music business, which I didn't buy, but will definitely be reading). Wonder how many of the questions he gets will be about his AV Club stuff instead of the book...

If they said a FUCKING THING about her I would KILL THEM.

EDIT: RE: Parton

And yeah, I'm gonna be checking out Rabin's memoir. It sounds too interesting to pass up.

Definitely.

On topic, I've always "hated" country without a thought or a listen beyond the CMT set, but lately I've gotten the desire to find out the good stuff. In what is probably a common story here, I got this desire from Neko Case. Not just that she's a combination of country and awesome, but because of her covers, which made me realize there have been some fine writers in the genre. And the songs are super super sad, which I love.

Dismissing an entire genre has been discussed on this board ad nauseum, but I recall Noel Murray (in his Popless series) mentioning how behind most one-hit wonders there's a damn interesting career, which is sort of along the same lines. In my world, at least.

I guess what I'm getting at is CMT is to country as America's Top 40 is to rock music (or pop, depending on how you view it) - yeah, that's the shiny wrapper but the good stuff is below the surface.

This week, Rabin looks at Toby Keith. He's WAY nicer and more understanding than I would be in this instance, but it's still a pretty great read. His deconstruction of Keith's persona is quite interesting, though it doesn't make me like the guy's awful music any more than I did before.

Fuck Toby Keith - coming up, Waylon Jennings and Buck fuckin' Owens.
