DJ Shadow

If there's a case to be made for DJ's as serious artists, Shadow has made it and defined it, a friend of mine introduced me to Shadow a couple of years ago and I've been hooked ever since, his ability to craft great music from the most obscure old school music is amazing, Shadow is very cinematic in his approach, as good as 'Endtroducing' is, I think 'Private Press' is better, more structured, and as much as The Outsider was derided by some fans I think there's some really good stuff on that album, I don't really care for the rap songs but 'Seein' Things' by David Banner is a solid track.

I read somewhere that Shadow created the song 'Broken Levee Blues' out of different guitar parts from different songs, if that's true, that's quite amazing that it sounds very seamless.

Any fans of the man's talents?

The Private Press was one of the pivotal albums of my late teens. I'd liked Entroducing, but the sheer structure and beauty and seamlessness of some of the songs on Private Press blew me away and it really got me interested in musical structuring which in turn got me into bands like Mogwai which in turn made me a pretty big Post Rock fan.

"Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" is simply amazing. Much bigger fan of Entroducing... than The Private Press. Probably because I heard that first, though. Not to short-shift the brilliance of Private Press or anything.

Shadow is great, it's worth looking into UNKLE's Psyence Fiction which he produced. It did get slated on release but i think it's cool, there's some epic tracks on there.

Also if your looking for something similar then there's a chap called DJ Signify whose album is called "Sleep no more". It's darker in tone to shadow's stuff and he has guest MC's Sage Francis and Buck 65 on some of the tracks. That's excellent.

Shadow has also done some great work with the Quannum crew, he produced 'Cliffhanger' off Blackalicious's Nia, I really need to listen to 'The Hard Sell' with Cut Chemist, it's a shame 'Brainfreeze' is damn near impossible to find.

I regret not seeing DJ Shadow live when I had the chance, but, oh well. I think DJ Shadow is the closest thing the US has to an act like Massive Attack.

Love, love, love. One of my favorite artists ever. I've been lucky enough to see him perform on more than one occasion, and I think I have pretty much everything he's released in some form or another.

Does anyone need a copy of Preemptive Strike with the (rare) 2nd disc of Camel Bobsled Race? I have two of those.

I'm really tired now, but I'll revisit the thread later.

Does anyone know where the long dialogue sample in 'Stem/Long Stem' comes from?

I could swear it sounds like Elliott Gould but I'm really not sure.

It's from a comedy recording by Murray Roman, which turns out to be a track called "Freedom" from his album Busted.
